Strength:

Excellent build quality.
Ability to play VCD discs.
Remote control layout.
System setup navigation.
Incredible picture with 16:9 capable monitors.
Dual sets of stereo and video outputs.
Toslink optical and coaxial outputs.

Weakness:

Harsh CD redbook audio playback.
Inability to read CD-R discs.
Average picture quality with 4:3 monitors.

This is an excellent DVD player with a low profile and small footprint, excellent construction quality, intuitive onscreen system menus, ergonomically designed remote, and versatile output layouts. To those who think the Sony remote needs work, try the remote for the Toshiba and the Panasonic models! Compatibility is excellent, even with problematic software. Picture quality on an anamorphic capable set is astounding. However, picture quality on a standard 4:3 set is not impressive. This is attributable, however, to how the Sony player deals with anamorphic downconversion. Most DVDs are 16:9 anamorphic enhanced. The player has to downconvert the 16:9 image to properly fit on a 4:3 television set, otherwise, the image will look vertically stretched. Downconversion, unfortunately, brings about image artifacts like edge aliasing (pixelation). The pixelation is dealt with on the Sony player by reducing edge detail. The picture looks soft, but there is no pixelation. Toshiba players do not dull the picture like this, but they will show every imperfection in the downconversion process. So, it goes like this. You can either watch a soft picture, or a picture that is excessively pixelated. If any of you guys that are complaining about a soft picture have something like a Sony Trinitron WEGA, 27 inches or up, hooked up with this player, there is a way of increasing the picture quality. Connect the player to the monitor by S-VIDEO or component video, disable downconversion on the player, enable 16:9 enhancement on the set, and be prepared to get blown away. As for CD audio, the sound is harsh. But, then again, this is a DVD player, designed more for playing DVD videodiscs, not CDs. Overall, this is an excellent DVD player worth attention. With a good setup, it will not disappoint. - Reinhart

Weakness:

Wont play my discs. Has a black digital line going through the middle of the screen. Subtitles appear randomly and for 2 sentences at the most

I bought this S360 a month ago before I moved apts. My old roommate had a JVC dvd so no need to use mine. I opened it up this past week, threw in a brand new dvd and I have black dots going through the middle of the screen. Also random subtitles appear. They are blurry and go away after a couple of sentences. This happens on Every disc. Since it has been more than a month sony will not fix it and replace it.

Has any one else had this problem? What did you do to fix it? Any other DVD players you recommend?

Thanks,

Mike

Strength:

Good basic interface, good number of connections for the price.

Weakness:

Stops working altogether after 12 months.

I used this product for one year and five days and up until today I was basically satisfyed with the product. Now however I am having the same problem that many other people are having. I can insert any disc and it does not recognize the disc.

Best to stay away from this one.

Weakness:

Player always says there is no DISC when inserting a valid CD or DVD.
No real fast forwarding like 4x-20x.

I bought this player for my brother and the stupid thing just died last weekend. It was a wedding thank you gift and now it is a big paper weight. I'm wondering why Sony is dropping off the charts in quality like the stock market.

My experience has been pretty bad lately.
1. Killed my 36FS12 TV when plugging in a RCA Direct TV.
2. My supposedly STR-GA8ES receiver only has a 3 year warranty and is making some hissing sound and was unable to power off one time.
3. My 12X CDR burner cannot burn reliably at 8x or 12x. 4x works fine. My friend bought the same one and his works fine.
4. My 20" Sony TV lost its tuner is now a great TV minus the tuner.

If any other Sony products starts breaking down, it's going to be the Ford/Firestone problem.

Strength:

Easy to operate, slim & sleek and the name; "Sony"

Weakness:

Stops working after 9 months of use

I had the Sony DVP-S360 for 9 months. After 6 months, I would frequently get a C13:00 message, (dirty disc) but after ejecting several times and pressing play, it would eventually work. I figured it was possibly dusty inside so I bought a DVD Lens Cleaner Kit. That didn't help. Finally, this past weekend, it stopped working completely. This time it says "No Disc". I found my receipt and called the dealer where I bought it and he said it has a 1-year warranty and to take it to the Sony Warranty Depot, so I did. I dropped it off this morning and they said they will call me to let me know the "Status", in appx. 1 week. I will keep you all informed how I make out. I hope, for Sony's sake, that they will repair it no charge, but from reading the reviews on this website, I may not be a happy customer in the end. I will not let this one be swept under the rug by Sony. The fun has just begun!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

Worked well when new

Weakness:

Died at 16 months

I too have had the skip-C13-no disk cycle of symptoms as my player died. The process from the first bad skip to death was about 10 days. I took into be repaired, the cost for new optics and a few resistors was $220 CAD. This is 50-80% of the cost of a new player, I will scrap this one, buy a Toshiba and think carefully about buying anything from Sony again. There is clearly a major design flaw in this player, a company that cared about its customers and future market would stand behind its product. (I did contact Sony Canada and ask for help.)

Another victim of "No Disc" and "Error C 13". The same discs work just fine with other players. Intermittent skipping and freezing problems from the very beginning and now the player won't read anything.

Strength:

Simple, not overloaded with features. Also purchased it because of its brand name "SONY".

Weakness:

"No Disc Error" showed up six months after I purchased it, and literally stopped working immediately following the error.

After reading all these reviews about this product, I am disappointed that there seems to be nothing we can do to get this matter resolved with SONY.

I regret not reviewing this "horrible, flawed product" before making my purchase. I automatically thought, "It's SONY, so it MUST BE GOOD!" Evidently, I was wrong. I currently own a SONY 27" TV, which I have had for the past 10 years, and only ONCE did I have problems with it. I was also looking into getting a SONY Digital TV, but I have now changed my mind, and will definitely purchase a different brand instead. TOUGH luck to SONY!

I have also sent in a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and my States Attorney General.

Strength:

plays perfectly every DVD including Matrix!

Weakness:

Doesn't play CDR

Love this DVD player. Sony rocks. The remote is very good (something many people seem to be complaining about on other DVD players). The instructions are easy to read. The on screen text display is a nice option. Plays music CDs well too. Great price!
