Strength:

Ease of Use, front panel controls,

Weakness:

I have problems getting some dvds to start.

All in All I am very satisfied with this product, I got it for a great price at Brndsmart in there scratch and dent section. I love this DVD player. The only problem with this machine so far is that some dvds wont work sometimes. Even brand new DVD's out of the box. This does not always happen, for instance Terminator2 will not play, I get a error on the machine starting with a c-13 or something. Some movies will sometime and not at other times??? I have read everybody elses review and i seem to be alone here but, thats life.
If not for that problem, this is a great machine for the price.

Weakness:

pause on layer change.

I like this player it seems to do its job well. But I have noticed on two movies a pause between layers. (saving private ryan, red octuber)I don't know if this problem is specific to this player because I have played only a few discs on my computer.

Strength:

Great picture, good sound, quality

Weakness:

as with most Sonys, a little pricey

Ive had this for about 3 weeks and have played over 15 movies on it so far (all rentals) and they have all played flawlessly. The picture is great and the sound is fine. I notice no noise at all while playing. It has played some discs that were pretty scratched up with no problem and the layer change is no big deal at all and it only happens on a few movies. All in all, a great DVD player and I would highly recommend it to anyone regardless if they have a beginner or advanced set up.

Weakness:

noisy, no cd-r support, sometimes skip or freeze on rented dvd disc which are scratched

It's my first dvd player so I have been looking and searching for a long time to buy the wright one. I have try all the models describe previously and I can say that I have been a little bit disapointed with image quality of other products that stand fairly in the same price tag.

I have noticed that specially on dark background scenery, the color is displayed in a mosaïc or colored patch form and it giggle a lot instead of smooth color rendering. At that time, I was really tinking to keep rent video casette instead of dvd's... but after 3 months, I can say that I am quite happy with the Sony player and that image sharpness and specially sound quality really outperform VHS. (duh...)

The Sony DVP-360 gave anyhow the best image quality (to my taste) on all models I have tried and they have been on the S-Video output on same monitor. Thanks to my dealer who let me do multiple tests. The closest was the Pioneer but image was darker than all other models and it has a weird amber front display. The worst was the Apex (pfff...) and the Denon because of the high price tag and awfull pixelated image.

Of course, other models had strengths like more silent operation, cd-r compatibility, mp3 decoding (but a dvd player is for listening films after all... that's why on your receiver you have a separate input for CD player ! It's my opinion...), zoom and better resistance to scrachy discs but I was really looking for good smooth image quality and I was ready to sacrifice a freeze or a skip (which happend to Hitachi and Pioneer too afterall...) over the image quality... for the moment...

My system is :

Denon AVR-3801 receiver, Sony DVP-360 dvd player (fiber optic out), Sony CDP-CE345 cd player (fiber optic out), Sony TC-WR690 twin tape deck, Sony SLV-575UC video tape player, Sharp CC-29S50 27" monitor, Camber Laser9 main speakers, Paradigm CC-170 center, Paradigm Atom rear surround, Paradigm PDR-10 sub.

That's about it ! I am really pleased with the overall quality of my system. Simple and working great for the small place I have.

So if you are looking for a nice DVD player, I recommand the Sony DVP-360 mainly for the smooth image quality compared to competitors in the same price range. The player have great general features, well design and displayed menus. The remote can control the volume of the majority brand A/V receivers. Connections are digital audio coax and optical, S and components video outputs. You should not be disappointed for the price that unit worth.

I used this player since May 2000 with no issues. Suddenly, in April 2001, it will no longer recognize discs. After two calls to Sony support, they inform me that they will repair it for $138.00 if I carry it in to the local repair center. Well, as you all know, this player can now be had for about $150. I guess it's time to throw it out. Why spend $138 if I can get a new one for near the same money? I thought buying a Sony would preclude these types of problems - but, I was wrong. I see from the reviews that I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. Save your money and buy another brand. I've had a Pioneer for over two years with NO problems. Too bad Sony. If only you could find a way to support us without gouging us for $138 just to look at it!

