I THINK 'RUSH JOB' WERE THE BEST WORDS DESCRIBING THIS PANASONIC OFFERING. THEY WANTED SO MANY PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET RIGHT NOW THAT THEY SPREAD THEMSELVES TOO THIN AND CAME OUT WITH A PRODUCT THAT ACTS, LOOKS AND SOUNDS 'FIRST OR SECOND GENERATION' AT BEST. BY THE 4TH GENERATION, WE SHOULD EXPECT BETTER. BOB.

The Sony DVD changers are better than the Panasonic? NO way--and no thanks. All of their current DVD players have audio synch problems of some sort. The Panasonic C220 has the same picture and sound quality as their single disc version the A120--I should know since I own both. Needless to say both are VERY good. I have also not ever experienced a single synch problem with either the A120 or C220 models. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but needlessly bashing the Panasonic for non existant problems with the picture and sound quality is totally absurd...

No the picture and sound are not bad, but nothing special for a fourth-generation player. But small idiosyncrasies like a drawer than does not close by pressing on it, the lights issue and the display make this one to pass by.

Randy M, thanks for the heads up. I got my Pannasonic DVD-C220 at Target in late July. The price was right but I expected more from a new generation player. I have until late October to take it back. Hope the Sony you mentioned is in stores by then.

Matthew,
I can't see how people can be more specific about why this product is a disaster. Bad design, substandard picture, and substandard sound. And the "LIGHTS" issue is a big one because it shows that someone down at Panasonic is just not paying attention. Otherwise this product would not have been released. Do yourself a favor and take it back. I did.

Strength:

Clean, high-quality video and audio. No sync problems or noticable artifacts.

Weakness:

Crummy 'UFO' lights, bad on-screen menus.

This is a good unit for the money if you can live with its limitations. I am not wild about the looks of the unit, especially the BRIGHT lights (modelled after a landing UFO?). The on-screen menus are almost useless. You have virtually no visual control over the disks. The remote is also pretty limited. Luckily I have a Pronto so the remote is not that big an issue. I nearly returned the unit and bought the Toshiba 4109 because it holds an extra disk and has a better on-screen menu feature, but I read that it makes audible clicking sounds while playing. I listen to alot of classical, so clicking sounds during quite spots would not be cool at all. I also thought about buying the Sony 650, but I am not willing to shell-out $200 extra bucks just to have an on-screen text read-out of the disks in the player.
The bottom-line for me is that this unit produces excellent audio and video output. You can spend more money and get a few extra features, but the quality of the output won't be any better (and possibly worse). If you are interested in high-quality output and can live with the quirks--this unit is a winner.

Strength:

Price, picture, sound

Weakness:

The disc exchange feature is unusual. It just took some getting used to.

I don't get all the harsh reviews. This is my first DVD player, so maybe my expectations aren't as high as everyone elses. I like it just fine. The remote isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. The picure is terrific and so is the sound. In fact, the sound is immensely better than any of my previous CD players. I don't really care about looks, but it's not as bad as most here make it sound. Mine doesn't skip and it plays back most CD-R's I've tried. I know it's docs say it doesn't, but it does. At least mine does. No real complaints, except the usual "getting used to it" sort of things.

Strength:

5-disc changer, DTS

Weakness:

small remote

I have owned another Panasonic (A110) and compare this to that pretty closely. The only complaint I have of this one is that it doesn't show the little speaker diagram if you are in 5.1 mode or 2.0 that the previous model did.
