Strength:

ok at basic dvd functions. Lots of outputs

Weakness:

Terrible remote layout. Died after 1 year

Dreaded "NO DISC" error. What is infuriating is that the manual doesn't even mention this under trouble-shooting. It suggests that you wait 30 mins for condensation to clear. Right! I am really pissed, as I only used it <20 times and finally got arround to signing up for NetFlix. I had a Sony Boombox do the same thing, about a year ago.
The laser still puts out light, so its not dead, but my guess is that the laser is putting out too little light.

Weakness:

Does not work......

I just wanted to update the message that I left earlier regarding this unit. I was told by a SONY Customer Service rep that the problem for this unit was not known by them. The rep also told me not to post any negative information (or to listen any negative information) from this forum. The SONY rep told me that the proper place for me to log a complaint was on the SONY web site and that I should stay away from www.AudioREVIEW.com. The SONY Customer Service rep also told me that logging the complaint with SONY on their website WOULD result in some action from SONY.

Well folks, it has been over a month since I sent that email to SONY at their web site and I have still received no reply. I think that we should all follow this Customer Service reps advice and formally log our complaint with SONY. Here is the official SONY feedback web site:

To Jayman...

How did you come to the conclusion that your "laser pickup circuitry" had "burned out"?

What diagnosis have you performed to come to this conclusion?

I am not negating the possibility as Panasonic's DVD-A110 and DVD-A310 players had problems with their optical pickups overheating and failing, but I want to know how you know for certain and if you actually tried the calibration modes within the service menu.

If you don't like your Sony, then get a Panasonic. They also make excellent DVD players.

I don't like the fact that Sony, and just about every manufacturer to date, have short warranties for their DVD players either, but what can we do?

An additional safeguard is to use a high quality surge suppressor with your equipment, and disconnect everything from the mains during a thunderstorm. Have had a case where a lady had players that stopped reading discs. She'd buy one brand, and it would stop reading, then bought another brand and it would stop reading. It turned out that her power company kept surging periodically everyday. She used a surge suppressor and her problems with "rotting" players had stopped. Worth a try for prevention's sake, but there are no guarantees. Particularly if there is a design fault with your player that would cause the problem.

Also, it helps a great deal if the player is not in an enclosed space. Anything that emits heat must have adequate ventilation, even if there are no ventilation slots. Your Sony will have a small metal plate screwed to the undercarridge that acts as a heatsink for a component. This is not to say that this is the problem with your player (a thorough diagnosis from an experienced person is required to find the actual cause of failure), but people should take this into consideration when finding a place for the player.

If you want to know brands that you should truly avoid:

Oritron
Memorex
Samsung
Hitachi
RCA
G.E.
Philips
Magnavox
Sylvania
Funai
Emerson
KLH
Apex
Raite
Mintek
Aiwa
Zenith
GoVideo
Daewoo
Konka
GPX
Audiovox
LG/GoldStar

and many more that I cannot think of at this moment...

My player is still running, if anyone is curious. - Reinhart

Strength:

it has "sony" on the face.

Weakness:

there is something wrong with the electronic/mechanical interface. within two months of purchase it started locking up in the middle of a movie. sometimes it would start over. sometimes it would skip back a few chapters and continue from there. sometimes it would just stop. finally it couldn't detect the presence of a disk at all. ten months old and as dead as a boot!

we don't need fifty words, and this player isn't worth that many, anyway. our next dvd will definitely not be a sony. ain't the free market a wonderful thing? it is if you're sony!

Strength:

Great Value and quality for the money...until...

Weakness:

It died in a little over a year.

It was a fine first DVD player. It worked sufficiently while I collect the pieces for the THX home theater around it. Then is began to show symptoms...skipping chapters, returning to the main menu spontaneously, ect.

I rented Chocolat, and the player suffered a mental crisis, telling me there was no disk, when clearly the disk was in there... I reasoned with it, to no avail. I went to Hollywood video and got a different disk, thinking, "its a Sony, surely it wouldn't have died so quickly". When I got home that disk didn't work, so I tried one that I knew worked before, and then an audio CD....no disk, no disk....

On the bright side...its death was just the excuse I needed to buy something better...and forked out for the lifetime warrantee.

Strength:

Looks nice - plays CD-RW.

Weakness:

Tracking, video quality - this thing is junk!

This is my first DVD player. Should've known better, based on experiences with other Sony disc-playing products (CD players of various kinds have exhibited tracking problems). At about 6 months of use, this thing began to have what I suspect to be tracking/ alignment problems. It got worse and worse until now - 11 months later, it is unplayable. Since Sony only warrants labor for 90 days, I was out of luck. It would cost me a minimum of $99.95 labor, plus parts, if any, any additional labor, plus tax to repair it. In other words, either fix it myself or buy a new (NON-SONY) DVD player. This is a piece of crap product and I will never, never, N_E_V_E_R buy a Sony disc-playing device again!
