Strength:

The Price, Digital Optical Out, Nice Picture Quality

Weakness:

NO DTS, but DTS encode materials are still rare because it is not a standard for the DVD like DD is.

I got this player when I did not know much about the features of a dvd player (would've got one with DTS if I knew) The main appeal of this unit is the price, it is one of the cheapest dvd player out there. I used this for quite some times now, and it has worked perfectly so far, every dvd movie played without any problems, it even plays video cds great. This dvd player sure performed better than what I expected (so far). Looking at the other reviews I noticed that almost everyone either loved their GE or hated it to the bone, may be there were a bad patch? I think GE has a software update. In my opinion this is a very nice entry DVD player. If anyone wants a better DVD player get Toshiba or Sony...

Strength:

Cheap and very Reliable

Weakness:

Only laft and right stereo outputs.

Maybe Im one of the lucky ones but I recieved this as a present for Chirstmas last year and it has no problems whatsoever. It was a display model even and it has played every single DVD I put into it. I has played over 200+ movies since I have owned it and it keeps on like clockwork. I have seen the complaints so I cant say its the best out there, but I would buy another one if this ever died on me. I wish it had the 5.1 channel output though, that would have been my only wish. Sure it doesnt have "DTS" either, but "DTS" isnt anything to write home about. I have also heard that there are no PROM updates for this model either which is kind of dissapointing, but I have needed it so far either.. Need a cheap DVD player that works with every movie and has a nice search fast forward and rewind, pick up the GE 1105p!

Strength:

Good price, great video quality, play's CD's great, excellent deal (for me, at least), Optical output (great for my MD), and comes with SVideo Cable

Weakness:

Can't play CDR, very bad reputation, can have problems reading scratched discs (but usually only VERY scratched up), No DTS (but who cares?)

I've had this player for a while now, and to be honest I've had no real problems. Granted, it's only been a day, but I'll keep updating. Matrix, despite being heavily scratched (it's a rental) played pretty damn well, with some notciebale skips and jumps, but no audio dropouts. "Chasing Amy", my all-time favorite movie, was an unscratched disc and played flawlessly. I watched the movie, the outtakes, the trailer, and the audio commentary with very few breaks to turn the player off (it did get very hot, though), and the thing STILL performed great.
I think most people, when they get bad players, don't realize that the problem most likely is that the player needs a firmware upgrade. Granted, I haven't called customer service yet, to check if I would have to pay for an upgrade (though, just to say it, doing something like that is 1.Business suicide and 2.Makes you look like a cheap product manufacturer), but I doubt it, and really, that's all the player would need. Next I'm going to check ti with the Abyss (another problem prone movie, though I dont want to sit through the god forsaken film), Spawn (that's a good one), and, to really test it, what I hear to be THE most problem ridden disks, "Jaws" and "Independence Day". I'll update you in a week just to see if what everyone says is true, or if it all is just what I think it is: a need for firmware upgrades. I'll get one if I need it, but so far I see no reason.
But we shall soon see, won't we?

Strength:

Has alot of options built in , great price

Weakness:

Better make SURE the DVD you play is free of finger prints, scratches,or any kind of soiled surface otherwise you will not be happy with the skipping and delays in the movie you are watching.

I haven't run into any problems with mine yet.I just have to make sure the disk is clean,as with any kind of digital reading equipment you'd own. Keep it and the movies you put in clean and make sure you clean the laser eye as per the manufacture sugggests and you won't have any problems.I'm happy with mine.

Strength:

Nothing

Weakness:

Everything.

This was our first DVD player. When we first bought it we didn't watch many movies. It played great. Then as the months (2-3) went on we started noticing problems. Movies would either not start, or it would lock up during play. We thought it was dirty DVD movies and tried cleaning them, cleaning the player, etc. Then it got to the point it wouldn't play movies at all without the screen freezing up or it skipping through parts of the movie.
I e-mailed GE and Thomson Electronics. Since our warranty had expired, they were going to charge us $89 to fix it. We would have to mail ours to them and they would send us a refurbished one. One of the service people told me it was just because it was dirty and that there were no known flaws with the machine. I find this really hard to believe when they knew exactly what it was we were talking about when we called them and said they have experienced this problem before. For the price I payed plus the $89 they were going to charge me to fix it, I could have bought a decent machine that works from the very beginning.
No longer will I ever purchase another GE/Thomson Electronics product again. I suggest that you don't either. This machine is crap and not worth the problems you are going to experience not only with the machine but with their customer support people.

