Strength:

Nice clean, sweet, detailed sound.

Weakness:

Cant read some CD-Rs and a few original CDs.

This CD player produces clean, detailed music and has an airy soundstage. At a used price of $300 or below, you will rarely find a similar CD player that gives you the same quality of sound as the Marantz 6000 OSE gives. Its weakness ,however, is that it wont read most CD-Rs. But with a Marantz 6000 OSE, you would most likely be after sound quality and would have an aversion to music coming from CD-Rs, which are generally thin sounding compared to original recordings. Note that this unit sounds better with a pair of high quality RCA interconnects compared to digital cable.

Strength:

Variable analogue output allows direct connection to power-amp which sounds better in my setup. Deep soundstaging and details are abundant for the price. Direct connection to power-amp offers an explosive 3D, open and transparent sound.

Weakness:

Treble is a tad sharp but not harsh. Lower mid-range could be better as overall tonality leans toward the upper mid-range spectrum.

I bought a used Marantz CD6000OSE for my headphone setup but currently, it's partnering with my main system as stipulated below: Musical Fidelity A3CD pre-amp Krell KSA-150 power-amp. Kimber Kable Silver Streak cables throughout. MAS Masterlink speaker cables. I was initially disappointed with the sound of the Marantz cdp when hooked up to my main system. Soundstaging was narrow, bass was "thuddy" and the overall sound was "shut-in". In fact, it sounded worse than my 10-year old Pioneer PD9700 which I still play every now and then. The latter actually hammers the Marantz in domains like soundstaging and musicality. However, the Pioneer loses out to the Marantz in terms of details and rhythm/pace. Upon discovery of the Marantz having a variable analogue output, I bypassed the pre-amp and connected it direct to my Krell power-amp. The changes wrought are astonishing! Adjusting the volume control to around mid level, soundstaging spreads out like an eagle with height, width, and depth reaching beyond the speakers distance. Details and transparency improved tremendously and the end result made it seemed like a different CD player was at work. Being more revealing, treble is a tad pronounced but never hush. Tonality also leans toward the higher spectrum but it could be owing to the Soundcare Superspikes underneath the player. Replacing them with soft isolators like Vibrapods or Isobearings may improve the lower mid-range which I think is lacking albeit a small degree. Overall, a good enough player to hang out with more expensive and high-ranking ancillaries. Those who finds the sound of the Marantz CD6000OSE desirable with their pre-power setup should explore the direct route to the power-amp.

Strength:

For this price, it's excellent. I would be pleasantly surprised if one could find anything better under 1000 usd.

Weakness:

The remote controlled volume keeps going back up to maximum when you switch off and then on again. A memory effect would be nice.

I use CD 6000 OSE LE. Originally very poor, but after running it in for 36 hours non stop, this baby is oozing quality. Very detailed sound compared to my old 18bit/8times sampling player. Soundstaging very good for this price. This model has a remote controlled volume control. Strongly suggest you bring volume down to mid levels for better clarity and less distortion (many not aware of this). This player surprisingly quite heavy. Great with classical, rock, jazz. But some piano music quite thin (could be the recording not sure). Very relaxed sound which I particularly like (not suitable for some).

It´s sounds good, but had broken. The transport system stops working after 3 minutes and appears "Error" on the screen. Sory. And it´s the second Marantz with this problem. Poor fiability.

This is one of those players, that comes a long every now & again, that re-defines your CD collection. A new benchmark at the price, what more can I say 5 Stars.

Strength:

musical

Weakness:

too clean and smooth. cuts impact off drums and rim shots. Guitars can sound too smooth.

takes the excitement out of some types of music. sounds very clean, but it is too clean and paints a very pink picture. I would recommend the Rotel or Sony instead.

Strength:

Warm full sound, less analytical than Denon

A great lower-priced unit that brings a very natural sound to most music, unless you are into crap like Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pantera. For that, I recommend a KMart brand boombox.

