Strength:

None really, it's always have problems playing disks.

Weakness:

Same as most, C13 error just started today.

Same as most, C13 error just started today. Before it would freeze and then jump to a diffent scene. I could always get it working again but ejecting the disk. Today though that didn't work. I'm going to try to use the calibrate it via this site

But I'm not expecting much.

Strength:

very low-profile, looks great with alone and with other components, bright display. and best of all....ITS NOT A SAMSUCK!

Weakness:

No zoom (or maybe I haven't found it yet)

First of all..."Kudos!" to Sears for matching internet prices. I haven't fully tested the player capabilities, but I do know it is fairly user friendly and plays great. Movies tested were The Cell and U-571. The picture and sound were sharp in both films. I have no doubt that CDs will play superbly.....its made by Sony. But, I have to give it a 4-rating do to the lack of zoom.

Strength:

Excellent Picture only with a top Quality S-VHS cable

Weakness:

No Zoom , poor picture quality with regular RCA Cables

I have had this unit for about two weeks now and have played almost 6 DVD's on it. I must admit that I was quite disappointed with the picture quality when I first connected it up to my Sony 32S42 Trinitron TV, almost thought that there was something wrong with the unit when I compared it to the Toshiba SD-1200.
BUT all that changed when I bought myself a Top Quality S-VHS Cable .WOW what a difference , trust me all these other reviewers who mention the soft picture should see the Night and Day picture change between cheap cables and High quality cables .
I purchased a 3ft Acoustic Research from Future Shop .
Anyone who has bought this unit or is thinking of buying one should definately purchase this cable .
Compared to the Toshiba DVD player the Sony wins hands down
Not only do you get an Optical Digital out , you also get Two of every other output . 2 analog, 2 s-video , 2 Video etc.
This unit has not skipped or locked up me like the Samsung used to.
Fantastic DVD Player ! It Looks sleek too compared to the other generic looking units out there .

Strength:

design, features, remote, sound, plays pal format vcd's correctly

Weakness:

none so far

my old dvd player worked ok for everything but pal format vcd's (from hong kong) it would cut off the top and bottom of the picture and stretch the image so you could not view the subtitles at all. and the vcd picture quality was horrible, even worse then what they should be. if you could believe this, i got rid of this player because of this problem. after a lot of research i decided to get this player. it was exactly what i needed. i was going to go with a pioneer dv-333 or dv-c503 but to me the unit just looked cheap and i didn't like the remote. i've also never had any luck with pioneer. i once bought a pioneer dts receiver and it was dead right out of the box. overally, i can't think of anything bad about this player. at first i thought i wouldn't go with this player because of the loud sounds when dvds played. i did not have any problems with that, even two feet away with the sound down all the way i still can not hear it. and no, i am not deaf! every single dvd i've tried had no problems, even t2 the ultimate edition, which some people have had problems with. another thing that amazed me COMPARED to my old dvd player is the sound. way better, and i don't even have a DTS receiver! (plan on buying one soon!) the image quality is fine to me, no complaints there. this dvd player may cost $25-$50 more then your average dvd player but to me it's well worth it.
BTW i tried to get this at years using an advertised internet price of $200 but they said they no longer accept internet price matching?!

Strength:

Good entry level DVD player. Easy to set up. Has all the necessary features.

Weakness:

On screen menu a little cluttered, and it covers most of the screen when watching a movie. Remote too similar to other SONY remotes.

Since this is my first DVD player I don't have much to compare it to. My roommate has a first generation SONY DVD player and for the money he paid this one has all the same features if not more. Set-up was easy and so far it looks and sounds great. I only have a Pro-Logic receiver, so I can't comment on the digital output.
The remote is easy to use but it looks almost the same as my SONY VCR remote and I often grab the wrong one. The on screen menus are easy to use but when watching a movie it can clutter the screen. Also I guess some people said that the drive is noisy when watching a movie, but the only time I notice anything is when I am using the menus on the DVD or changing chapters, than the laser has to move. When I watch a movie all the way through there is not any really noticeable noise.
Overall I am glad this is my first DVD player. I don't have a great TV and If I have the money for a progressiv TV I will probably have enough for a new DVD player.

Here is my setup:
Receiver: DENON ARV 2500 (for sale if interested)
CD PLayer: DENON DCM 260
DVD Player: SONY DVP S360
Main Seakers: B&W 602
Center: B&W CC3
Rears: B&W 302
Subwoofer: Velodyne CT-80

Strength:

Ease of use, features, outputs, size, price

Weakness:

None that I can't think of. Haven't notice noisy transport.

My first DVD player, but I did extensive research. I opted for a low-end model with low entry-price so if I do upgrade in the future, it'd be easy just to put this one aside in a secondary system.

Chose this one based on etown review and the reviews here. Thanks to those posting about Sears price matching. The first Sears didn't match, but the salesman in the 2nd one gladly matched the lowest internet price I found.

It's the slimmest DVD player out there, just short of 3" tall.

Setup was easy. I use Better Cables component output to my KV27FV16 Wega and digital coax to my Yamaha RX-V496.

Plenty of outputs. It also has two S-Video outs so you can compare monitors side-by side.

Configuration screen is very easy to use and pretty extensive for a model at this price. For someone who was new to DVD, I got things going in a few minutes. It does lack fine-tuning controls (color fine-tuning, etc). But the default is great.

