Strength:

Plays all formats: DVD CD VCD SVCD CD-R CD-RW MP3.
Has karaoke functions

Weakness:

Plays it all very bad

I live in the Netherlands, where this product is called "Hiteker BI-600-E". I bought it for it's MP3 replaying capabilities, but I'am very disappointed. The only .mp3 file which was played good, was one encoded with MP3-Blaster-2000 at 192Kbps. All other mp3 files created with other encoders sounded very-bad, while most of these files sounded OK replayed by WinAmp on my computer (over a HiFi-system).

The video output, while playing DVD's, has "reflections" in it which look like vertical bars.

11 days after a bought it the power-supply failed. It didn't go ON anymore, and a hired DVD was inside!! A opened the case to see if the fuse was blown, but it wasn't. I discovered that the replay-mechanism is a standard PC DVD-player with a normal IDE interface. After connecting the mechanism to my computer, a could recover my hired DVD!

Now I am going to return the whole unit to the store where a bought it, hoping to get an other from another brand.

Arie.

Strength:

1)Cost 2)Features VS Cost 3)Slimline design
4)Entertaining Chinese- English translation in Manual

Weakness:

Occasional pausing & pixelation of image
Occasional system lockups requiring the 'OL reboot.

This Review regards the AD-500A,
Although this player has had several glitches & unexplained lockups, 90% or more of the time it works as expected.
I believe most players in the under $200.00 range are built from similar parts, and share common design. They also share the same glitches,Etc. Good value for the money.

APEX AD-500B
Everything! Price, picture and sound quality, power button on remote

Weakness:

NONE

APEX AD500-B
This player has worked flawlessy for me! I watched The MATRIX, 007 The World Is Not Enough, and Mission Impossible 2 with no trouble! It also has a power button on the remote! (although I think apex says you still have to switch off the main switch when done viewing). I have had absoloutly no problems whatsoever! Give it a try! I was skeptical at first after reading these reviews, but took a chance because of the price. I have been happily surprised!
I hope it continues to work for a long time. I could not find anything comprable for the price! Maybe Apex has been able solve the problems people claimed they were having with earlier units? I love it! If you don't have or want to spend over $200 for a similar brand, give the Apex a chance.

Strength:

Plays many formats, price

Weakness:

It's a piece of crap

This is for the A-500
I wouldn't even recommend this machine as a paper weight.
Basically had if for a week, Got a super price (no wonder) Within the week it stopped playing, then wouldn't stop unless you turned the power button off, not even the remote would control it. Then the next time I used it the power would not come on, had to unplug/plug-in 2-3 times to get it fired up. Picture quality fair, sound, average. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. In theory it is a good package and maybe with some high-end cables a descent picture in possible but the components are junk. I went out and bought the Toshiba 1600 I will let you know.

Weakness:

Long screws protruding from bottom of unit. (Scratched the heck out of my E-Center while hooking it up) Wouldn't play a MP-3 CDR. Read the rest of the reviews! Cheesy screen saver.

I read the reviews before I bought this and I still bought it. hehe I was hoping for the loopholes model. I got a normal one. It was a good deal at $179 and then a $25 rebate came out and I got that. (I'm Cheap) I had to run it through a VCR since my TV only has an "F" input. I ran into a problem doing this. The video would get real dark and change levels so you couldn't watch. I returned it to find the new one did it also! I think I was getting Macrovision problems from the VCR. I ran it through a cheap RF Modulator and it works fine (OOPS!) No problems since. :-)
It wouldn't play my first MP-3 disk and I haven't tried burning another one yet.
I'm not an Audiophile or Videophile so I think it works fine.

Strength:

Gives a lot of features for a small price

Weakness:

You Get what you pay for.

Apex in my opinion is going to become a sinking ship. I bought 2 of the AD500A units and both would freeze up while playing DVD's after about 1 hour. No remote or unit commands would function except for the power button. I returned both and received a AD500B and an AD600A. Well they improved a bit, instead of locking up now both units experienced temporary freezing of the screens, without using a dual layered DVD. I returned these units to Circuit City and the clerk mentioned that they had a lot of returns of these units. I saw 4 stacked behind her while she processed my 2 additional returns. I strongly recommend that you pick a better brand. You may not notice the problem all of the time but if you are a movie buff like I these units will drive you crazy. If a cheap price is what you want and you can live with occasional pauses in the movie maybe this unit is what you want, it is cheap....