Strength:

Works great for about 8 months.

Weakness:

Dies after 8 months

I bought this product in November 2000, after reading many favorable reviews on this and other websites. However, after about 8 months of relatively flawless operation, the player stopped working. I was in the middle of watching Gladiator, when it started to stutter. I stopped the playback, and then pushed play again, but it gave me the error "code 13:00". That means disc dirty, so I tried other discs, including a brand new one, that I hadn't opened yet. Then I tried CD's but to no avail. After a couple days, and after reading recent reviews below on this site, I gave up. Upon weighing the options, I decided to not pay the $138 to have it fixed, and I bought a new DVD player, the Sony DVP-NS300. I do have faith in Sony products, I have a receiver, CD player and tape deck that have been working great for over 5 years. Since the NS300 is the S360's successor, I am counting on it to have solved the problems. However, my advice on the S360 is DON'T BUY IT!!

Strength:

Good picture (rich color) and sound, full dvd menu control on front panel, efficient remote, overall a great player but...

Weakness:

ITS LOUD AS HELL!!!! Tray noise is insufferable... Also does not play CD-R's, not big deal to me, Sony customer tech support wait times

For the price I got this at I'd be foolish not to keep it...it was a clearance/return model marked down to 175, and with 50 dollar rebate the grand total is 125. Not bad for a good rated player. However, it is a Sony, and I HATE Sony.

Pretty much it's your standard entry level player, but this one seems to be alot more user friendly. The menus are colorful and easy to navigate, the fact you can control everything from the front panel is also a rarity on entry level players. I like the remote alot, its the perfect size and not too complicated to use. The picture and sound are great, especially the picture. The colors are very rich and dont look so artificial like the other players ive owned (sam-suck and pioneer). As far as it not playing cd-r's, I bought this thing to play movies not music. I already have a cd player for music, so I dont care that it doesnt play cd-r's one bit. So far its a great unit

However...

The sound of the disc spinning inside this thing is almost driving me to insanity. Even the POS Samsuck 709 was whisper quiet when I had it. Its got this high pitched, shrill spinning noise that just irritates the hell out of me. I thought it was just mine, but the sales clerk said that Sonys are quite loud and other reviews on this site have confirmed that this is indeed so. I live in an apartment, so turning up the volume to drown it out is not really an option. I called Sony tech support, or TRIED to I should say, but every time I call the average wait time is about 30 minutes, so i cant even talk to sony about it to see if there is a remedy. This is why I normally dont buy sony products cause their customer service blows. If anyone else has had this problem and had it fixed by a sony service center, please let me know. I dont want to exchange as i dont want to pay 250+ for a brand new unit. I got such a good deal here and dont want to lose the chance to get a good player for this cheap.

Because of the tray noise I have to give this less stars then i'd like to. What good is sound and picture quality drowned out by a spinning disc?

THE DAMN SPINNING NOISE, doesnt play cd-r's, Sony "customer service"

Its a great entry level player and for the price i got it on clearance, you cant beat it.

HOWEVER

The sound of the damn disc spinning inside this thing is so loud its driving me to insanity. I guess its a trademark of this thing, at least according to this site and the sales clerk. What good is awesome picture and digital sound if you have to deal with this shrill annoying noise in the background??? My crappy sam-suck 709 was whipser quiet. I kind of expected more from sony, but again as i have in the past, sony ALWAYS lets me down.

I live in an apartment so turning up the volume isnt really an option for drowning it out. It does seem to get better as it warms up, but then it gets louder then softer, then louder again, soft again. It's driving me nuts. I TRIED calling Sony customer service a few times, but seeing as how the average wait time was always in excess of 30 minutes i never did get to talk to anyone about this problem yet. Sony customer service sucks. I hate sony in general but for the price I got it (125) i hate to return it just to pay 250 for a brand new one (mine was clearance/cust return). If anyone has had this problem and/or had it fixed by an authorised service center, please let me know.

I have to rate this product low because I cant enjoy movies with the tray noise, i bought this thing specifically to enjoy movies.
