Strength:

Plays any DVDs. Clear picture. Nice.

Weakness:

Heats up. The card beneath the DVD tray actually burned. Almost no repair shop would repair. Parts impossible to come by (according to a major electronics chain that tried fixing it).

I loved the player, but was extremely disappointed when it burned. Now i'm not too sure about the quality of the device.

Strength:

Bought 2 for the price of one Sony. Dropped one (while test fitting on my wall mounted tv) 8 feet to the ground with a DVD in it - it still works and plays as well as the same unit I have in my living room.

Weakness:

I now have 7 remotes in the living room - the remote for this unit is the largest. //// Thin metal on unit dented when I dropped my bedroom unit 8 feet /// Dark scenes are very dark . I watched The Sopranos (dark story / dark scenes) on video and it was bright - on APEX DVD...Dark,Dark,Dark //// Oh Yea - Audio Sync rarely happens on any DVD - getting used to watching lips move and then hearing talking (you will get used to it)...

Amazing Unit - a lot of metal and plastic for $99 from Circuit City.

Strength:

Plays DVD/VCD/SVCD/MP3/CD-R/CD-RW/Karaoke. Pretty much any shiny plastic disc thrown at it!

Weakness:

Stupid Remote Control and stupd LED display

This is the best DVD player I've ever owned, and it was only $99! Superb picture and sound quality. No artifacts like many of the other players. Loads VCD's quickly and flawlessy.

I've had the unit for a couple of weeks, and was surprised at all the features/functionality it has for the low, low price of only $99 (no rebates involved!)

I have had none of the problems other people have reported. It's been a flawless, enjoyable experience. From reading some other reviews, it would appear that many people do not know how to hook up their equipment. (If you're experiencing the picture fading in and out it's because you're running it through something like a VCR or splitter and Macrovision kicked in, you moron. Hook it up straight to your TV!)

I believe a lot of the older players had these problems, and that none of the newer ones should. Mine's great.

The downside is the remote has a lot of awkward little buttons on it, and that a lot of the player's functionality is controlled by the remote alone. So, lose the remote and lose Zoom, audio switching, captioning, etc. Also, while the majority of the functionality lies in the remote, the manual chooses not go into any detail. It has a layout of the remote, and what each button is, but not what each button atually does! So, press and experiment. I've found buttons that do nothing no matter what is playing, while others seem to do the exact same thing. What a pain in the butt!

It's also got a small LED display on the front. The player hopes to communicate things to you via this display. Right. Title, init, and whatever else it's trying to say come out horribly! "Title" comes out almost like EIEIEO, which can be humorous.

Even with those 2 shortcomings, this is still a 5 star DVD player. Why? Well, if you're hung up on things like the remote or trying to view the LED display, you're probably not going to like this player at all. But, if you want a great player at a criminal price, you're going to overlook such minor detail and see the Apex 600A for what it is.

Strength:

Feature packed. It has feature typically only seen on high end players. It played CDR's MP3's and more. The amount of feature per dollar was very high

Weakness:

UGLY and the overall quality is lacking. The faceplate is horrible, the display is pathetic. It would not play all DVD's even ones not known to be a problem and the damn thing would over heat.

Don't buy this. It may appealing due to the price but spend the extra bucks to buy something that you will be happy with.

Plays MP3's

I bought this for the mp3 capability, this unit plays mp3's off of cdr's. It also plays dvd's fairly well for a unit that cost below $200. Sure there are better dvd players out there but can they play mp3's? As a first generation dvd/mp3 player this unit is great.

Strength:

High Price/Feature ratio

Weakness:

Build Quality, A/V sync

On a leap of faith, I bought this unit on Valentine's day. I am returning it today, one day later. This player didn't waste any time disappointing me. I popped in Madonna's "Truth or Dare" DVD that I had just purchased, and the live segment audio and video were horribly out of sinc. It got pretty funny after a while watching her dance--I thought she was way off the beat, but watching her lipsinc revealed this player's dirty little problem.

