Strength:

Great picuture and sound quality

Weakness:

C13:00 error happened occassionally, now all the time

This player worked great for about 10 months, then I started getting a C13:00 error once in awhile. I thought it was nothing because eventually the player would recognize the dvd and start playing. I read the troubleshooting section in the manual and they said it was a dirty disk...thought that was all it was. After awhile I was getting the error all the time and getting more angry each time. I recently bought The Mummy Returns, invited my friends up to watch it and got C13:00 error, I tried for 15min. to get it to play. After that night I decided to buy a new DVD player and since it's x-mas time...the time was now. I just bought the Panasonic RP56 DVD player tonight but haven't hooked it up yet, hopefully will not have the same problem. I had always had good luck with Sony products, have a good receiver for the past 10 years and it's working fine. I'm now skeptical that Sony would put out a lemon like this. I've been doing a lot of research and checking lots of websites on this Sony Model(SP360) and have read enough bad reviews that I believe there could be a legitimate class action lawsuit or a forced factory recall of the model by Sony. Anybody interested?

Strength:

Ergomatic remote and easy operation.

Weakness:

none that I can think of......

I haven't had any problems described here in these other reviews and I've had this player for about 20 months. I didn't get the extra warranty either. But it's easy to operate and the picture is excellent. I have 2 DVD players in my house, including a Panasonic RV-31 which is not as great because it has a lot of features that I will never use and the remote sucks.
I think it's a great DVD player for the price, and I trust Sony as a brand that means quality (in TV's, vcr's and dvd players anyway- for home stereo's go for JVC-- trust me).
I'd buy this product again if I had it to do over again.

Reviews

O.K. On the bad reviews....
Lets assume that the 360 was one of the best selling
dvd players in history. Of the millions sold, say 1% have gone belly up with some very unhappy people. That would be
alot of people who have to complain.

Electronics are machines and machines do break down. The question really is how reliable is the product on the average.

I can not confirm the load disk noise, and the picture looks plenty sharp. BTW one must use Video Essentials DVD or Avia to calibrate their TV's since most have the sharpness turned way up (too far) so they look sharper in the store display!

I'm concerned about the bad reviews, but for $90 picked up this as an upgrade to my dvp-s330 since it has component out
so I can connect it to my newer TV. It was a very open box unit, no manual, wrong remote, etc.

Technology is changing too fast to worry too much about reliability. Next year SACD and DVD audio will be out and you'll be happy when your old DVD player bellies up so you can upgrade!

Strength:

Easy to use and has been trouble free, good quality

Weakness:

C-13:00 I can't believe I'm not the opnly person. I though it was e defect with my "Tank Girl" DVD. It hasn't happened with any other DVD so far! But who knows !

I have been very satisfied w/ the player, but now I see that the only single problem will become overwhelming.

Strength:

Nice Remote Control

Weakness:

C 13:00, skipping, stopping etc

There is no point to rephrase what everyone wrote already. BUT ... we can complain to Consumer affairs and BBB. If enough people will complain and will paste the link from audioreview.com on the complain form, these agencies will take action.

Sony will be forced to look into it, and hopefully they will honor our complaints.

Please remember that enough complaints forced the gov't to look into Firestone and Ford practices.

To follow up on my experence so far. I finally went to the main SONY office in my city and told the guy straight that my unit's waranty was over by a month. I told the guy "you know what I'm talking about don't you?" refering to the infamous symptoms we all get. He acknoledged that they pretty well know this issue with these units. They accepted to service my unit as an act of goodwill. They won't charge me a thing from what I understand. So my advice to everybody that has the problem is to bypass the local store and to go directly to the big SONY office.

I must admit I was a bit surprised they took it like that without saying anything. It was very painless. No arguing, nothing. They saved their name as far as I'm concerned. I was very close to simply boycot SONY. I guess they see that they must provide good after sale service. Of course, the independant SONY dealer won't do anything for you. He's only concerned about his monthly incomes for his shop.

From what the tech guy told me, they usually replace the whole optical unit for this problem we have. I'm doubtful about the amount of time this repair will last seeing your comments.

I have to decide what I will do of the DVD player once they give it back to me fixed. Will I sell it or keep it, hoping it will last.

Good luck to you all.

Strength:

Great picture/sound when it works, which is rare now.

Weakness:

C13, no disk 95% of the time.

Purchased over a year ago. Now experiencing all the problems mentioned by others. C13, NO DISK. The same DVDs that used to work well work no more. These DVDs are my own and well taken care of (no scratche nor other damage).

I wish I had known the problems before buying. Oh well. This unit is a piece of junk. Time for a non-Sony unit. DON'T BUY SONY DVD PLAYERS.

Strength:

still works

Weakness:

it's likely to die out on me soon.

I've been fortunate enough to have my player still working, but after reading all the recent reviews here, i'm almost positive my player will suffer the same fate. So far, it hasn't shown any sign of skipping or malfunction and every dvd i've played has worked flawlessly. I was quite surprised to see a player made by Sony, a highly reputable company, actually has an unspoken expiration date. I've used an old proscan for almost three years, my first player...and it works fine, even though it gets intensely hot. I sold so many of these while working at Best Buy.......I now see all those service plans i bought will surely be used....too bad i didn't buy one for myself......as of now..
what's the best 200 price range dvd player out there.no sony
I think everybody here who posted a review with the infamous sony defect should all, together, demand sony to offer us something for the pain we've endured........anybody with suggestions on how we can combine our efforts to voice our concerns and make a loud bang even sony can hear it....petition, anyone?

Strength:

Slim design, easy to use.

Weakness:

Skips and the "no disk" errors, not reliable. Pretty suceptible to less than perfect DVDs (too sensitive to imperfections).

I just joined the "no CD loaded" club last night as my DVP-S360 basically died. It was skipping and jumping from the middle of a playback to the very beginning of the movie on some occasions. I figured it was normal since it's my first DVD player experience. I must say I'm very disapointed that I had to pay 300$ and over for one year of DVD playback.

My warranty is over so I'm stuck with it I guess. I had a flaming discussion with the store's manager and we kind of agreed that he could possibly help by providing me a replacement model (the new ones like the DVP-NS300 or the DVP-NS700P) at a low price. But seing all the bad reviews about SONT players so far(even the newest ones), I'm quite reluctant to buy an other SONY player, even if they would sell it to me at their cost price.

I'm kind of desperate. I looked for a few other brand and models, but they all seem to get skipping to some extent.

Is there a DVD player on the market that is rock solid? All I want is a player that plays DVDs, even when they are moderataly scratched. I'm kind of tired buying a new player each year! Did we left VHS tapes behind too quickly? humm...

Thanks for your help all!

Its looks

Weakness:

Reliability, Warranty

My Sony DVP-S360 recently failed after 8 months of normal use (playing 1-2 DVDs per week average). The player now starts up in "standby" and the drive tray would not open. "SONY DVD" comes up whenever the eject button is depressed. This product has a 90-day labor and 1-year parts warranty. Since the breakdown occured after the labor warranty expired, Sony now wants $138.56 in labor costs to repair it. I am now debating whether it is economically feasible to repair the drive or chuck it out and buy a new one.
