OK, it died today. The player doesn't recognize the disc anymore. I used to have to reset the player in the middle of a movie, after it pixelated to a point it locked up, but now it stopped detecting the DVD. Crap... Better look for a new player.

this unit went through a lot of use for about a year without any problems. Then just this weekend it started freezing, locking up, and not reading any DVD's I put in it.. going to try to move it to a different location... also placing a fan on it. I think the unit runs to hot for it componets if it dont work not going to buy any JVC products again... all in all it was a great piece...

I work in the entertainment industry and recalled my first experience with DVD. It was for a trade show project for Panasonic and we were had to shoot this thing when a working DVD wasn't even available (Nice model, though - LOL) So several years later - I'm in.. I grabbed one for my girlfriend for her birthday - Panasonic 120 at Best Buy for around 350-ish, (Hadn't even been to ubid yet!!) and fell in love, the first system we set up is for her living room, mid priced (400) Yamaha and that killer JBL 6 speaker surround system turned out to be a nice package for about 1100 bucks out the door. The system rocks and watching 6 Days/ 7 Nights was super. (weak movie, though - IMHO) nice locations, and sound mix, too. So (yeah, this is long winded, I know) I grabbed one (panasonic a120) for me on bid.com for 200.00 plus shipping, but on my TV at home, I'm noticing some digitization / pixilation on the 120 - not sure why - I'll have to trouble shoot that some other time - could be the unit, and I use that through a JBL Simply Cinema 550 (great for the bedroom - but only prologic) So WHILE I was getting (bidding) on the Panasonic, I also had a bid on the JVC and sure enough, I won that one, too - I have to say, bang for the buck, this JVC rocks. I'm upgrading my living room system, and pretty much building it around this JVC and my Cerwin Vega 15" speakers. Rear surround are Advents and the reciever was one of the first ProLogic from Pioneer.. my quandary is do I get the JVC reciever (10-something) so I only have to use ONE remote - LOL (VHS is JVC, too, along with Monitor) or do I go for the Yamaha. Regardless - the picture's terrific and I CAN see a difference between the panasonic and the JVC - Much better on the JVC, (But again, this could be a defective Panasonic) can ya tell I've had too much coffee?!?!? LOL
I got this for about 360 at ubid and it was new - The Good Guys had it for 490 or something like that and wouldn't budge.. I'm happy - I'd recommend it highly -
Okay - I'm off to some other online store to find that receiver! Thanks to Audioreview for a great site, too!

Strength:

Good feature set and picture quality for price

Weakness:

Cheezy remote.

This is really a follow-up review. I had the product for a year and noticed what I thought were problems with the DTS. After up-grading to the Harman Kardon DVD5, I discovered it was my receiver(HK AVR300), NOT the JVC DVD player.

Compared to the HK DVD5, the JVC doesn't sound nearly as good and the picture isn't as nice either (more jaggies), but the JVC has a decent picture and an excellent feature set for the price

Strength:

like I said befor great picture and good sound

Weakness:

dam thing locks ups

This is a follow up from my previous review. Hello all, I am submiting this because I think it might be a posible solution to the problem that we been expriencing with the JVC KV DR701BK. Did some tweaking with this thing and I found out that if you remove the top cover you wlll see that the processing board sits right on top of the laser. And on top of the board there are to ribbon cables. this is what I did, with the DVD off not plug in... I pulled out both ribbon cables from there connectors.. then I plug the unit back in (gave it power) while still having both the ribbons off...Then I reinserted the ribbons cables back on the connectors (DO NOT DISCONNECT THE UNIT WHEN DOING THIS LEAVE POWER ON GOING TO THE UNIT)THE unit has been working ever since I also gave the unit a good work out still going strong.. Please let me if this worked for anyone else good luck. ps there is a big enough space between the processing board and the back of the unit to place a fan to contrtol the heat...

Picture Quality and setup features (when it works)

Weakness:

Skips, Lockups, won't play DTS recordings, overall reliability

This player is a piece of trash. Like many of the other reviews I have read here and in the DVD newsgroup this player is unreliable. I now have to do an eprom reset every time I watch a DVD. I can't use any of the special effects, it causees skips and lock ups and pixelization and it's back to square one...eprom reset. I wish I had my money back

Strength:

It's made from metal and Plastic

Weakness:

It hasn't worked well since purchased and quit working after the Warranty expired

Followup review.... after finding out I could get this one repaired for about the same price I could buy a new one of he same model, I purchased the Onkyo DV-C601...The Onkyo is an OUSTANDING machine with audio and video performance a head and shoulders above this JVC junk. JVC care nothing about repairing hundreds of machines they know have an inherent manufacturing defect. Even if you bought one that hasn't had a problem, you will probably experience the JVC cold shoulder if you ever have a problem... Good Luck...
Check out the reviews for the Onkyos on this sight....For the price.. they are incredible performers

All in all, I really like this player. The sound, picture, and features are all there for a good price. It took me a while to get used to the Resume button. Stop sends you back to the beginning of a disc, but Resume or Power save your spot in the movie. Also, the 2 speaker setting assumes you have a left, right, and a subwoofer. I used the expert setting to configure the player for just left and right speakers.
