Strength:

A decent player when it worked. I thought the ergonomics of the remote were certainly better than others that I've seen/used.

Weakness:

In retrospect, far too many to name.

This was an entry level DVD player. If you proceed with that notion in mind, then the following review will have some merit.

I purchased the Sony knowing that I would upgrade to something better eventually. I was essentially testing the DVD market, hoping that all of the rumors about picture quality (as compared to VHS, SVHS, etc.) were true. Needless to say, the Sony held up its end of the bargain and then some. This is no doubt a reflection of the technology. Sorry, I can't give kudos to the player for that necessarily.

The difference here is that my old Fisher VCR is still going strong; my Sony DVD player is on its last legs. I'd call it dead, but it does manage to play the occasional DVD without fanfare. More than not, however, I've been getting the pesky c:13:00 error, which is a sure sign that I need to do the humane thing and put it out to pasture. I received this error most recently with the "Jurassic Park III" and "Center of the World" DVDs, both new releases as of today (12/19/01).

Simply put, if you want to just dabble in the DVD market, don't expect many features, have no desire for progressive scan, CDR/RW or MP3 playback, no hopes for SACD or DVD-Audio, you have very little expectation of any device lasting longer than a year, and you have a marked penchant for upgrades, then, yes, this is the DVD player for you.

That said, I last saw this DVD player on sale for around $159. Do yourself a favor and go get something else for your $200. I can't even with clear conscience pass this player along as charity.

Strength:

Nice remote, Good play back, nice slim look that looks great sitting on other sony home theater equipment.

Weakness:

Remote doesn't control the tv.(I programed mine to turn the tv off and on and control the volume.)

I work at a repair shop and i've seen many of these dvd players in our shop. We had probably 6 or 7 of them at once. I think they all had the same problem with reading the disc. To repair it would have costed as much or greater then a brand new one. Yet sony wouldn't ship us the boards to fix them. so we had to send the to sony for repair. And once they got back a few people didn't want there sony dvd player back and didn't want to pay the repair. So I bought one real cheap. Once sony replaced the boards in the unit it has played fine ever since. No problems at all. They could of had a bad batch of boards. who knows......

Strength:

Great features when you first get it... soon ends.

Weakness:

Dies after one year

I always buy Sony. My entire stereo system is Sony. When I bought a DVD player, I only considered buying another Sony to integrate well with my system. That was a mistake. It appears that many Sony models have the same problem this one had.

This player, at first look, seems like a great buy. Unfortunately you will soon discover that it is not.

I've had my player for 13 months. In the last month I have been getting an error every once in a while (C:13:00). The error is supposed to mean dirty disk. I took the disc out and cleaned it to no avail. I tried other discs. It said all my discs were dirty. Although it gave me the error, the discs still played.

Yesterday that changed. I was trying to play a DVD, and the player kept stopping and pausing while I was watching the film. Finally, it stopped. I thought it must be a problem with the disc. I tired another movie. The player's motor spins up trying to recognize the disc, and then says "no disc" after about 30 seconds.

Now the player does not recognize that a disc is in the machine at all. If I put in ANY kind of disc (CD, DVD, VCD) it says "no disc". Clearly there is a disc in the machine, and it is in the tray properly.

I did a quick search on the internet to see if anyone else has had this problem. I was shocked. I found literally HUNDREDS of people with the same problem. Most of them reported little or no action from Sony. I am going to try my luck with Sony customer service today. If I do not get a good response, I will write a letter to the president. This is a design flaw that seems to surface after one year of using the machine. I use the player about 2-3 times a month. Hardly over-use. I would like to prevent another person from experiencing the same frustration I am feeling.

Strength:

Nice remote, decent DVD & VCD playback

Weakness:

Won't play CD-R VCDs (more costly CD-RWs only)

My player had been acting odd for the last few weeks after almost a year of flawless service. I was getting more and more "no disc" errors and a couple of lock ups during movies. I just followed Reinhart's calibration instructions and suddenly the player is back to working flawlessly.

Hopefully I'll get at least a few more months out of this thing now. Thanks!

P.S. I finally got some use out of my Yoga DVDs... they were the only single layer ones I could find!

Weakness:

Doesn't work after one year.

I've had this player for one year. One week after the warranty, of course. I get the evil "No Disc" error. Looks like Sony also screwed me out of $300. Anyone I asked about fixing it only laughs (without paying the same price again) and tells me it's cheaper to buy another one. I won't buy another Sony product again.

Strength:

easy to use

Weakness:

It's A Sony

Worked great for about 10 months. Then all of a sudden it quit working. I called Sony customer service and was told that it would cost 159.00$ then an additional 17.00$ for shipping. After further discission I was told that they would cut the price in half and that was the best they could do. I think I will persue this to the end. The conumer should not take the brunt of this defect. I encourage anyone who bought this product to complain.

Weakness:

Doesn't play DVDs.

This DVD player would be great if it played DVDs. It used to, about 15 total. And then - NOTHING! Run from this product. Run as fast as you can. Sony, shame on you.

Strength:

Great remote control, beatiful picture and sound when it works.

Weakness:

It doesn't work. C:13:00 error, just like everybody else who buys this player.

I have to chime in with everybody else here and caution you to steer clear of the DVP-S360. It was giving me the C:13:00 error for a a few months, but just tonight, it stopped recognising disks at all. I absolutely adore my Sony Wega TV, and am happy enough with my Sony reciever (hey, we can't all afford Marantz, Denon, etc). But, how shall I put this? The Sony DVP-S360 DVD player sucks out loud and is not worthy of the Sony brand name.

To anyone not successfully recalibrating their players, a few pointers.

You must have three discs in mint condition, a single layer DVD, a dual layer DVD, and a Compact Disc, in order to have a successful recalibration.

The player *MUST* be calibrated for single layer DVDs first before calibration can be done with the other discs. Otherwise, the auto-calibration *WILL FAIL*.

Follow this order. Calibrate for single layer, then for dual layer, and finally for CD.

As alwyas, follow all onscreen instructions to the letter. - Reinhart

Complaint:
I called the service center December 28, 2001 at 4:29 pm. I complained that the dvd player dvp s360 I bought January 28, 2001 does not work. I get the c13:00 no disk error. Apparently this is a very normal problem with this cd player. Check out http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/DVD/product_47820.shtml. Anyway parts are covered under my warranty but labor isn't. I've been told its going to cost me at least $80-$100 to fix it. I paid 229 plus tax in January. 11 months later you want me to spend more money. I have bought sony products for 20 years because of the quality and reliability I have found with them. It was always worth the extra money I spent for a sony as opposed to one of your competitors. UNTIL NOW. I talked with one of your service representatives today and she couldn't do anything about it. She said off of a script I'm sorry you had this problem sir, but there is nothing I can do. I wanted to talk with someone else but she hung up on me. Lousy product, (should be recalled), Lousy warranty,(should be at least a year on everything), lousy service (rude to customer- hanging up on me and I wasn't being abusive).
I am going post this email everywhere I can. Consumer reports, epinions, amazon.com all of my friends, BBB. I'll be sending this to the top executives at Sony also. I'll guarantee you Sony will get more than $10,000 worth of negative word of mouth publicity. And I can assure you I won't be buying and DVD players from Sony until this one is taken care of.
