Strength:

Reasonable cost--no real complaints besides the increasingly common C:13:00 disc reading error.

Weakness:

Increasingly common C:13:00 disc reading error makes player all but unusable. Prior to the major problem, only complaint was no CD-R support.

This is clearly a case of defective hardware... I would certainly be interested in a class-action lawsuit if it came to that. I'm going to try my retailer--see if they will at least give me a discount on a replacement. I'll also try Sony--although they seem to have been completely unresponsive. Perhaps the bad marketing publicity of a class-action lawsuit would be enough to kick Sony in gear. I love my WEGA---but if Sony can respond to this problem, my next (insert any consumer product here) certainly wont be a Sony.

Strength:

Price, at the time

Weakness:

poorly made. C:13 errors, cant read disk, etc.

after about 1 yr. started the problems of pausing in the middle of playing. And then the infamous "c:13" error. Paid to have it fixed once. Not going to pay again. Made the mistake thinking that Sony has all quality products. I will not by another DVD player. Oh by the way, the customer service help was a joke and not at all helpful.

"E," an Audio Enthusiast from Chicago, posted this on 1/8/02:
"...but you really have to remember DVD players are marked FRAGILE on their packaging. So if you get yours home and the conrner (sic) of the box is smashed or dented in, guess what? You will have issues down the road..."

Holy crap! He's right! How could we all have been so stupid not to realize that we all dropped our Sonys in precisely the same manner as to cause them all to produce the exact same tracking error (i.e. "issues") 6-12 months after starting to use them? We should all be ashamed of ourselves. Sony (and "E"), please forgive us for blaming you and for not carefully reading that "FRAGILE" warning on the box.

Sony name, bad-ass remote, great styling

Weakness:

C:13:00... need I say more?

What else can I possibly say about this DVD player that hasnt already been said in this list of reviews? Dont get me wrong - when my DVP-S360 worked, I loved it. I've had this unit exactly 11 months to the day, and it has finally decided to crap out. A few months back, I started gettin the dreaded C:13:00 error, and like everybody else, a quick eject/re-insert and power cycle or two and it would work fine. As of today, however, I have certain DVDs that will no lnger play no matter WHAT I do.. also some new ones right straight out of the package as of yesterday that get te same result. I've tried the recalibration (several times.. followed the single layer, dual layer order EXACTLY) that seemed to work for others with this problem, but it didnt solve anything for me. All in all, I'm very dissapointed in Sony for this abomination of a DVD player. I guess all thats left to do now is scrape together what little money I have and go out and buy the Panasonic that I should have bought in the first place.

Weakness:

doesn't work

i've had the same problem as everyone else. i emailed sony customer service and they tell you to call customer service. so i called customer service and they did absolutely nothing for me. they tried to tell me that it's from a buildup of dirt and it'll happen to all players, yeah right. i've only had it for 8 months before i started to get the no disk error. surely there is something that we can do to make sony listen. i'll never buy sony again, and i'll encourage everyone that i know to do the same, but that just doesn't seem like enough.

Picture Quality....(When it worked)

Weakness:

Oh Please...

"Holy P.O.S. Batman!!"...I can't believe that within 3 lousy days that 3 or 4 people (Including myself) wrote in to this site with the SAME PROBLEM (the "No Disk" death error)!! I logged on to see if anyone might have been experiencing the same problem and what to do to correct it, but this?!

The optical board on this cheap product are starting to fry, and I can just imagine how many people are going to follow this message with the same problem, but the really sad thing about this is that Sony knows about this, and won't do anything to make this mistake right.
Just imagine how many other dissatisfied Sony owners don't know about this site are going through the same thing as we are.....un-freakin beliavable.
Look, Sony knows that this DVD player is a bonified Lemon, but they also know that this player was their biggest DVD seller by far, so if they put in for a recall, they will lose a CRAP load of money.

Don't be fooled when you call Sony Customer Service and they say to you that they haven't heard anything about the problems related to this product....that's total B.S.!

DO THE RIGHT THING SONY!!! You've made a global mistake in one of your products (Optical Board).......FIX IT!!

Strength:

Many audio options work well, but that dosen't matter when it won't read DVD's

Weakness:

Dosent play CDRW's, Dies just months after 1 year warreny ends.

"NO DISC" Error has ended the short life of this cheap product. Being a college student with very limited funds and having this player die on Christmas Day after about a year and 4 months of use really upsets me. Sony must do something to make this right. Now I am worried that my Sony CD Player and Reciever, about the same age as my DVD player, will fall to similar fates. My money I was planning on using on new front speakers now must go towards a new DVD player. Anyone planning on taking some kind of action against Sony please let me know.

Strength:

Inexpensive, excellent remote, component outputs, both coazial and optical digital outputs, great colors (very strong black)

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R/RW or MP3

Despite the other reviews on this product, I've yet to have problem one with this player (guess I'm a lucky one!). I've gotten great use from this player. I use it quite heavily as well.

My only complaint is the lack of CD-R support. If you're into burning your own VCDs this is NOT the player for you.
I don't know if later model years had problems or what, but mine has been a straight shooter since day one.

Sony should recall this product. I filed a complaint with BBB. Anyone unhappy with their dvd player dvp s360 should also. Its very easy. address is: www.betterbusinessbureau.org

Complaint:
I called the service center December 28, 2001 at 4:29 pm. I complained that the dvd player dvp s360 I bought January 28, 2001 does not work. I get the c13:00 no disk error. Apparently this is a very normal problem with this cd player. Check out http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/DVD/product_47820.shtml. Anyway parts are covered under my warranty but labor isn't. I've been told its going to cost me at least $80-$100 to fix it. I paid 229 plus tax in January. 11 months later you want me to spend more money. I have bought sony products for 20 years because of the quality and reliability I have found with them. It was always worth the extra money I spent for a sony as opposed to one of your competitors. UNTIL NOW. I talked with one of your service representatives today and she couldn't do anything about it. She said off of a script I'm sorry you had this problem sir, but there is nothing I can do. I wanted to talk with someone else but she hung up on me. Lousy product, (should be recalled), Lousy warranty,(should be at least a year on everything), lousy service (rude to customer- hanging up on me and I wasn't being abusive).
I am going post this email everywhere I can. Consumer reports, epinions, amazon.com all of my friends, BBB. I'll be sending this to the top executives at Sony also. I'll guarantee you Sony will get more than $10,000 worth of negative word of mouth publicity. And I can assure you I won't be buying and DVD players from Sony until this one is taken care of.
