Strength:

At first I was impressed with all features, including the
$499.00 price tag, for what I was getting. Or so I thought!

Weakness:

There were no weakness for 13 whole months. Gee, does this sound like a broken record?

Well, it looks as though Panasonic doesn't really want alot of our business any longer. Although, it probably won't do any good to boycott Panasonic products. What most of the public doesn't know, is Panasonic, Technics, Quasar and probably more are all units of Matsushieta Electric Corp. of America.
I just recieved a call from the repair technician today. After diagnosing my A110 DVD player, the est. is $225.00 for the laser optics plus $125.00 labor. Panasonic was so grateful of me, they sent a letter stating they would cover the cost of diagnostics only. Panasonic will pay $25.00 of the $350.00 repair bill.
I think I'll do what most everyone else is doing. Anybody need a boat anchore? The technician recommended a Pioneer!
The technician also said that Panasonic, Toshiba and Phillips are pretty much the same machines.
I'd really like to rate this at .00001!!!

Strength:

Does both DD & DTS.

Weakness:

manual.
no component output.
Can not produce below black level.

I have had and still have this unit since its introduction into the market. I can find no major faults with this unit.
I have had it skip a chapter once and only once(Wild Wild West). I have never seen pixelization, the no disc error, or anything else stated within the past reviews of this player. I have 200+ dvd's and only once did I have a problem. This is a fantastic DVD player. The picture it puts out (I use S-VHS) is great for a $300-$400 player. The audio (I use Coaxial) is even better! The remote is easy to use. My only suggestion for the remote is that it be backlit. The remote activates the players options/menus very fast. Faster than my DVL-909 (Current LD player). Setup is easy, even easier without the manual (the manual needs a better layout design). This is a great unit for a medium entry player.
Panasonic is not to be overlooked when purchasing a DVD player!

Strength:

For 15 months - good picture, good FF/REW scanning

Weakness:

After 15 months is doesn't work, bad remote

As many others here and elsewhere have said, the machine worked great until it was 3 months out of warranty. Because of the great service that I have received from Panasonic, I now have a Pioneer.

Pixilation / Freezing at layer change.

Owned for a year and a half. Freezes up on dual layer discs at the layer change. Gave up and trashed it for a Toshiba after Panasonic said it would be $400 to fix (out of warranty).

Basically paid $400 to be a guinee pig.

Panasonic still refuses to accept that this model has issues. Ironically I was in Target last week and saw the new model Panasonic freezing up on Ghostbusters in the store on all the TV's at once. Don't buy Panasonic DVD.

Strength:

Great Picture, 5.1 Ch, Easy to use

Weakness:

Living on borrowed time?

I've had mine for two years with only an occasional episode of pixelation but it's always been on a rental and I've found a scratch, dirt, cat hair, etc. I've played it 30 or more hours since the last incident with no problems. Never had a problem with music CDs.

Other than that, nothing. I use mine 8-10 hrs a week (800-1000 hours total so far). I did apply some grease to the rails as recommended.

I can't really say anything negative. (Keeping my fingers crossed but looking for a good deal in the meantime.)

Strength:

Good picture, audio, intelligent menus

Weakness:

Completely and utterly unreliable; terrible customer service from Panasonic

Have had mine since late 1998. It has been in the Panasonic repair shop twice during that time for a failed optical pickup. The first time was under warranty, but the second time it was not. I managed to "negotiate" the second repair to $45 labor, and no charge for parts. By "negotiate," I mean making a huge stink in front of other customers and demanding to speak to the service manager. Fortunately, I live 10 miles away from the regional repair center. Turnaround was 5 business days. The repair technician in the Hollywood, Florida center admitted to me when I went to pick up the unit the second time that she has a huge supply of optical pickup units because the A110 fails so often for this reason (a/k/a as the "No Disc curse").

If Panasonic has told you that they are unaware of problem with this unit, they are lying.

Hopefully the unit will not fail a third time before progressive scan DVD-A units are reasonably priced.

Locks up and Pixelates.

I was given this A-110 by my audiophile brother. I thought wow, what a great guy. I've spent $75.00 to get it running.
No luck. I feel sorry for you guys who spent $400 and got burned. I'm only out $75.

Strength:

Great picture and sound initially

Weakness:

Like everyone else...it is now a useless POS

Bought this unit in December of 1998. It worked fantastic (except for the occasional layer change glitch, dirty disc isssues) until this November. Then, wouldn't you know...it can't even read a friggin' disc. 'No Disc' when there clearly is a disc inside.

I thought that the optical pick-up might have been dirty, so I bought a cleaning kit...completely useless. Like others around here, if you asked me in October about this unit, I would have highly recommended it. But now that I realize that the A110 is plagued with shoddy craftsmanship, I feel the same might happen with the any other Panasonic product. Therefore, Panasonic is the first person on my a/v equipment manufacturer "black list".

All my other equipment is SONY and not once have I had a problem with any of it. Panasonic better wake up...they just lost another customer. SONY (and maybe ONKYO) just gained more of my business. This is not a good way for Panasonic to gain market share from the biggest and IMO one of the best, SONY.

And for the clowns around here that mention that we should have all bought extended warranties...this product is the first time I would have ever needed to use one. And you even have the audacity to rate the equipment 5 stars...you are actually rating the warranty. Wake-up buddy, even you said you unit had to be replaced once already. Panasonic sucks!

Strength:

you can tell your friends you have a dvd player

Weakness:

i think you already know

I am so glad I came across this site. Just started to look for tech support but found something more valuable: moral support. It makes me feel so good to hear that others have had the same problems. PanOSonic A-110 is the first DVD player I have owned and it has been a long frustrating road. The next player I own will not be PanOSonic.

Started out great....???

Weakness:

ended up a piece of cr*p!!

Cant believe it!! Had problems with pixelation, thought it was the discs...then got the "no disc" error. Then found this website. Disgusted by the amount of people having this problem. I almost seem lucky that mine lasted 2 years. Bought it 12/30/98....died 1/8/01. Should not have required an extended warranty plan. If I knew it would have lasted only the 1 yr 90 days, I would have NEVER bought it. I have had other electronic/audio equipment last for years....though strangely none of them have been Panasonic. I will never buy Panasonic again. It almost seems pointless to try and get it fixed or complain.....I guess all we can do is spread the word that Panasonic sucks and blows!!

So what player do I buy now?......
