Strength:

Has been durable!

Weakness:

The digital out for DTS has a short in it.

I have never had a sound/speech delay in any movie. Maybe I got lucky and got one that Apex first put out on the assembly line before hiring Mr. "Murphy"! I have played several dvd's for over 2 years now and have had a total of 4 that I couldn't watch. I usually rent around 2 a week. You do the math. Unfortunately, I now have to pull my digital coax wire to the side in order for my DTS sound to transmit to the receiver. I feel like I am in college again and have to wrap tin foil on my rabbit ears to get some reception (I'm sure some of you have done that) If anyone knows how to fix the problem that would be great. I am not one to rip the guts out of a machine, but if it is simple, it's better than watching everything in analog!!!!

Strength:

Price, features, upgradability

Weakness:

The need to upgrade for better performance

I picked this unit up for the loophole menu and the ability to play mp3's. It has not failed me once, did have problems playing the DVD's with branching but I have since installed the N6 frimware and now it plays fine along with still having the macrovision and region coding disabled. I have also updated the DVD drive firmware by hooking it up to my pc and running the update program. The unit now works flawlessly, no more freeze ups when going from chapter to chapter fast or waiting for it to catch up. I did not buy this unit for sound or picture quality but I am happy with it, it is hooked up to my 41 inch Sony projection TV and it looks good enough for me and as for sound I have it hooked up through the digital out so it bypasses the lower quality DAC that is built in.

Strength:

the only game in town capable of playing chinese dvd's, the friendliness of the owners on the websites.

Weakness:

a hot mama. not multiregion hackable or multi-region hackable, unless you redo the rom memory with a new chip.

when it comes to an unplayable dvd with my other machines, this puppy gives the best college try of any to play the defective disk.

but, without region freedom and macrovision freedom, this is just a me-too entry in the prices-rapidly-falling current environment.

better than a vcr player, but there are many dvd players now who surpass the apex, for less money.

again, to ensure less problems several hours into a long dvd movie, try ventilating the unit so that pent-up heat does not cause unpredictable skips.

and you won't find a more friendly owners network of Apex for any other brand on the net.

Guys, don't be pissed off by this machine!!! Primare V10/20 owners should be jealous. They own the same machine, with the same problems, the same service-problems, but for a total different price. What about a sour $ 1,500.- for a different cabinet .............

Strength:

I have an early unit, so I have the loophole menu with Macrovision (copy-protection), CSS, and Region defeats! I can play and record DVDs and VCDs from any region. Other than that, it was cheap, has good video quality (500 lines) and plays CD-R's full of MP3's through my stereo system.

Weakness:

Frequent "lip-sync" problem (can usually be corrected by doing a brief reverse scan or restarting the chapter) and bad MP3 menu display. Plus the original ones are ugly looking.

Full feature set, but 90% of it accessible only from the remote. Has zoom and camera angle features, which are cool but I never use them. Has good video playback quality and raw digital output for 5.1 decoding. But I bought this unit primarily because of the loophole menu so I can record to S-VHS (usually videos for my kids) and for the MP3 playback, so in that respect there is no comparison. :-)

DVD-ROM on my PC, which hangs all the time, so I suppose this is better.

Lip Synch, Won't play some titles thru menu, Reliability

My wife bought me this player for my birthday last year. Video and sound quality seemed very good to me, until yesterday when the dang thing quit working. Every time any kind of disc is inserted (tried CDs and DVDs) a "no disc" message is displayed within just a few seconds.

Lots of cool stuff. mp3 decoding was awesome

Weakness:

Absolutely sad. it would stop in middle of movies and the picture and sound were way off. A crap experience. I will only buy name brands. At least I exchanged it for a phillips that didn't work. I have a panasonic and it kicks ass.

Strength:

Multiple formats. I have the version with the hidden menu.

Weakness:

DVD playback

The versatility of this machine is unmatched, with DVD, VCD, CD, CD-R, MP3, PAL, NTSC, and Macrovision-defeat, multi-region.

However, as a DVD player, it sucks. It screws up on certain DVDs, and video quality is visibly worse than others.

I use this as an MP3 player exclusively, and have it as a backup for another DVD player, especially if just I case I have a disc from another region. (Note that current players are not multiregion.)

Strength:

Can play many formats. Good sound.

Weakness:

Poor picture at times. Does not look well on high end tvs.

This player has very bad picture quality on high end tvs such as the Sony Wegas for projecton tvs. The sound however is just as good as my Sony player. With a firmware upgrade this player some what improves. The picture quality is the same but it does let you play seemless braching discs.