Remote is ok, but I use the remote from the RX-V496 (includes control for DVD menu). Unlike other competing models, this model's front plate has joystick control to access the config screen and the DVD menu.

Strength:

Dolby Digital, DTS. A/V, S-video, AND Component outputs. OK remote. It looks awesome. Has virtual surround sound, and many other cool features. Excellent picture and sound.

Weakness:

No zoom, remote not anything great.

I have had this DVD player since the day after Thanksgiving.
Since I first took it out of the box, by the way it felt and looked, I knew i was in for a real treat. Setting it up only took about 5 minutes and was pretty easy. The first DVD I watched was Jurassic Park and the picture was amazing.

The remote is pretty cool, not the best I've seen though. If you are looking for a great DVD player under 300 dollars, get the Sony DVP-S360, it's well worth every penny. I give it a 4.7 - 4.8 out of 5. If you have any questions about it, you can E-mail me at SnakeEyeJP@AOL.com

Strength:

Build quality, ergonomics, remote control, robust

Weakness:

Transport is noisy, picture is a tad soft

Few quick comments on the DVP-S360:

- Sony excels at ergonomics. I find this player very intuitive in use.
- Build quality is good (for the price). The unit feels solid.
- I like the remote control. It is easy to use. It also turns on my tv (a Panasonic) and operates the receiver volume. It's nice to only need use one remote when watching a DVD.
- So far, the tracking has been robust. I've watched 20 or so rented DVDs, and haven't had any problems.
- Negative: the transport is pretty noisy. I can hear it during the opening credits spinning around. Once the audio tracks starts it is inaudible, but it is somewhat distracting.
- The unit was $250 from Amazon, but I used a $50 coupon to get it down to $200. $200 seemed a fair price.
- Getting a DVD player has renewed my interest in movies. I now watch 2-3 DVDs a week, instead of twice a month with VHS.

Weakness:

fake picture, cloudy picture, flickering picture... get the picture?

i returned this player 3 times thinking each time it was a defect because the picture was utter trash. i put the matrix in and it was the most pixelated, flickering thing ive ever seen. the picture was clowdy and looked so fake i thought i was watching it on my computer. it had to be a defect, wrong. the problem was i was comparing it to my sony playstation 2, a player that i thought was a "throw-in", bare minimum unit provided only because the medium used in the games is also in dvd format. this is not the case. to those who think this player and ones like it are good picture quality please be advised, there is much room for improvement here. and for the price tag ($300) the PS2 has got to be the greatest value in the world if it was just a dvd player (ones of similar quality average around $600), however it is hardly just a dvd player. i feel for all of you having to limit yourself to such a pathetic, flawed product as this. i look forward to a day that all can be as lucky as I.

Strength:

It plays DVDs (not a joke); price; has every output; build quality; slim with small footprint; I happen to like the remote and find the menu a breeze.

Weakness:

Doesn't really work as a CD player: Music sounds a little harsh (btw sony advertises 96kHz/24-bit audio D/A conversion but will only output 48kHz from the digital outs), and it won't even play CDRs; Labor warranty only 90 days; Not entirely silent.

I wanted a cheap DVD player. I have several friends with RCA's and they all seem to love them, so I bought a 5215.
And then exchanged it because it wouldn't play half the time.
And then returned the second one because it wouldn't recognize ANY of my DVDs (not to mention 5 minutes of disc spinning made the unit too hot to touch).
Like I said I have 3 friends with this exact model and 2 more with the previous model (5220) and they all swear by them. Guess I'm just lucky. Anyway, I went back out to look, this time doing lots of research. I came down to 2 models: the Pioneer DV333 and the Sony DVP360. The Pioneer looked ugly and felt really cheap. The sony looked slick and felt solid. Also I've had good luck with sony. The fact that target was selling them without rebate for $200 didn't hurt. I decided to try one.

I've been very happy with my purchase. So far this thing hasn't let me down. It plays every DVD movie I stick in it. It even plays an (ahem) import copy of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" without the skipping problems my buddy was having on his RCA 5220.
I'd like to comment on the soft picture issue. I ran this thing head to head with my buddy's RCA 5220 on a 27" Samsung model 2768 via S-video. The picture was slightly softer on the sony than on the RCA. I then ran it head to head with my fathers panasonic DVD player on his Toshiba 27A40 via component video. We couldn't notice a difference, tho on a 27" with the time it took to swap... who knows. My point is the picture isn't fuzzy as many have claimed.
If you're using an s-video connection and your picture is very soft, try upgrading your cable. S-video cables achieve better picture quality by seperating the chrominance and luminance portions of the video signal. But then packages then into one small cable instead of using seperate cables the way component conections due. It is possible poor picture quality could be caused by inadequate shielding INSIDE the s-video cable. If anyone has any opinions on this please feel free to share, my email is sage11x@earthlink.net.
Anyway, the Sony is great. You'll want to buy a seperate CD player if you plan on listening to music. $100 will get you a nice sony 5-disc with peak search (if you're like me and still make tapes). My only other gripe is the slight whine it makes early in play. Originally I had the unit behind glass doors in the bottom of my cabinet, didn't hear a thing. But my reciever is down there too and things were getting a little warm so I decided to place it on the shelf above my tv where its open. Much better besides the whine. Oh well, I'll take that over the jet noises I've heard some others make. Hi Jeff. :)

You won't go wrong with this player.