Strength:

With not know a whole lot about DVD plays them once and awhile just fine.

Weakness:

Doesn't play the movies when I want it to

Bought this unit not really knowing a whole lot about DVD's but an associate needed money so i bought it from them. Won't play some movies some of the time and will play them at any other time. Seems like its got a mind of its own on wether it will play them or not. Can't find any were on the net that will look at it or has information on it. The main GE sight doesn't even include DVD's that must say something. Ended up buying a JVC for $200 for the main room and moved this piece up to the kids room. For some reason it will always Toy Story and Toy Story2

Strength:

Able to watch most movies

Weakness:

Skipping, freezing, lagging, not able to expand the screen when the movie is for wide-screen tv's

My children bought this for me in May of 2000 and it seemed to play OK; however little by little the movies began to skip, freeze and lag. I began noticing it more on the Gladiator movie. The last straw was Scary Movie when it didn't get past the FBI warning. When I went to Best Buy I was told that there are newer "chips" and this particular model was missing it. I bought a Toshiba DVD and am happy with it. On a lark, I tried to find information on the warranty (I assumed there would be a year warranty) through general electric or Thomson Electronics..and could not find either. As a last resort I have sent an email to GE, but reading the reviews I am thinking this may be a lost cause. I will give the DVD Player to my son and enjoy the Toshiba. I don't think I will buy another GE product after this experience.

Strength:

Cheap, reliable, garden-variety DVD player. G.E. has become kind of a joke, thanks to David Letterman, but I was pleasantly surprised with this palyer.

Weakness:

No DTS. Freezes occasionally on "T2" (probably due to the amount of information compressed onto that particular DVD).

Has not let me down once. Doesn't play "Scary Movie"? What the heck are you doing with that sorry excuse for a comedy anyway? Maybe your player recognizes that it's garbage and refuses to play it. Any way, other than the "T2" problem, which is minor, I've had no problems with any other DVDs. That includes "The Matrix". Region coding and Macrovision are very simple to bypass, but I won't tell you how. I'm not going to jail for you! No DTS output, but I haven't upgraded to a DTS receiver yet. When I do, I will purchase the upgraded model of this DVD player, which does have DTS compatibility.

Strength:

Decent DVD Player for the price. (It is much cheaper now then whem I bought it around Thanksgiving, 1999.

Weakness:

Region coding and Macrovision (cannot be hooked up thru VCR to view DVD's, though this can be hacked.)

I've read the reviews posted on this forum, and I'm sorry for those of you who bought players which did not work. I have had this player since Thanksgiving, 1999, and I have had no problems playing any discs after connecting the player directly to my TV. However, I wanted to get the full stereo sound for my player, but because my TV is an older model, I was only able to get stereo sound by connecting the DVD player to my VCR. (I have a Panasonic 4-head hi-fi VCR.) When I attempted to play DVD's through the player, though, the picture became grossly distorted, though the sound was OK. I later found out that this player had Macrovision installed in it, so it would not allow anyone to copy DVD's to VHS tape. I had no interest in doing this, so I was quite pissed off. I was told that the only way I could connect the DVD player through my VCR to get the picture cleared was to buy an RF modulator.

By the way, I attempted to contact GE about the problems I had with my DVD player, but their website did not include any reference to their DVD player. I was just about ready to junk this player or sell it at a flea market when I was notified of a DVD technical site. It listed ways to disable Macrovision on your DVD player and also reprogram your player to be region free and play all DVD discs.

I found out that the GE 1105P DVD player is the exact same player as the Samsung DVD-709 player. I also found out that if you have any technical problems with the GE DVD player, you are better off going to Samsung for technical support. I have been told that they are very helpful and courteous, unlike technical support at GE or Thomson electronics.

Since I have gone to that site, I have been able to disable both the region coding and the Macrovision on the GE 1105P DVD player, and it has worked wonderfully for me. I was about to give this player a one-star rating at best until I went to the site to get directions to fix it. If you want to do the same for your own player, go to the following site for instructions:

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk./info/multiregion/full/thomson3300.asp

Once you make these adjustments, you should be verry happy with the GE 1105P. :-)
