Strength:

Very inexpensive, easy to set up, can play VCDs, SVCDs and and CD-RWs (silver bottom type).

Weakness:

No front panel display, remote is rather sparce, no s-video out.

After reading the reviews here, I get the impression that almost everyone has gotten a buggy player. So, I thought I'd add my two cents to the mix. I, the POOR college student that I am, bought this on sale at Best Buy. It was $99 with a $30 rebate. I was pretty desperate for a DVD player, and $69 seemed like the best I was ever going to do, unless one considers a DVD-ROM drive/MPEG card combo. I'll admit it certainly wasn't the most feature-laden DVD player one could buy, but all I wanted was something that played DVDs. Thus far, I have not been disappointed. I've owned this player since 12/2000. There has not been a DVD this player won't play. There is one DVD it has a problem with if you access a certain menu, but I suspect that it is the fault of the DVD, not the player. DVDs are known to have defects in them too. To address certain issues, I've never had to unplug the player to reset it. I've never had lock-up issues if the DVD had been in the player for a long time. The video and audio are always in sync. It plays music CDs just fine, and as an added bonus, it can play VCDs and SVCDS. It will play CD-Rs, but rather randomly. It can play with moderate success silver bottom CD-RWs. Don't believe me? Direct your browser to http://www.vcdhelp.com.

In the negative category, this DVD player doesn't have the features of other more expensive models. But what do you expect for $69? The front panel only has three LEDs: one for power/standby, one to show the player in use and one that indicates IR signals. It also has a play button, ff/rew buttons, slow ff/rew buttons, menu and on-screen display buttons. There is no s-video out, but unless you have more expensive TVs or VCRs, the option really does you no good. At least it comes with the A/V cables, and batteries for the small, yet functional, remote control.

Overall, for what I paid, this player was an excellent deal. I use it almost every day, and if it happens to die in the near future, I wasn't out that much money, so I won't feel too bad about buying another player. I'm sorry for all of you who had a bad experience with the DVD100.

Strength:

Clear picture, affordable price

Weakness:

Sound is out of sync

This DVD is very easy to hook up and use. It provides a clean, crisp picture. Unfortunately, the sound is out of sync, rendering this DVD player quite frustrating to use.
I have also used a friend's Sony 330 DVD player that had no problems playing disks that this Oritron DVD player had trouble with. All in all, I do not recommend this DVD player because of it's sound sync problems.

Strength:

price, image quality, weight

Weakness:

bad remote, no optical audio out and no s-video hook up

DVD players are very popular these days because they have such great image quality and amazing sound. but the problem that always comes up is "how much are they"? well DVD players can get very expensive, but now there's a cure for that. the Oritron Ruby-100 can solve all of those money problems when trying to find a cheap DVD player. i purchased this player at Wal-mart for only $200 (Canadian)and i also bought Toy Story 2 along with it. I brought it home, and hooked it up (the connection was very simple). so i cranked the volume on my surround system, sat back and relaxed. While i was watching Toy Story 2 i noticed nothing but the clearness of the picture and sound. i was very, very impressed by this $200 DVD player. So after my first full DVD experience i was very impressed. As the days passed i borrowed a couple DVD's from my friends (Starship Troopers and The Matrix). I put Starship Troopers into the Oritron and noticed, yet again nothing but brilliant picture and sound. But, the problems arrived when i watched the Matrix, suddenly the picture occasionally turned black causing us to mess around with the cables and then pause the movie to get it back to normal. that's not all, when we skipped chapters on this player when we got the chapter desired, the sound was out of sync, but this wasn't that bad, because we discovered the oritron did this because of it's super quick speed when changing chapters. other than those two problems, nothing else went wrong with the player. I even compared this player to the Toshiba Sd-1200 (which has s-video). and it turned out that the image quality was a lot clearer than the model $100 more expensive. Also, the remote was kind of bad, it was small and had very few buttons on it. Other than the picture messing up once in awhile, the sound going out of sync and the bad remote this player is very good because of it's price and the fact that it's a DVD player, not VHS.

so if you're a first time buyer of a DVD and don't want to spend a lot of money i suggest you go get the Oritron.