I learned a hard lesson. Don't buy garbage--even though most DVD players are appliances with almost identical audio/video performance, it helps greatly if these two key attributes are in step with each other. I'm buying the Toshiba or Panasonic cheapo--about $50. more would be well-spent.

One last note to Circuit City and Best Buy employees--I know you're just getting to know the real world, but take some time after school and before your 5pm to 9pm shift starts to learn a little about customer service. It wouldn't hurt to learn a little about the products you sell, either. You're a bunch of slackasses with no people skills. Memo to CC and BB: Screen your employees! If the child you're interviewing for that sales floor position can't hear you over the "Korn" or "Limp Diskit" playing on his headphones, I guess he's hired! You're a bunch of idiots. Appologies to the handful of CC and BB employees that actually do a good job--they must exist somewhere...

Strength:

Plays mp3's, vcds, the menus were cool while they lasted, too bad the firmware on the original ones sucked.

Weakness:

Noticeable artifacts and digital noise on high quality tv's. Some discs worse than others. If you have a small tv go for it, if not stay away.

At first the Apex Ad600a was a hackers heaven. The loophole menu allowed us to essentially give the MPAA the finger. However, the firmware on these models sucked and often lipsync problems would occur, and seemless branching discs would crash. On my 53" Sony tv artifacts were highly noticable and annoying. Time to get me a better player.

Strength:

Certainly inexpensive,many 'gimmicky'features,not bad looking.

Weakness:

Sometimes CRONIC sync problem, slight pixeling, irritating electronic sort of scraping sound coming from machine every 2-3 seconds, froze on several occasions.

For a fist DVD player you can't really go wrong. The sync problem was'nt always present, but when it was it was just awful-that said however I watched approximately 50 movies and it occured for about half of them;but usually lasted 10 minutes or so then would just right itself but sneak back again without warning.Very frustrating!
The scraping noise mentioned above became an annoyance too.Especially noticeable when playing audio CD's at quieter volumes.I've no idea what the cause was and many people probably would'nt even notice it.
As mentioned it did ''freeze'' on me a couple of times, but after shuting down and re-starting it'd be fine.Pixelling was only present in especially dark areas.
On the positive side picture was generally very clear, and the sound reproduction excellent.
There is no mistaking this for anything other than a budget player, and maybe I'm guilty of concentrating only on the bad points as apposed to the good, but I can recommend this player to anyone on a tight budget as it is good value for money, and I payed a hell of a lot more for it here in New Zealand than most of you in the U.S.A.
Basically a good introduction to the world of DVD,but think twice and if you can afford better then do so.
Goodbye from the bottom of the South Pacific.

Strength:

Cheap player that does MP3 playback.

Weakness:

This player features a good quantity of features but lacks in the quality of these features. Skips, freezes, sound does not work correctly sometimes, and zoom feature is horrible.

You get what you pay for in this player. I wish I would have done my homework to start with and I wouldn't have made the mistake of buying an Apex. I've owned it for 9 months and the power supply burnt up on me a few days ago which I have read to be a common problem. Kinda funny since I had it plugged into a surge protector. The player has always skipped on perfectly clean DVDs and occasionally freezes completely. The sound does not go with the video which gets really annoying when somebody is talking and the words do not match thier lips. Sometimes I would lose sound completely if I would try to fastforward or skip to a different chapter. The zoom feature doesn't work very good. The player begins to skip even more, the video quality gets degraded and you still have those stupid black bars at the top and bottom.

I tried getting the player fixed but Apex wants me to ship it to them and pay $60 plus shipping to have it fixed. Why Why would I pay to fix something that didn't work to start with? Apex wouldn't even send me the power supply to replace. You only have to take out 4 screws and unplug 4 cables to replace the dumb thing, how hard could that be? Worth $60? No way! My recommendation DO NOT BUY AN APEX!!!

Good DVD player for home use.

Weakness:

Remote has too many small look alike buttons.
No optical cable output.

For those who are still looking for this DVD go to www.bestbuy.com and can order through internet, not at local stores. Make sure the manufacturing date is before 9/99 to have the secret menu available.
