Strength:

Great quality. This is the perfect model for entry level dvd users...Unless you want to hear cd'd that you've created. There's no noise while the unit plays either.

Weakness:

This doesn't play burned cd's... This is why I'm returning this unit... It was so disappointing to me when I discovered this. LET IT BE KNOWN... Sony doesn't play burned cd's which means they will not have my business.. and hopefully not yours if you intend on playing cd's that you've made yourself. For this handicap it shouldn't reflect a price above $179.00.

I've had this unit for a month and I'm totally dissatisfyied because I only purchased this dvd unit because I wanted a cd player and figured why not get both. Well I guess I have to go through the HASSLE of catalog order return... You've been warned....

Picture, Sound, Clarity, Ease of Use

If you want a basic DVD player with component video outputs, and already have a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder, this player is your best bet. I find the picture incredible, and it goes well with the price point of my system (feel free to check out these other reviews):

- Sony 32" 32FV12 Wega TV
- Harman Kardon AVR210 Receiver
- Polk RM6600 Satellites with PSW650

My feeling was that I didn't want to invest $5000 in this system, so without going to a progressive-scan DVD player (which I couldn't use anyway, since I don't have a HD set), I couldn't justify spending more. Sony struggles with audio equipment, but their video stuff is top-notch. Mated with the Wega TV and the Harman Kardon receiver, the picture is AWESOME! Since the sound is fed to the receiver through the Optical output, I don't see how the DVD player really matters for sound anyway.

This player doesn't have a zoom function, but I don't see that as a useful feature anyway. If you want a good quality picture for a mid-level system, this is your best bet for the money!

Strength:

Quality, ease of setup and use, great remote, great on-screen menus.

Weakness:

Look no further. This is the best DVD player I've ever had. The only way you could spend more is to buy a player with built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, however, I feel that the better way to go is to have these decoders in your receiver. The remote is easy to use, the set-up is a breeze and it has more on-screen displays than you'll ever need, (I especially like the one that tells you what layer of a dual layer disc you are on). Of course none of that means anything if the sound and video aren't up to snuff, and this player excells at both. I've played at least 50 discs on this player and have not had a single problem. I previously owned a JVC XV523GD, and had nothing but problems with it. Right before I returned it, it got to the point that I couldn't play a single disc on it without it completely freezing up. The Sony is lightyears ahead of the JVC in quality and ease of use. By the way, I noticed several people who talked about a pause during the playback of some discs. I hate to state the obvious, but this is normal for dual layered discs. Nothing to do with the player.

Strength:

Price,Picture,Remote,etc. Practically everything.

Weakness:

Nothing major. On some DVD's it will freeze up for a period of 1 or 2 seconds and then play like normal again. It only occurs once per viewing of the Dvd video. The other thing that recently happened to me was that the closed captioning came on for one sentence and then dissappeared. Other than that it is an EXCELLENT DVD player and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

I don't really have much to say but that it is a great dvd player and Sears never sells it that cheap. I found a cheap price on Yahoo Shopping,($189.00), printed it up, took it to Sears, and they matched the price. But remember, Sears will not accept auction prices.

printed out the $189 price from Yahoo shopping and took it to Sears, no problem. I have since bought a Sony STR-DE845 Receiver and Sony SA-WM40 Sub. I saved over $100 on the receiver at Sears with price match and about $40 on the Sub(they made me include shipping at the Sears I got the sub from). Everything has been great so far.

Strength:

Fits well in trash can

Weakness:

Doesn't work

Like so many others who have reviewed the product here and at reviewcentre.com, I get the "no disc" message. Apparently, this product is designed to fail within its first year or so of life. I'll be replacing it with another DVD player, but not a Sony.

Strength:

Good picture quality (when it worked), now it makes a good paperweight

Weakness:

sound quality is quite shrill when it was working, obviously the inherent "NO DISC" design flaw that SONY refuses to do anything about...

Well, I was somewhat of a happy camper with this unit until the "NO DISC" error started with my unit after about 7 months of use. I tried to buck the odds and call SONY's "Customer Service" line to see if maybe all the talk on this site was resolved by them and to get my unit fixed.

After waiting 18 minutes to talk with a Customer Service rep, I was told (as expected) that SONY has had NO other reports of problems with this unit. The representative also told me that since my unit was still under warranty, that the cost of repair would be $168.94! At this point in the conversation, I brought up this site and that many others were having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM that I am having. The SONY Customer Service rep then began getting noticably nervous and began stuttering to the point that she just said "Please hold," and put me through to her Supervisor.

Once the Supervisor was on the line (her name was Linda), I was told that she would not listen to any reference that I would make to www.audioreview.com, since such reports are "not objective", "irrelavant", and "biased"; and that she would be disconnecting the call if I brought it up again. I was told to formally place my greivance on the SONY web site, not here.

Linda said that SONY's position on this issue is that there are no design flaws with this particular unit, and that if I wanted to get it repaired, that I would have to send it to an "Independent" SONY Authorized repair shop and gave me two local addresses to have it repaired. She also (again) informed me that the fee for repair would be $168.94 if the unit is under warranty, and $184.50 if the unit is not under warranty. She then also advised me that since the unit was purchased at Sears, that any repair work was "out of SONY's hands" and MUST be repaired by either Sears or an outside Authorized repair center at the above costs. Her final statement too me was to: (a) either pay their price of $168.94 for repair, or (b) go buy another unit. Either way, SONY was not going to do anything about the unit.

Per Linda the Supervisor's instructions I also left an email message with the technical unit of SONY (at their website) and was told that they would respond right away to help me with my problem. It has now been over 4 days since that email, and I have yet to get a response.

Bottom line, I have been told by SONY that they will do absolutely NOTHING about this problem, was told to go to ANYONE BUT THEM for repair, and that their "Warranty" will cost me about the same as a new unit would cost. SONY will not even acknowledge that the unit has a design flaw to it. A total cop out - Bad, Bad SONY. They have lost a customer.

I have left email messages to the Better Business Bureau and my States Attorney General. I highly suggest everyone else that has this problem do the same.
