Strength:

Good basic features, fast

Weakness:

picture too soft

Well, I was bit by the dreaded Panasonic pickup bug and decided to try the Sony 360 out as a replacement. The unit is nicely built and very thin. It also had all of the features I wanted except the ability to play CD-R/RWs (my receiver decodes AC-3 and DTS, so all I need is optical out). The menus seemed faster than the A110's menus and the unit just seemed quicker to respond. I use a universal remote so I didn't really bother to judge the remote that cam with the player (although I did notice that the 360 uses two pairs of buttons for slow-mo and fast-mo, something that the Panasonic got away with by only using one pair of buttons). However, I did return the 360 because the picture was noticbly less sharp than the A110s (I use s-video, for both the A110 and the 360). My wife even noticed it. This unit would be good for a new user, but one who has experience with a player with a nice, sharp picture will be disappointed. Also, although less important, my wife didn't like the look of the menus, she thought they were ugly - but most people don't care about such things. :)

Strength:

Picture, price, & quality.

Weakness:

Doesn't play CD-R CDs. (OK if you have a seperate CD player)

When deciding to purchase a DVD player, I did my research. I used this site, as well as others, to narrow down my choices to a more managable number to select from.

I have not heard any noise from the player as others have commented on. The picture quality is excellent. I recently updated my old 25" Zentih to a Sony WEGA, so I may still be in awe of the picture quality from that alone. The player and remote work nicely and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

My only complaint, or rather peeve, with the S360 is the fact that you have to press after each number if you want to go to a double digit scene (i.e. to get to scene 28, you must hit 4 keys(<2> <8> ).

I am very pleasd with this purchase and for the price, you can't go wrong. Why invest in a super expenseive DVD player when the as soon as the technology changes, you can buy that one for half price? The picture is awesome, so I am not sure how much better it can get.

One question: I have a few Sony products and I was wondering why there is no S-Link on this product?

SETUP*
Reciever: Sony STR945
DVD Player: Sony S360 (obviously)
Speakers: Bose/Infinity combo (will be upgraded to Energy Take-5 soon)
TV: Sony WEGA

* I am not a Sony fanatic by any means, it is just a coincidence that I have so many Sony products. I researched each componenet and chose it based on the price/performance and not on the name. Although, in hindsight, I am noticing a trend.

I used this product occasionally for 3 months. Then I experienced problems with one DVD not being read (Error C13) then the unit stopped working with error No Disc Inserted. The unit was dead after that. Seems similar problem to other reported.

I took back to Sears who refunded my money. Really good service.

I got my DVP-S360 back from the SONY repair center... The problem has moved but it didn't fix it! Luckily, they agreed to fix it for free even if my waranty was over. It would have cost me ~200$ Canadian (optical module + a fuse).

I had doubts about the firmware (software if you prefer) part of this player. Now, after the symptoms I see, I'm even more convinced it's not that much of a hardware problem than a firmware bug. It looks like when you put in a CD that is hard for the player to read, it triggers some bug in the machine's firmware that causes it to write eroneous setting values to its EPROM non-volatile memory. This could cause situation such as a laser beam focus completely off limits. Ence, you can't read anything anymore.

Once this process is done, you are basically staring at a dead player. I'd be curious to see if you can simply reset any non-volatile memory and see if it boots up again after.

I'm taking the player back a second time since they waranty their fix for 90 days... Now, I'm at the point to ask them to give me any new SONY player that will be more reliable if they can't fix this one.

I'm bringing them all your comments so they can see for themselves the magnitude of this problem.

..It's not over yet!

Add me to the list of victims of DVP-S360 "No Disk" failure. I gave my DVD player for repairs last Saturday but after reading this discussion, I have cancelled my repair request..

Has anyone tried to contact BBB or consumer forum and complained about the product failure in so many cases?

Strength:

I got the thing for 125 bucks. smooth picture.

Weakness:

It's noisy as hell.

I picked this thing up for 125 bucks as a returned item at sears. It took me about 2 min to get the thing hooked up and running. The picture has yet to freeze and the fast forward works very well. I've come accross one problem, the thing can be noisy as hell. I'll be watching a movie and then the thing just starts making noise. It's not too bad. i just crank up the volume and it disappears. since i paid so little, i'm not gonna complain too much.

Strength:

Crisp Video, Easy to use, good remote

Weakness:

Waiting to find one

I simultaneously got a s360 dvd player and a toshiba 36A50 so my home theater has made rampant improvements later. I doubt i will ever go to the theater again. The component cable was 70 bucks but it creates a picture that is incredible. This DVD player seems to have all the capabilities one needs with a digital reciever. I have not heard any of the transport noise that people talk about. All in all a nice component that hopefully will work well for a while.

My Set Up:
Toshiba 36A50 <---sweet
Sony STRDE635
Sony DVPS360
Center - JBL Scenter
Fronts- JBL S-38
Sub - JBL 10"
Surround - Technics 3way
Need- JBL S312