Strength:

Price, Reliable, Easy to Use for First Timers

Weakness:

None I've Seen

I felt I had to post about this since there are so many negative posts on this product. This DVD player is cheap, reliable, and easy to use. I've only had one problem with mine and that was fixed by unplugging it and then plugging it back in. This DVD player is easy to take around too. The audio and video are good. The player can't play CD-Rs but it's not a $500 player. I suggest to anyone that they try this out. It's a good buy.

Strength:

It works...for about six months

Weakness:

just about everything else

What a piece of crap! I got it thinking it was a good deal, and instead, about six months later, it breaks down, doesnt go into the loading screen, and almost eats my Fight Club dvd. I callled up technincal assistance, who said they wouldnt repair it, but they would replace it, for $75. No thanks.

Strength:

If you aren't intent on actually watching the movie, it works fine.

Weakness:

Pretty much everything from the first papercut I received while opening the box.

I bought it in May, eager to experience the whole DVD craze. The first 3 times I used the (expletive deleted), it worked wonderfully. I accepted the occasional sticking of the drawer as one of those little quirky traits common with animals and household appliances. Then I made the mistake of renting 'Coyote Ugly'. The next day when I tried to watch another movie, these horrific green blotches started appearing all over the place! I tried 4 other discs, and various cleaning supplies, all to no avail, while frantically reading through the owner's manual searching for something that could be remotely translated into English. Unfortunately, all of this happened about 2 months after I had bought it, and by the time I finally got around to examining the problem, it was well past the warranty deadline. Finally, I solved the problem forever (and relieved much stress at the same time!) by taking it outside and making my own little pyrotechnic display with the creative placement of fireworks! Hence the 2 star overall rating - it was soo much fun blowing the (insert adjective) thing up. :)

Everything

My sister bought this DVD Player at Meijer For $100.00 I was kind of skeptical about it. I have had many problems with it since the day I bought it.

1. Several times the audio is extremly low, you have to turn the volume on the Television up all the way just to get some volume out of it. Turning it off and then back on after 15 minutes of play seems to fix that.

2. On one of my DVDs, when going into the Language selection screen, it just kicks me back out to the main screen, so I cannot change the language, subtitles etc. I have to use the players interal menu to do that.

3. Several times when using subtitles, the subtitles would become scrambled and impossible to read. Often watching DVDs with subtitles turned off would produce yellow and green lines on the screen.

4. Disc Trap - Also quite often the player refuses to give my DVD back to me. I've noticed if you disconnect the video cable it seems to make the unit wotk again.

5. VCDs - "Wrong or Bad Disc" when I try to play CD-R VCD Discs. After opening the player up and manually re-aligning the laser unit seems to have fixed a few of the problems, but I still think it is the worst DVD Player I have ever seen.

Weakness:

Many programming defects

I have used this DVD player for 2 years and from the day I purchased it, it was defective. At first, I thought it was because of dirty DVDs, etc. but after reading some of the earlier reviews, I now know it was the Oritron DVD player.

- problems with volume, sometimes it is so low even with the control set to max you can't hear it without straining.

- it will not respond to controls, its programming goes haywire and stays locked up for 20-30 minutes. Sometimes, the only way to get it unlocked is to disconnect it from the power source.

- it refuses to play some DVDs, the most recent I have found is the 2nd DVD of Hannibal, I have tried 3 different disks.

- the video is distorted when the screen has mostly white or very light picture.

I would stay away from this product unless it is free, even then it may be too frustrating to put up with.

Strength:

It taught me to never buy electronics from a company I had never heard of.

Weakness:

In addition to not working after 5 months, it destroyed 2 of my DVD's.

*****DO NOT BUY OR YOU WILL BE SORRY*********

This DVD player worked just long enough for the warranty to run out. In addition to the common problems that other reviewers have mentioned, my player also started destroying discs before it finally gave up the ghost. I tried to play 2 discs, but didn't realize until I had played the second disc that it was making a large groove in the discs that it pathetically tried to play.