Strength:

Lots of detail in a beautiful soundstage. Upgrades every piece in your system

Weakness:

* 24 hour burn in period at purchase
* up to this moment warming up of 1 hour
* some minor problems with CDR-error
* very poor interconnects are supplied at purchase

My sound system actually consists of:
· Yamaha AX 590 amp.
· Yamaha DSP-E 580 processor
· JVC SEA-60 Equaliser/Analyser
· JBL 4312 A Control Monitor Speakers
· Van den Hul interconnect
· 2 x 5 mm2 OFC speaker cable

Until December last year, I used the Yamaha CDX 390 as a player. I wanted to buy a CD-recorder, so this player couldn’t last because it didn’t have a digital out.
At first, I wanted the Yamaha CDX 596 in combination with the Yamaha CDR 1000. Unfortunately, the CDR 1000 wasn’t available anymore in Belgium because of...too good for its money, and it was succeeded by the twin deck CDR 651 with less qualities. Second choice was a Marantz DR 6000 recorder, so therefore it was better to look out for a player of the same brand.
I went to a shop/auditorium in Laarne (Belgium) where I took and got all the time in the world to listen and compare my favourite cd. The sound produced by the dual tray Marantz DR 6050 was nice, but not impressive. Second was the CD 6000 OSE. Better than the previous one. Last came the CD 6000. Magnificent! A far better soundstage than the plain 6000, for a few dollars more. The Yamaha CDX 596 sounded very common. I tested the 6000 OSE with several different brands of speakers, and it appeared to me it performed at it’s best with powerful bass speaker systems.
Now my report of the behaving of this machine at home! Unpack the player and find out that he’s a heavyweight: nearly 6 kilo’s. That is the double of my old player... A very important quality against vibrations and skipping. When I started it up at home it sounded quiet lousy. After some 24 hours of playing (not non-stop, but near to it), the “real thing” came out of my speakers. Songs I thought I knew by heart sounded completely different all of a sudden: more complex, much more detailed. Some bass tracks almost blew me out of my shoes! Etc, etc.
In good recordings, you get a clear view of the position of the instruments and especially of the singer, who almost seems to stand in front of the speakers before the other musicians. This player gives you real stereo with a perfect channel separation and big dynamics. Listen to Bjork’s “Homogenic”, Chemical Brothers’ “Surrender”, Moby’s “Play”, Pixies “Doolittle”, Eels’ “Beautiful Freak” and Grandaddy’s “Sophtware Slump”, and you’ll know what I mean with good recordings in stereo.
A minority of my cd don’t sound as nice as they used before. To my opinion, it’s due to the fact that this player really reveals all of a recording. So when it’s badly recorded, it’ll sound even worse than before on this kind of equipment.
After copying with the DR 6000 Marantz (see other review) I had some small problems with a few CDR. When selecting directly a track with the remote control, sometimes “error” appeared on the display. After open/close it worked again. In this matter I experienced that when keeping tray and disk completely dust free, you get the best results.
Very important, even now after 4 months: when you want to obtain a pedigree sound, it is absolutely necessary to let this baby warm up minimum one hour before you actually intend to start listening. You don’t need to turn on the other equipment of your system. If you don’t do so, the first 60 minutes will have a lack of bass and dynamics. In my opinion, this “problem” will remain, due to the HDAM on the output stage, instead of the regular opam’s used in other players.
Make sure to install this player on a flat underground, perfectly horizontal on tile of corch (thickness approx. 1 cm). Also attach soft rubber rings (height approx. 1 cm) under the four sockets.
Once so far, sit back, relax and enjoy the real thing. Rediscover your favourite tunes, and all this at a very reasonable price.

Strength:

Smooth and Open. Build quality. Matches well with entry level high end gear but at a budget price point. Musical

Weakness:

Lacks low level resolution and depth.

Killer cd player at this price point. Not too much to fault except that it lacks the articulation of the real high end players. Easy on the wallet and on the ears which makes it easy to listen to for long periods. Super value!
