Strength:

Nice picture when using S-Video output. Good sound, price is right.

Weakness:

Remote could use some color coding like the similar RCA models ... but that's a minor complaint considering you get use to the button layout anyways.

Nice, basic DVD player. It's all I have needed in a player. I just needed a good video source for my 28" (yes, Samsung makes a 28" TV) TV in my bedroom. I first used it with my 52" rear projection TV and was amazed at how good the picture was even compared to digital satellite.

When I got a Toshiba DVD player (w/ component video), I moved the GE to my smaller set.

I don't rent many movies, and I have had no problems with the ones I had. I don't miss DTS, and I doubt many listeners would anyways.

I was so happy with my player that I bought one for my brother's family last Christmas. We both have enjoyed out players without any problems. The picture quality is Hell of a lot better than any VCR in the same price range range. I have owned top of the line S-VHS decks that don't even come close.

Everything under the sun!

If you have cash and you really want a cheap DVD player then I suggest you buy a VCR instead of this friggen paper weight!

I've had girls play me better than this system. G.E. should stand for: "Garbation Electronics" Pure GARBAGE! I think Hefty garbage bags should sue these retards for giving garbage a VERY bad name!!!

G.E. Should retire. They went out with V neck shirts along time ago. To the people who run that corporation. BLOWE ME!

Strength:

It was cheap

Weakness:

Won't play several movies, poor customer service

I wanted to get into DVDs fast but didn't have a lot of money so I got one of these at WalMart. I wish I'd waited longer.

We rented "Galaxy Quest" which is when we first ran into the freeze-up when switching layers. Since that time, several movies have had this problem. These same disks play flawlessly in other players.

Thompson Electronics has denied having the firmware upgrade for this unit both on the phone and in a letter despite hearing from other users that they've gotten this upgrade. After talking with customer support, they made it seem like this problem was my fault.

I hope for the sake of our astronauts that no components on the shuttle or the ISS are made by GE/Thompson/RCA.

Avoid their products. Mine is now sitting in the attic.

Strength:

Cheapest at the time. Plays well most of the time.

Weakness:

freezes skips and won't play vcd or dvd-r

For anyone who has this piece of crap first I wish to offer my condolences.

If yours has stoped playing I found this advice from RCA:

Reset Instructions for RC5240, RC5910P, RC6000P, GE1101P, GE1105P, GE1106P, GE5803P:

With the power "ON", Press and hold the "STOP" button on the front panel. While holding the "STOP" button, press and hold the front panel "PLAY" button. After a few seconds, the "Select a menu language" cold start message will appear on the TV screen.

I have also been told that the freezing is due to lack of ventilation (gets too damn hot). I am going to use a dremel to cut a hole in the case and install a small 12v d.c. fan. If you want to know how it turns out email me and I'll e-mail you a pic of what I did and let you know how it is working now.

Hoped this helped and from now on don't buy anything from GE/RCA/Thomson electronics. I suggest panasonic, sony, or pioneer.

NONE, Good beer coaster!!!!

Weakness:

It was even made....

My wife bought me this piece of crap for X-Mas two years ago. At first it would skip every once and a while and lock up. Then it just got worse. The following X-mas I got Scary Movie. The player would not play it. I returned it to Thompson Consumer and they told me that, yes they were having problems with the early models and to send it back to them and they would send me another one. The one they sent me was worse... It not only would NOT play Scary Movie but it also would not play The Matrix... I am sorry a DVD player HAS to play The Matrix. I called and they said "Oh I am so sorry sir. Send it back and we will send you another one". No Thanks. You guys are a joke. BOYCOT ALL PRODUCTS DISTRIBUTED BY THOMPSON CONSUMER ELECTRONICS.. They all suck.

Strength:

At least it's a DVD player. Decent sound, good picture, not too expensive.

Weakness:

It's the Chevy truck of DVD players. Remote needs design attention, quality issues and material issues, remote buttons are not sensitive enough. Skips and one total lock up. I thought GE was pretty good company overall??? I have GE phones and a 15+ year old GE microwave and they're all good.

I really can't complain about this DVD player. I ran into it October of 2000 in an "everything" store that doesn't really specialize in anything. I believe it's a left over '99 unit and I have experienced problems such as skipping and total locked up once playing XMEN. But considering no more than it gets used (about once or twice every couple of months<---that's right), the player is pretty good. Yeah, it's a cheap model, but I'm not one of these people who's entire existance revolves around what kind of "toys" I have stocked up in my living room. I'd rather spend money on other things like my wheels. The player plays Spaceballs and History of the World like a dream probably because they're older DVD's. I watched Driven on it and had big time skipping problems because the movie was a rental and stratched and marked up. I played 13 Days, Tomcats, Joe Dirt recently and it performed spotless and all three were rentals. I haven't watched Matrix yet, that's on my to do list and I got to get Stars Wars Ep. I too. Oh, yeah, I got to get Bullit. Great car chase. Anyway, decent machine for someone who isn't going to run it 24-7.

Any one who is complaining about this product just doesn’t know how to treat there electronics. This DVD player is a great deal for a family or person just looking for a basic player with out all extra crap that really is not all that cool anyway. If your smart enough to keep good care of your player and don’t abuse it, it works great I’ve had mine for 2 years and never had a problem with it. And when I bought a SONY DVD player for another room in my house it broke after only 6 months and I keep my s@#t like brand new.

Strength:

Weakness:

Bad brand

I was given the 1105P for a christmas gift for christmas '99. I was able to watch about 15 movies over the course of 2 years and the machine won't read anything. I just purchased The Sopranos and popped it in to see if maybe it "fixed its self" but no luck. I got about 15min into the first episode and it froze and skipped and i couldn't take it. So i went to a local repair shop and conviently they don't service GE so i went home and made some phone calls. The other service places told me that DVD players are throw-away machines because if something goes wrong with them it is easier and cheaper to throw it out and get a new one. I was very disappointed with this machine and i am going to purchase another from a different brand.

If you are looking to purchase this model, no matter how cheap.......FU-GED-A-BOWD-IT. spend a little extra and get something better.

Strength:

inexpensive, has optical and s-video outputs.

Weakness:

poor case design, lack of ventilation, unable to read mp3 or CD-RW

Bought this unit on ebay almost two years ago. Nice small package, but noticed the apparent lack of ventilation for a CD Laser drive. Unit would occasionally lock up and stop reading discs after 3 or 4 hours. Found the trouble was with overheating (remember early pentiums anyone?). Removed the top cover and all has been good for the past year. Otherwise the unit has been good for a sub $100 unit.

My super human ability to read minds.

Weakness:

I dribble when I eat sausages.

The GE DVD is a really great buy! "FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!!"

I wouldn't use the GE dvd player as home base in a baseball game.

This system is sooooooooo lame that when I try to play any movie now it just skips like little red riding hood riding on the wolfs jimmy.

If you ask me all these other button holes that said they had no problems with the player must've just bought it. Look at Gizmo from gremlins, Yeah he's cute yeah he's a cool furry little dude but drop water on his a$$ and watch da sparks fly.

DON'T GET THIS PIECE OF SH*T BUYER BEWARE...... If you do you're doomed!!!!!!

But it makes for a really nice center piece on my table...

FOR ME TO POOP ON!
