I have owned this dvd player Sony dvp-s360 and it has never worked right keeps giving no disc error and only play's music. I have contacted sony about this and they said they can fix for $137.00 which I feel is out rageous. So no i do not recommend this DVD player to anyone at all!! If you buy this DVD player it only has a 90 day waranty on parts and labor after that it will cost as much to fix this one than it would to buy a new one???????????????????????????????

This is a follow-up post to a previous one. A number of you have sent me details asking about the 50% discount on labor I was offered a week and a half ago. I called the Sony Customer Information Service Center at 1-800-222-7669. Their address is 12451 Gateway Blvd., Fort Myers, FL, 33913.

I have owned my 360 since February of 2001. So, that puts me beyond the 90-day warranty on labor and under the 1-year warranty for parts.

I spoke with Ricardo, a Sony Customer Service Rep. He described to me how I would have to ship my 360 from St. Paul, MN to Chicago along with a check for $128. I, of course, would have to pay for shipping it there. I mentioned to Ricardo that I didn't think this was fair, as I had seen a number of people had posted on AudioReview.com similar problems. After a bit of conversation Ricardo said that Sony was offering a 50% discount "at that point", bringing the cost for labor to $64. I'd still have to pay for shipping.

After reading the posts here of people who did send in their 360s for repair only to receive them and have them go bad again, I decided to place my 360 in a box and hope for a recall or a class action lawsuit.

An enterprising young lawyer who would like to make a lot of money should be monitoring these consumer electronics sites. Just look at the class action suit that Iomega had with their Zip Drives. The people who bought them didn't necessarily benefit greatly, but Iomega was hurt fiscally and reputation wise, and, some lawyers are really happy with their cut.

I would normally agree that consumers should vote with their purchasing dollars, but, when you have something so wrong with a company's moral and ethical standards, a bit more should be done.

Quit working

Add me to the list of people who were 'used' by Sony without a condom or vaseline.

(Same 'No Disc' error and the same run around from Sony. Just came across this site last night. I can't believe I actually spent time resetting and trying to calibrate it. Amazingly, my player lasted 18 months.)

Reinhold,

The reason that your good dead is being punished is, in my opinion, due to the fact that as long as people perform this calibration on their own there is not enough "evidence" that can be presented to Sony to prove that they have a problem. Since Sony does not have the emperical data to support the claimed problem with the S360, they are going to be very reluctant to move away from their current stance. Thus, the situation will continue, and more people will complain about the need for calibration and the method of calibration.

Since the individuals are frustrated with their equipment and the manufacturer, they are looking for someone to heap this frustration upon. Since you came to their rescue you are the one that will be heaped upon.

If everyone that is experiencing this problem would provide Sony with copies of their work invoices for correcting this problem, or at least contact them with the serial nuimber of the unit having problems, Sony will then have some proof that the problem is not just gossip on an internet site. The call load alone from everyone claiming to have this problem will annoy them to the point that they will do something.

As you say since most of the people reading web sites such as this are those that either really love their purchase, or have some sort of complaint. That alone tells me, and I assume you as well that there are potentially hundreds of people out there with this problem. The issue is how do you make them aware that they need to do something.

I personally would prefer that Sony address a hardware/software problem rather than me having to perform "routine" calibrations on a DVD player.

I appreciate your opinion, as well as your reasoning for providing the temporary solution. The problem is that Sony is not providing the long term solution.

Apparently intended to be a disposable consumer item

Add me to the (long) list. With less than 50 hours of use (since May, '01), this player is starting to jam up when changing layers on the disc. Sometimes it's an area of scrambled pixels on the screen; other times, the picture freezes and then jumps to the dvd menu. Like many other s360 owners, I'll go through the motions with Sony customer service. I'm not expecting much, but I want it to be documented. I'm also going to contact the retailer and every consumer publication, as well as my state's Dept. of Consumer Affairs. Sony really should be pressured to make amends. If they would only realize it's in their own best interest.

Great player

Weakness:

sometimes skips

I came upon this page by a bit of searching, and was shocked to see the number of problems that other customers are having.

The only problems I have really noticed are that occasionally during normal playback, the disc may skip a bit. This is particular to certain DVDs, which are rentals, so I do not think that this is a problem with my DVD player.

I will keep a look out for the C13 problem, however. Thanks for the comments.

Uh, Doesn't work? Sh!t quality

NO DISC. Doesn't matter what I stick in there. Now I just want to say that this DVD player has MAYBE 30 hours on it in the past year, was not subjected to any thunderstorms or poor ventilation. This thing has been BABIED and as I said, rarely used.

This product is total junk, and Sony should be ashamed to treat us (THE CUSTOMER) like this. Now I have to look sideways at my Wega and wonder when that is going to fail.

I'm filing a BBB complaint and so should you.

When it worked, it did do a fairly decent job.

Weakness:

C:13

Well, I did a simple calibration, not the method Reinhart suggested. Just a single layer dvd and a dual layer dvd. Didn't help at all. I'm kinda frsterated at the player, and don't want to spend any more time with it. I'm going tommorrow to go pick up a Pioneer 440, it has good reviews, and can do all the things I want it to. (Aside from SVCD, meh.)

The player worked fine for a while, then it started skipping, seemingly randomly. Then, the C:13 errors started popping up. For those of you who don't have it... you can't understand how aggrivating this player can be. IT's gotten to the point where I've just given up. I found the reviews here (and some other site, I can't recall now) about a week ago, and now that I see it's a common problem, this guy is gone. I think it still plays CDs fine, but i'll check. It's going to be a CD player after this.

Sony's lost another customer. Not like I was ever going to spend a huge amount of money on teir products, but don't you think a little is better than none?

Nope, this is one more person who has become Anti-Sony for life, and I'll readily encourage other people to stay away from that brand, if their CS on this issue is any indication of the future.

Cheers
James.

Good Sound Quality when it works

It's sony

When I first bought this dvd player I was pleased with my purchase, considering it didn't dent my wallet too badly. I've had this for about 1 year now and I can't stand this peice of junk. It will no longer play a dvd. After about 6 months it started acting a bit strange, it would replay the chapter that it just finished or it would outright stop the movie. Sometimes in the middle of a movie it would exit back to the menu screen. I then brought it in to be refurbished. Another 6 months have past I just get a "C 13" on 80% of the dvds I put into the player.
This dvd player is junk. DO NOT BUY IT!

Strength:

Unsurpassed sound and picture with nice on-screen menus.

Weakness:

Optical head alignment typical of most DVD/CD players May not play DVD-R created media without skipping.

OK Sony has been getting a bad rap for not playing or skipping DVDs. Keep in mind you may think this is not true, but you really have to remember DVD players are marked FRAGILE on their packaging. So if you get yours home and the conrner of the box is smashed or dented in, guess what? You will have issues down the road, so go exchange it.

The warm sound of a Sony product is unparralleled to any other brands. I had a Toshiba, it seemed a tiny bit more reliable and more sturdy than a Sony, but the picture and the sound were not as precise and 'warm' feeling as with the Sony. You do get more performance from a Sony. I have a Sony DVP-S360 and yes it has some bugs, but it still plays with great sound and picture quality.

If you like getting the newest model DVD/CD frequently then it will last you long enough with pleasure. If you plan to keep ANY DVD/CD long buy the extended service plan, I got a 4 year plan for $49 that includes the repair of any malfunction of the unit no matter what is the cause it is covered. The peace of mind is greatest with one.
