Strength:

Price, setup

Weakness:

lacking in special effects, video control and stbility

Somewhat good, low price basic DVD player for people on a budget. However, you get what you pay for. This player does have an impressive picture which it should but has major problem with picture stability as I experienced skipping problems quite often. Sound is good with one optical output.
Gave this to my sister and bought a JVC DVD player and have had no problems with it. Some advise, spend the extra money and get a good unit.

Picture,no dts out

I bought this unit at Best Buy for $99 (open box)so I can't complain about the price. I bought this mostly to play cd's in my bedroom so it playing dvd's is an added bonus. So far I am pleased with this unit, no feezes, lip-sync or other problems. The picture seems very grainy but my tv only has a composite video connection. It has no problem loading discs like my sony does but it is a bare bones player with very little features. Bottom line, I would not buy this unit for your main system but for $99 it's great for building a cheap bedroom system.

Strength:

This machine does the basics, which is what I wanted. It was the lowest price I have seen for a DVD. It plays movies and entertains the family. Does nicely with the S-video input on my TV.

Weakness:

On one rental DVD, it skipped at a scratch on the DVD. Does not wash the dishes or vacuum the floor (but I did not expect it to either.)

DVDs are a very nice step forward in home movies. I wanted to stop the collection of movie tapes in the family and move on to today's technology. When the prices settle down in another year or two, this set may be replaced with a multi-featured set, with this model relegated to another location. But until then, I will be enjoying the fantastic picture and sound that DVD brings. This product has exceeded my expectations.

Strength:

Basic DVD player

Weakness:

Self destructed after 8 months

I bought this as a simple DVD player for occasional use. I played about 10 movies over 8 months. The unit will no longer accept any type of DVD or CD. The Laser and reader have been cleaned with a DVD cleaner disk with no result.

GE and Thompson don't even acknowledge that they make DVD's on the WEB.

The $75 to 89 listed for service in these reviews plus the shipping cost is more than I paid in the first place. I think I will go and buy a Real DVD now from some other company.

GE and Thompson ARE YOU READING THIS?

Strength:

Low Price

Weakness:

Lack of features

I have spent the last month looking to purchase a basic DVD player. I have read reviews and to be quite honest, the GE 1105p has had mixed reviews. I finally decided to purchase it when Walmart lowered the price to $149. What I got was exactly what I was looking for, a basic DVD player. I have not experienced any problems with this unit. Matrix played juct fine. If you are on a budget, looking to buy a second unit, or don't need the lastest and greatest, the GE 1105p is well worth the money.

Strength:

played DVD's

Weakness:

almost every movie skipped at some point & the player died after only 2 1/2 years of moderate use.

I had problems similar to many of the other reviews list here. Then one day is stopped working altogether. And only 2 1/2 years old. We don't even use it a lot. I took it in for repairs, and it would cost over $100 to fix. Bad laser. Now that I have been reading reviews, I can't wait to get a good DVD player. Don't buy this one, not matter how cheap.

Strength:

Easy to use

Weakness:

No No DTS

Will Not play two dvd's. The Matrix and Wild Wild West. Called Thomson Consumer Electronics. They said that this model in fact would not play those two exact movies. Go figure. They said that they would send me a new unit, then they changed their minds and said that I would have to mail it in and they would repair(upgrade the eprom) and send it back to me....

Weakness:

Let me count the ways. . . picture freezes, sometimes stops altogether

How frustrating is it when you spend money on something that is supposed to be so much better than a VCR, and it turns out to be infinitely WORSE? Amen to everyone who has complained about the picture freezing, etc. Thought it might be overheating, but it happens on some discs and not on others right after taking out the ones that were skipping. Brand new discs generally have no problem, but have yet to be able to finish a Blockbuster rental.

Hadn't tried customer service yet, but above remarks make it sound like a depressing prospect. Can't believe they make us pay for upgrade that is their fault. As a lawyer, I think that is illegal. Perhaps we should put together a class action suit against GE/Thomson. I bought a GE phone and it sucked too.

Probably will cave and just buy a Sony. Doubt I'll get any satisfaction on a return.

Am angry with buy.com for selling this machine to me knowing that there was a problem.

Strength:

NONE!

Weakness:

Will only display pictures in that stupid "letterbox" format--one cannot fill the screen with video. Picture Freezes Up Sometimes. Remote and Menus unwieldy.

I recommend that you skip this kind of cheap junk and wait for a decent unit to go on sale!

Apex--another piece of junk. This is what I get for being so cheap!
