Have any of you with the problems tried calibrating the laser yourself? With the player OFF and your TV ON, press TITLE, then CLEAR, then POWER on the DVD player's remote. You'll see the service menu on the TV screen. Use your player remote to navigate the menu and do an auto-drive adjustment. You'll need a silver (single layer) and gold (dual layer) DVD and a CD. Let me know if it works. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! I AM NOT A SONY TECH. THIS IS INFO I PASS ALONG FROM OTHER SOURCES... although I have done the procedure myself with positive results.

Strength:

Good picture, good sound. No c13:00 error.

Weakness:

On screen menus are a bit confusing.

Not trying to add fuel to the c13:00 fire, BUT... I purchased this unit at a Sony Outlet in San Antonio as a refurbished unit over a year ago. I have used this product extensively over the past year and have had nothing but exceptional results (as exceptional as a $200 dvd player should deliver). My point is that over a year ago, Sony obviously knew how to fix this unit and deliver a product that works, but they never fixed the NEW units they were selling. Things that make you go hmmmm....

Strength:

Sony brand

Weakness:

Broke after 10 months casual use

I have the same story as most on this board. It started with skipping and pausing and eventual I got the dreaded NO Disk message and that was that. It is unfortunate that my brand loyalty can be totally crushed by one product but this is just the worst experience I have had with a small electronic. If anyone has received any relief from Sony please let me know. I have sent them an email but am open to other avenues.

I recently purchased two new Sony DVP-NS300 CD/DVD Players and I downloaded a trial version of Ulead's PictureShow which permits viewing of images on a TV that are "burned" on a CD-RW disc. Ulead's guidelines say "to make a CD disc that will play in a DVD player you must make a "Video CD".

The Sony manual says "This Player Can Play the Following Discs" and the following formats are listed: DVD Video, Video CD, and Music CD. However, the manual goes on to say "The player cannot play the following discs: CD-ROMs
(Photo CDs included), CD-Rs, Data part of CD-Extras, DVD-ROMs, DVD Audio discs, and HD layer on SACDs.

I've tried several times but all my NS-300 Player says is "No Disc" and the TV screen says "Cannot read this disc." I decided to try a couple of other brands of CD-RW disc and the only one that I found that works is a generic 3-pack (no identifying manufacturer) but it's source is unknown! The media side is gold with a large jewel case. Apparently, the key to whether or not the Sony NS-300 can read self-recorded discs is the reflectivity of the media being used. I have determined that one media that works is phthalocyanine and probably made by Princo Co. and possibly sold under the Memorex label. Unfortunately, you can't determine from the outside packaging what particular media is being used.

I'm at a loss to explain why the NS-300 is so selective about the CD-RW media material.

BTW, playing commercially-bought DVDs works great with no problems!

Gary, thanks for your message on the forum.

In terms of the calibration procedure, it is not intended to be done by regular consumers as it is a function of a special service menu that is supposed to be accessed by service persons only. The access to such a menu will void the warranty. In addition, Sony will fault the player's failure to the unauthorised access to the service menu as opposed to being a design defect, so this should not be mentioned to Sony in building a case. Furthermore, if the player is still in warranty, it is strongly advised that the player be returned to the place of purchase for an exchange or refund.

The access to the service menu is supposed to provide a solution to those having trouble with a DVD player that is out-of-warranty with the only solutions left is to buy a new player, or pay for the repairs. If the repair that is required is only recalibration, then this procedure will help to save people money if it works. The calibration is intended to be done only once, not daily. However, it's settings can be affected by careless handling during transport, the use of incorrect media, or the use of damaged media. - Reinhart

Hey, jimmyjames.
If you'd read all the reviews, you’d see that for a great number of us, the player stopped working properly after the 90-day labor warranty expired. At that point, Sony charges a flat rate of $128 to repair it. We’re not comparing it to an $800 machine. We simply expect our $200 - $250 to be worth more.

I’m happy that you have had a good experience so far. When you get to the 1-year point, let us know how it’s going.

Strength:

Inexpensive, low profile, great picture (S-video)

Weakness:

Menu navigation and functionality

I have had this unit for almost one year and have had absolutely no problems. I gets used at least once a week. It is my first DVD player and am contemplating my second purchase to get better video dac and SACD multichannel audio capability. It will most likely be a Sony. To compare an $800 DVD to a $200 DVD player seems pointless. I guess some people just don't get it. If you get a lemon, take it back. That's what warranty' and local dealers are for. You can't beat the performance of this unit for $200 or less.

I'm thinking...

Weakness:

Stops/freezes from time to time
Starts the dvd anew, all by its self
Won't read cd-r/rw
I could go on and on...

My humble opinion - save your money. Actually, your almost better off without a dvd that this unit. I too have sworn off Sony. This machine was straw that broke my back. There are ALOTS of very good dvds out there now in the $200 or less range. Go for one them. Sony should do something to make amends for this wretched mistake...