Strength:

Plays MP3, CD's

Weakness:

DVD playback inconsistant, lousy remote, cheap look.

Basically bought this a back-up dvd player, but I've really gotten more than my money's worth playing mp3's, 8 hours plus. The DVD problem I've had is a color fading in and out and some skipping or freezing up. Got "Top Gun" for Xmas and it played without a problem so I'm wondering if some of the rental dvd's might be some of the problem. Most of the rentals do all right.
Bottom line for the price it is an ok unit especially for mp3 or cd playing. If you are looking for the dvd experience only look somewhere else, but the value here is in all the other stuff it can do.

Strength:

AD-703: 3 Disc Changer, great CD player, does well with CD-R's with MP3. Okay with DVD. Great Price for all it has. Couldn't find anything comparable @ $200 with the DD 5.1 Decoder. Still a little buggy though.....

Weakness:

DVD playback: Froze up on the T-2 Ultimate Edition Menus but played movie just fine. Froze twice on X-men previews and menu but then was fine and played movie fine.
DVD Sound: Half way through Drop Dead Gorgeous the sound started lagging about a half a second behind the picture. I stopped the movie and started again and it got back on track. May run a little hot like the 600-660 did.

Okay, I read many of the reviews on the AD-600 & 660 before buying the AD-703 so I knew I was taking a chance that I would not get a full functioning unit. And guess what, its mostly functioning and yes, you have to think things through pretty thoroughly if you are going to understand how the remote is laid out and works.

Here are my gripes:

Has difficulty with the newer DVD's that include Seamless Branching features and have complex menus.

Specifically would not play X-men with the seamless branching feature turned on. However, it played it fine with that feature turned off. Locked up on almost all the menus in T-2 Ultimate Edition but seemed to play movie just fine. Played Drop Dead Gorgeous almost perfectly. However, half-way through the movie the sound began lagging about a 1/2 second but after stopping and starting the movie, it got itself back on track. I'm going to run it through some tougher movies this weekend: Matrix, Gladiator, stuff that has a lot of extras before I decide if it goes back or not.

No power button on remote (resolved this by running it through my receiver’s pass through outlet)

Cheesy screen-saver (but who really cares about a DVD screen-saver?)

No multi-disc shuffle feature.

No shuffle feature for MP3 discs.

Goofy remote layout.

Karaoke features (who really does karaoke at home?) – remote also has two buttons that don’t do anything except control the karaoke pitch (the “#” key and the “flat” key next to it).

LCD display and the stupid blinking disc light (this lights up and flashes the entire time the disc plays)

Here are my praises:

Only player under $200 with a DD 5.1 decoder & MP3, CD-R & CD-WR compatible.

3 disk changer.

LCD dimmer switch.

Even though its a new company and the unit is made in China, they do now have a web-site that is fairly useful: www.apexdigitalinc.com. Each product is listed and I noticed that the AD-700 & AD-703 are both FIRMWARE UPGRADABLE. This is good. I called tech support on the 800# (you have to call the regular number and ask for the 800#, I lost it or I'd post it) and asked what bugs the Firmware Upgrade fixes for the AD-700 and they went through the list of everything I want fixed on the 703: Seamless Branching and complex menus on newer DVD’s as described above, audio lag as described above and the MP3 problem of not playing the first 1-2 second of each track when you manually scroll through the tracks.
Needless to say, I was pretty impressed (I was sure tech support was going to be useless) with the info they gave me. However, they DO NOT have the Firmware Upgrade ready for the AD-703 yet and didn't know when it would be ready but they claim they are working on it as a top priority and that it will be soon (don’t know what soon means though, very frustrating).

Overall I think this is a good value but I still might return it if the Firmware Upgrade does not become available soon. I wasn't expecting perfection so I wasn't disappointed….yet!

If anyone else has the AD-703 model or the AD-700 (and has upgraded the firmware) I'd like to hear your feedback, please feel free to email me.

None, 1st DVD player but I did plenty of research before buying this one. The picture is good but I don't have much to compare it to. The sound is really good with the 5.1 DD enabled.
