Strength:

None that I care to talk about!

Weakness:

Shoddy quality! Too expensive! Poor customer service!

A friend referred me to this site and boy am I glad to see you guys! I thought I was the only one but I see a number of you, like me, have been had by Sony with regards to this particular brand of DVD player. I bought the S560D about 2 years ago. I started gettig the C:13 message occasionally about 1 year into use of the DVD but since last week or so I am also getting the "No Disc" message. This is a total piece of crap! The tech told me it would cost upwards of $150 to repairit but I might as well buy a new one (another brandname of course!). Anyway, I also emailed Sony and talked to them - but as expected they said it was out of the warranty period. I filed a formal complaint and requested a complaint ID number. I suggest all of you should do the same. Here''s the number to call and file your complaint: 18002227669. Always ask to talk to the supervisor because the lower level customer service rep may not always be too helpful. Good luck, guys! If all of us make an issue out of this by filing a formal complaint, maybe they would be forced to recall this crappy product. Also, does anyone know how to campaign for a product recall? Post it on this site if you do.

Good picture quality till it works

I been having the same issue as all of seem to have. Player was till these "NO DISC" errors start showing up. Now it won''t play anything and My warrenty just expired about 2 months ago. I called sony they told me they will only cover units within one year of purchase. Basically they told me i''m out of luck cuz my warrenty expired and there are no wide issues with this model. If someone is planning on heading some sort of plan to make sony aware of that this Model does have a problem and its shared by so many under the same circumstances. Feel free to include me in it. I''m planning on writting a letter to sony telling them about the issue.

Strength:

Hmmm... Funny. Right now I can''t think of any.

Weakness:

Possible secret SNAFU chip technology.

Add my voice to the many here. Occasional "no disc" message, has become consistant "no disc" message alternating with "c 13" error message. End result? Unable to play DVDs on this player at this time. Purchased 12 months ago. Has Sony installed a "SNAFU" chip in this player, activating 1 day after term of warrenty, in the misguided hope that its purchaser will run out to buy another Sony player? No more Sony for me.

Strength:

Lots of features.

Weakness:

You can''t use the features if it stops working a couple months after the warrenty expires.

I bought this dvd player and it was awesome for about one year. Then just like so many other reviewers, my player started giving me lots of C:13 errors a month or two after the warranty expired. I too tried all kinds of solutions but the problem kept getting worse. Finally it has now stopped recognizing any disks so it is now useless. I went back to the place where I bought this player and they informed me that they had been having an unusual amount of returns and repairs on this particular model. They told me I should have bought their extended warrenty. I told them that I didn''t expect Sony to make such a defective product. I have yet to call Sony. That is my next step, but judging from the responses that other people have posted here I am not to optimistic. My advise to those thinking about getting this model is to avoid it. There are probably some that do not have problems, but there are too many complaints here which make me think that the problem is bigger.

Strength:

Compact, digital audio out, easy interface.

Weakness:

Can''t play DVDs after 6 months. Can''t play CDRs ever.

What a dissapointment. I bought this because I had always believe Sony was the leader in DVD technology... Wrong! This thing started giving me the C13 error after about 6 months. Few and far between at first but now it will play one of twenty or so DVDs. Even brand new ones will not play. My suggestion: Don''t buy a Sony DVD

UPDATE: It has been 2 weeks since I got the “NO DISC” error. I have done a lot of research only to find myself still with the same problem. Cleaning the laser did not help, alignment did not help. And the problem is very consistent. I have tried 65 DVDs by now (a little obsessive, I know) and no changes. I called SONY support and after speaking to 8 different people the best result I have gotten so far is that SONY is agreeing to pay 50% of the repair cost (which they estimated right away to be $188.94) or give me $100 towards buying a different model from them. Both offers are ridiculous as far as I am concerned, but SONY refuses to acknowledge the problem. They are simply saying that there is nothing wrong with the model and that my case is RARE! I called Authorized Service Centers (AVR in Philadelphia and a couple of other ones). AVR is a SONY authorized service center, so they are saying the same thing – problem does not exist. Yet when I called a couple of centers that are not on the list of authorized SONY service centers, I seem to get the same answer, “Yeah, we get a lot of them and they all have exact same problem.” This situation is short of being an X-file. To those who are not having problems and swear by this model as the best DVD player they have ever had: I was right there with you a month ago. I hope this never happens to you. To those with the problem: CALL SONY and make them aware. They insist that there is no issue. Panasonic and JVC are in a class action suit over a similar issue. I understand that defects are unavoidable. But when a giant company refuses to investigate the problem or acknowledge that there is a problem, it is frustrating. I am intending to file with Better Business Bureau and call trade magazines for help. I spent too much money for this DVD player to just drop it. And yes, I am going out and buying a different product. I am afraid my love affair with SONY has ended.

Strength:

- Sleek Design - Great Picture - Great Audio quality - Plays CD-RW''''''''''''''''s

Weakness:

- Bulky Remote (Not that bad though) - Doesn''''''''''''''''t play CD-R''''''''''''''''s (Except Prime Peripherals, they work great. Sadly they have been discontinued) - Doesn''''''''''''''''t play MP3s

Sony has again shown why it is a leader in home audio and viedo. The D560 was my first DVD player and still my main unit. The design is sleek, very thin and not cluttered. The remote is a bit on the obece side but it is much better than some other DVD remotes I''''''''''''''''ve seen. Playback is great! DVD loads very quick and doesn''''''''''''''''t have any problems during playback, this after over a year. Oh, I forgot the BestBuy salesman said, "You''''''''''''''''ll need to have it in for cleanings twice a year otherwise the picture will skip, like a cd." Sure, right on that. Anyway the picture has been great with no skipping or pixelation. CD audio quality is also great but the unit doesn’t play MP3s. The unit does specify that it won’t play CD-R''''''''''''''''s and I found this to be true except for one brand. CD-RWs are claimed to work in the unit but I have never tested that feature. Overall, a great unit with great picture and sound quality for both DVD and CDs.

Strength:

Great picture and sound Decent price (in year 2000 terms!) Nice design

Weakness:

No mp3, no CD-Rs, no Microvision-off option, freeze and c:13 from time to time

Have had the player for 15 months. Did have the freeze, no disk, and C:13 problems, but they happened rather rarely. Quality of the picture and sound is great, design is elegant, I would be completetly satisfied (even though it does not play MP3 and very picky with CD-Rs), but... There are no "soft" ways to turn off Macrovision - the player has to be chipped. I bothers me a lot because I''d like to have VHS copies of my DVD collection. Here is my verdict - next DVD I buy will have Microvision off feature (even if it is a "soft" hack). But I''ll keep this Sony for its quality

Strength:

It matches the rest of my stereo system.

Weakness:

A $150 Toshiba lasts longer and has more features.

I thought that something was wrong with my player and I was going to get it fixed. I stumbled across this website while searching for "dvd player repair." I have been a Sony guy for years and finally bought my mid-grade Sony stereo system that I researched for months. Everything ROCKS, except the DVD player that is having the same problem as everyone else. "NO DISC" I''ve been using my old Toshiba DVD player (which is the best piece of HW I have ever bought) while my Sony sits waiting for my tax refund. Now that I have it, I dunno what I''m going to do. I guess I''m going to call Sony...
