Strength:

Excellent Video And Audio

Weakness:

None So Far

This is a follow-up review. I got this player in May of this year and wrote an initial review. After reading many of the posts that wrote about this player just "giving up the ghost" after a period of time, I am holding my breath. Now maybe I've just been lucky, but I got the C:13 error just once, and that was shortly after I got the 360 and occurred after I was trying to change a lot of settings in the menu, which undoubtedly used a lot of memory. Since DVD players are nothing short of being mini-computers, it seems to me that maybe the problem could be that most of us who own the 360 just leave the player in the "standby" mode and never power the player down from the unit itself. Since I have corrected freezes and glitches on my home computer just by restarting it, and always shut it down instead of putting it to sleep (which can cause problems), I apply the same thinking to the 360. It seems logical to me that powering it down will clear its memory and thus avoid freezes and glitches. Besides, if you read the manual, in the troubleshooting section it states that if you have player problems that could be caused by static electricity, etc. you should power off the player and then power it back on (hence the computer analogy). As I continue to use the 360, I will most certainly write back if my player becomes a shelf ornament.

''E'',

You have got to be kidding right? Unsurpassed sound?

This player if and when used to play CD Audio does such
an injuustice to music that I would rather listen to a cat
in heat Howling at the moon. This player does not play audio
well at all.

Compare this to a Dual Laser player like the Panasonic CV51
and you will soon see the shortcommings in the DVP's music
reprpoduction.

I run a fairly good set of mains off of what I consider to
be a very good A/V Receiver and when I used my DVP as a CD
Transport, numerous CD's would have distorsion that I never
heard in any other CD Player that I had these disks in. When
I upgraded to the CV51 all of the associated distorsion and
harshness associated with the DVP dissapeared and has never
reared it's ugly head again.

I am rating this product as 3+3 stars because after some 200
odd DVD's I never experianced the C:13 Error and I did manage
to sell the player for $100.00 to someone else. But I will
not buy a Sony DVD Player again.

"No Disc" message at 11 months like everybody else

Ditto, ditto, ditto.

I bought this unit based on reviews I read at this site in December, 2000/January, 2001 which if you go back and read them, are quite glowing - 4 and 5 stars consistently. Unfortunately, these poor unfortunate souls only had their unit for probably a few days or months and didn't know what was about to hit them.

I bought my unit on January 20-something, 2001. While it worked great initially, we began to have a hard time with the unit accepting discs a few months later. I didn't think it was anything major, just inconvenient. We just had to re-insert the DVDs a time or two and it worked fine after that.

At 11 months....boom. "No Disc" errors came up and there was nothing we could do to convice the unit to accept the discs. I called Sears and they had me drop it off at their service center and I am now awaiting their diagnosis. I gave them a $50 repair limit, but now I'm afraid to put this kind of money into a poorly designed machine.

I did go to the Sony web site and sent them a written complaint, but I doubt that will do much good. I agree with a couple of you that too many were sold for them to recall them.

Come on Sony! Be the good corporate citizen that you should be. Take care of your loyal customers who trusted your name and your former reputation for quality and value. I know I'll think twice before buying another Sony product.

Does anybody have any good suggestions on a second generation (non-Sony brand) DVD in this price range?

Strength:

Easy setup and operation.

Weakness:

Poor quality and customer service.

My 1st unit lasted 1 minute before it shut down and I could not remove the DVD. Best Buy replaced the unit with a new one. My 2nd unit has been used about 50 hours and is progessively getting more C13 and no disc errors.

Strength:

Nice remote, good video/audio when it worked.

Weakness:

It doesn't work.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this lemon...almost one year to the day after I got it, it froze during playback and now just gives the 'no disc' message of doom. No skipping, no errors, no warning of any kind...just a freeze and now it's dead. The service menu showed the player had less than fifty hours of total use when it crapped out, so it's not like it had led a life of hardship and suffering.

As someone who previously bought Sony products (almost to the exclusion of other electronic brands) due to their quality and robust design, I'm way disappointed in this DVD player and even more disappointed in the way Sony's apparently handling complaints. It's a real eye-opener, that's for sure.

Same problem as many other posters about this model. C13 errors followed by unrecognized disc. Sony - DO SOMETHING.

Weakness:

Stops working after 1 year; disposable product; incredibly annoying "whirring" sound while disc is spinning

Sure enough, my Sony DVD player stopped working last night, almost one year to the day of purchase, giving me the C:13:00 error. I'm a regular reader of this site, so I can't say I did not expect it. This weekend, I've scheduled some time with my buddy to run over this piece of junk with my truck.

Weakness:

C13:00/NO DISC error

Joined the "NO DISC" club today and I can't say I'm happy about it. I'm actually very shocked that I'm experiencing this from a SONY product, and that Sony does little to nothing about it! I loved it at first, but now this thing has become an oversized paperweight. I'll try the auto calibration but I am holding my breath. Should I really have to do this?!? Very disappointing...
