Strength:

Great Picture, Great Sound

Weakness:

The worst remote around. The Player will not play certain dvd's. Then it locks up and will not play any dvd's at all. I have gone through 3 players. JVC was no help and Circuit City was no help either. They would no admit to a real problem. I will never buy at Circuit City or buy another JVC item. I finally bought a Toshiba 3109 at a different dealer and have had no poblems. BEWARE STAY AWAY FROM THIS DVD PLAYER AND CIRCUIT CITY !!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the remote joystick can be more responsive, and the dimmer function should be done with a button on the remote and front panel, rather than a few layers down in the menu, but this unit is a 5 for its quality, feature and price.
Too bad it doesn't come with any free movies like the other JVC model.

After my terrible bout with the Panasonic A310, I decided to buy this JVC machine. What a great improvement! The picture has been sharp, the sound is great. Most importantly, it has been reliable. I put a DVD in (yes, the tray is relatively slow, but c'mon already), and it plays without a hitch. Has built in DTS, and in my opinion, a great machine for the $$$.

Great machine and I must correct last two reviews on aspects of this player. First, you can dim the display. Go to the set-up preferences and navigate to the "screen saver" options. Select option #3 and the display will be dimmed.Secondly, you can play DVD's with Dolby Surround 2.0. The program will simply be output on the front left and front right channels. Many DVD's have both 5.1 and 2.0 and I have played them both ways.

The reason I gave this unit only three stars is because that it does not seem very well thought out. The only analog outputs that it has are the 5.1 outs. So if you are using it like me as your Dolby Digital decoder you won't be able to watch Dolby Pro-Logic DVDs. I also don't like their "GUI" that makes many functions confusing. Sound and picture seem pretty good, however.
I am also not really keen on the remote. I have been having problems getting the enter key to work properly. Many times it takes 4 or 5 presses to get the unit to recognize the enter key.

This is a great machine. I bought a Toshiba 2109, but just hated it. It looked like it came from K-mart or something just cheap looking. ANd the layer change was long, remote sucked.anyway, I love this JVC 701, the joystick enter takes some getting used to, but I noticed if you hold it down for a second, it will always work, instead of just a quick click. Sound is awesome, picture is very sharp. I like that you can edit all the settings manually. Sometimes, things are hard to find, but with time, you will know it inside out. Optical and Coaxial outputs, very nice looking unit. One thing that is missing tho, dimmer for the front panel. It is very bright at night.

Strength:

Great sound, can adjust the player for speaker system

Weakness:

Freeze ups, Too Hot...it finally died after 18 months

I purchased this DVD Player because of its specs. It always was a little flakey. Some DVDs would have dificulty playing, some you could not access the menu. But the sound was great. I won't be buying another JVC player. I do have a JVC 32 inch TV and it have been flawless. I wonder if the JVC engineers reads this stuff..they should.

Strength:

Nice picture, decent sound quality and nice looking.

Weakness:

Doesn't play some DVD's

I must have been lucky with mine. I have only had 2 problems with mine since I have owned it. It would not play "Dinasuars" or "Armageddon". Other than that this unit has worked flawlesly for me! I own around 30 DVD's and have rented probably another 20-30 DVD's without any problems playing them (other than those 2). In fact I like the picture better than the Sony 560 model. I am actually selling mine and buying a progressive DVD for the HDTV I am getting with my tax return!
