Strength:

Nice sharp picture!

I've had my Panny A110 for over a year now, and I haven't really had any of the major problems that other owners have reported. I think it's a great player...very crisp, clear picture and excellent sound. I also find the remote is easy to use. I'm very pleased with the A110, and would highly recommend it.

Strength:

When new, it was perfect picture/sound

Weakness:

Freezing, pixelation

After reading ALL these irate A110 users stories, I caled Panasonic and have been issued a case #.

I went through the same issues trying to get to the bottom of the issue.

What's ironic, is I bought this to replace a Technic CD player I purchased in 1984 ! And this one lasts less than 2 years !

Strength:

Ease of use, price, nice picture

Weakness:

Some pixelation problems, reliability, needs more bells and whistles

I bought this baby back in 1998 when DVD started getting popular. I read all the reviews and checked the home theater usenet boards to see what was the best value out there. The consensus was the Panasonic A110. It was relatively cheapter than the other brands, plus it was one of the few models at the time to have DTS. After doing my research, I went to my local Good Guys and found out there was a 3-month waiting list! "Boy!", I must have thought, "This must be one popular machine!". So I signed up on the waiting list thinking I was going to get a great machine.

The first several months I had it it was great. No picture problems or anything, sound was fine, and it was really easy to navigate. Then I dramatically increased my DVD collection and noticed some subtle differences. Occassionally it would skip chapters in certain DVDs (like in the Matrix when Neo travels to see the Oracle), or I would get pixelation/artifacting problems (Austin Powers 2, the Moon Base Scene). Also, it didn't handle layer transfers that great. If it's one drawback I hate about DVDs it's the layer transfer. Kinda ruins your enjoyment when there's a full one to two second pause in the action.

Overall, this player has been adequate for my needs, despite the problems mentioned above. And I watch alot of DVDs. I will probably upgrade in a few more years since I have built up a more advanced set of components around it. There's probably much better models out there so if you get this puppy for under $100 you got a good deal.

Alot.

Lets jus say this, DO NOT AND I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY THIS DVD PLAYER!!!!! I'm not the one who bought this, but my dad did for our family. At first, this DVD player was good. Over all, a good picture and sound quality.

For the past few months, there have been alot of problems that have been showing up in our unit. Such as when I try to watch The Matrix, the movie freezes up during the scene when Neo battles with Morphius. (my favorite scene besides the lobby shoot out) Then of course, there is always internal noises that have been showing up also. Like a rattleing sound that i can hear when we watch the movie, the unit overheats too fast like in about an hour into the movie. It annoying!!!! Then, in every DVD movie i watch, there always has to be blocks that show up. Always!!! Then the sound starts to go and then, we have to start the movie all the way over again.

As i said before, do not buy this DVD player. It sucks. Actually worse then sucks. If There was a negative rating system in here, i'd give it a -5 stars.

Strength:

Great when it worked!

Weakness:

Failes after a year and a half!

What can I say that already has not been said. It worked great for about a year and a half , then started pixilating
and freezing. Took it to Flanners Audio for repair but they had to send it to Panisonic's service center. Came back with a 200.00 estimate to replace the Laser mechanism.
Forget it! I went out and bought a Nakamichi DVD10s and will NEVER buy Panasonic again!!

I bought this unit Christmas of 98. After the first few dvds, it started pixelate within 20 minutes of the movie. I brought it back and they replaced it with an identical unit. This one worked fine...for about a year when again, after about 40 minutes, it started pixelate. I mean serious degradation of the movie until it simply stopped. CDs also skipped. Brought the unit back again. Was told no matter what the problem was, it would only cost $39 to fix. Mind you, I had already dropped $20 on some bogus laser cleaning kit (didn't work). Circuit City called within a week to tell me it was going to be AN ADDITIONAL $289 to fix. I told them to f*ck off, made them return the broken unit (still haven received it) and made them credit me the $39 (ditto).
Additionally, a rice cooker i bought from National (same parent company) broke within 6 months. I will never buy panasonic products again.

Strength:

When it works, great picture and sound. Lots of features for the money.

Weakness:

It's in the shop. Can't read some discs due to formatting error. Panasonic is fixing it, but I'm disappointed.

Overall, I was very pleased with the unit while it worked. Great sound and picture. I've had it for about 1 year. Then, I noticed that it wouldn't read some discs, and over-spin them trying to read it.

The unit is now in the shop being repaired. Panasonic did give me a voucher for labor, otherwise it would have been about $90.00 as the labor warranty expired. They told me they had to order a "New Board", which to me means there is a hardware/imbedded software glitch. I hope this fixes it.

I have to give a cautionary 3 star rating, because you may have to fix the unit to repair what I think is a design defect. If I had to, I'd buy a more recent unit to take advantage of newer hardware.

Have found no fault with this product.

I bought this a110 from the states 2 years ago via mail order and have found this machine a great buy.Because this dvd is a region 1,I had this machine chipped to play region 2 the uk format.
This has now given me more choice with no problems that the other reviewers have noticed.

Strength:

Great picture, great sound

Weakness:

Locks up, horrid pixelization, totally unusable after 10 minutes.

I have the SAME problems as half the people on this board. Has anyone considered a class action lawsuit against panasonic to get our money back or get these things fixed for free? This is totally unacceptable. I was about to drop $1200 on the new panasonic portable dvd but this recent lack of caring from panasonic has made me seriously reconsider that purchase. Lawsuit anyone?

Too big to be a paperweight.
Won't float

2 weeks ago I would have said that this was a pretty good DVD player. But I am now going through the $200 "NO Disc" error fix. I refuse to pay to have this unit fixed, if I am going to spend $200 on repairs, why not buy a new player manufactured by a company that will stand by its products. I will try the Vaseline fix, and hope that works, but from what I have read, if it does work, this one is going to the bedroom. Too bad, I thought Panasonic was better than this. I have had their VCR for over 5 years, and it still works great. This will be the last Panasonic I ever buy!
