Look at the number of people having problems with the 560.

Same goes your TV sets, I have several in the house with bad tuners, I keep
VCR's around to do the tuning. You need to take quality issues a bit more
seriously.

C:13:00 error

I bought this player over a year ago. Now when I place a DVD in it, I get the C:13:00 disk error - regardless of which DVD I put in. Needless to say, I can't use it for anything other than a paperweight. The cost to get it fixed is prohibitive - I'll purchase new. From what I've read here and at other websites, this certainly seems to be a design flaw that Sony should be held responsible. I've contacted SONY. The person answering the phone, who probably doesn't even know what a DVD player is, stated that she had never heard of this problem with this player. Although, from the tone in her voice, I believe if she had been hooked up to a lie-detector it would have squeeled like a pig in heat. It's safe to say, I won't be purchasing any Sony products in the future and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

"Why should anyone have to re-calibrate a simple piece of equipment like this at all. I have had CD and DVD players for years without any problems and that did not require re-calibration. Routine cleaning and protection from power surges and dust should be all that is required on a device such as this. It is not as though this particular product is so complex or so evolved that there is that much that would require it to need re-calibration."

All I'm doing is trying to give instructions to help out people who are having problems with their players. These recalibration instructions have worked for people who have had troubles. Calibration can be lost through careless handling or even by playing a badly damaged or incompatible disc, like how optical alignment can be disturbed if a LaserDisc player is handled roughly. Unfortunately, there are people in this very forum who go out and pretty much say that my instructions do not work in a manner that indicates that "I" am to blame for their woes, or that I am adding to their frustration. All I am trying to do is offer help so one can get more use out of their investment. I guess the old adage is true, "no good deed goes unpunished".

Obviously, it is not intended for this product to require recalibration like this, although one time when the problem pops up should be enough. But it is something that has worked, which is why I’ve given such a suggestion. Is there something wrong with that?

I cannot bad mouth this product because I’ve never had a bad experience with my own player, and I’ve not known anyone within my local area who’s had any problems with their Sony players. Of course, my experience is not another person’s experience, and I won’t downplay the **possibility** that there could be a design defect. But, I want proof that it is a design defect from an actual diagnosis and not from word-of-mouth before I will believe it as definite fact.

And, user review sites like this are not necessarily accurate to a product’s overall quality level. Mostly, people who write reviews are usually those who have complaints who want to rant, and not necessarily reflective of the entire user base. There can be exceptions as there are some products reviewed here with high satisfaction ratings but, again, it is not reflective of enough of the market to make any kind of statement or take any kind of action that would be appropriate.

The very fact that the player had lasted one year and had low use is irrelevant. Anything during this time could be attributed to its failure, like improper placement, playing of damaged or contaminated discs (although that can be hard to believe), acts of God, or bad environment. This is also why Sony may "stonewall" the complaints as this is their mode of reasoning, along with any other electronics company. They may do a recall only if it is confirmed that there is, indeed, a fault caused by design with little or no possibility of such a problem arising from misuse.

Another reason why warranty service might be denied could be attributed to not registering your player with the manufacturer to validate the warranty shortly after purchase in the first place.

HOWEVER !!!!! Before you people decide to go bashing at me …

Sony should be more responsive to complaints, especially complaints that seem to pile up about the same problem. Something tells me that their sense of deduction may need work at the very least.

But, alas, this is not unique to any one company. If you get a defective product from *ANY* brand, always expect resistance when you try to observe your rights. This is not because they do not like the customer, they are just trying to maintain their profitability as best as possible. These companies are businesses, after all, as sad as it is to say. This is a situation where having perseverance can pay off. - Reinhart

Player died after 17 months—NO DISC error message

I am another hapless victim of the C 13:00 errors and NO DISC kiss of death for this unit. I bought it in June, 2000. By Christmas Eve 2001 (18 months later) it won't play anything. Merry Christmas.

I'm amazed at how many other people have had this problem and reported it on this website. There must be thousands of people that have purchased this unit and experienced the same problems. Even more amazing is that SONY isn't doing a thing about the problem.

SONY has lost me as a customer.

I will be telling everyone I know about the problems I've had with my SONY DVD player. SONY will lose many more potential customers because they made a cheap product that tends to break down after the warranty expires.

SONY's cheapest advertising comes from word of mouth, satisfied customers. It's upset thousands of existing customers and lost thousands more through our negative experience. This is a great example of how to do business if you don't care about your customers, which clearly is what SONY is clearly saying to all of use who have purchased the DP-360 lemon.

Time-bombed to stop working after warranty runs out.

Well, what can I say? 1 year and 1 month after purchasing this unit, I get the "no disc" error. Doesn't matter whether I pop in a SL, DL, or audio CD... it cannot see the disc. And before you chime in Reinhart, you cannot calibrate the unit if the laser pickup circuitry is burned out and cannot read the effin' disc!

An obvious lemon.

Never again, Sony. Never again...

Strength:

Hmm, I don't know if it has any strengths worth mentioning.

Weakness:

C:13:00 Error is starting to drive me insane. Constant freezing, even on brand new discs. Has difficulty fast forwarding. Also, I've noticed glitches in the picture quality on more than one occasion. Seems to happen most often during the opening battle scene in Gladiator-the picture just gets blocky and freezes up momentarily.

I have purchased Sony products in the past(receivers, speakers) and I haven't been very pleased with them. I thought I had sworn off Sony for good. Why did I buy this DVD player then? Well, the only Sony product that I have been satisfied with is the CD changer I bought about 7 years ago. I thought maybe they would have their act together with the DVD players. Apparently not. I want to toss this unit out the window. I'd try to return it to Tweeter, but unfortunately, the box and packing material are long gone. Reading the other reviews, I really think that Sony should have a recall on this model. I won't hold my breath though.

To those having difficulty after "following" some of my advice.

Are you sure you are calibrating properly?

In other words, pressing ENTER when the player prompts you to do so during the calibration?

Also, are you sure you are using the correct discs for each mode?

In other words, for single layer calibration, use **ONLY** a single layer DVD. Using a dual layer disc for single layer calibration will not work. If you don't have a single layer disc, GET ONE!! Examples of single layer discs may include various general interest discs and older movies without many, if any, extras.

You must have a single layer DVD to successfully recalibrate for single layer. You must have a dual layer DVD to successfully recalibrate for dual layer. You must have a regular CD to successfully recalibrate for CD. - Reinhart

Have had this player for almost a full year , and I must say that even after watching a countless number of rental DVD's, I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS whatsoeve.
I am concerned that it may start giving me problems due to all the negative reviews on this page, but I will first try to fix it myself. Go to this website it explains how to calibrate the laser yourself. www.members.accessus.net/~090/awh/sonydvd.html
