I compared this product to several other receivers.Denon AVR2700
HK-85
Sony STR-DA50ES
Yamaha 795
Kenwood 2090
I found the following:
The Denon did not have DTS. Other then that it sounded great. I think that if I had more uses for my receiver then just movies and the Denons had a receiver that was more favorably priced, I would have chosin to buy one.
I tested the HK-85 blind against an Onkyo and then tweeked with it to insure proper setup. The Onkyo in my opinion sounded much better in AC3 then the HK-85 did. The Onkyo was just to expensive ($1699) and didn't have DTS. The HK was basically very flat. We even cranked the volume, changed the speakers several times, turn SW Out on and off to see if we could pull a little more detail out of any of the sounds with no success. The movie we used to test it was The Mask Of Zorro.
I checked out one Non ES Sony and the Sony STR-DA50ES. Bottom line, I didn't like the Non ES one enough to even remember the model number. The 50 on the other hand sounded good. Every part of it generally sounded good. The effects sounded good, and the music was good enough for me. Right after listening to the Sony we turned on the Yamaha 995.
At first I thought something was different, like a little volume enhancing to sway my decision on buying a receiver, but then I looked at the Yamaha and saw it was basically at the same volume. One thing I noticed instantly was that the Yamaha's quiets were REAL quiet, whereas the louds were REAL loud. This suggests a good Dynamic Range. We tried out different speakers and the Sony and Yamaha performed differently on each one. I thought the Yamaha was preferable on every set we tried including the Take 5 System I ended up buying.
Not much to say about the Kenwood, it looked great, sounded good, but just wasn't my bag for the price. I wasn't aware of the 2080 at the time and I heard the 2090 had problems, so I really didn't go there to much.
Bottom line: The 795 was most in my price range, with the features I wanted, the 995 went beyond what I needed. I found both Yamahas to have the best Soundfield, DRange, and realism of the group while listening to AC3 and supporting DTS. I just think, for the money ($620) the 795 was the best deal, unless you want a little more power and Multiroom, I would suggest the 795. Anymore then that, the A1 would be my choice.

Sorry to hear about Steve from CA. Sounds like your product got banged up on shipment. ICheck the voltage selection in the back. Mine came in set to 220v, make that whatever the standard is for you area.

On the other hand, I don't have any problems with mine. It actually is working great. I love the sound I get from it. Subwoofer sounds terrific. DTS is impressive.

Here are some of the features on the unit:

*6-Channel (5.1)
*25 Sorround Programs
*Built in Dolby Digital and DTS Decoding
*Auto-Input Selector
*Bass Extenstion Control
*40-Station Direct Access Tuning
*Record Out Selector

I recently bought 995 and in one word it is "AWESOME" !!!...I just have one problem which I think is probably the fault from Cable TV provider.
Whenever I switch to or directly turn on Cable TV the sound becomes very low and I have to increase the volume on TV/DBS mode. If I dont remember to turn it down before switching to VCR/DVD it results in an explosive sound and I have to scramble to turn it low

Did anybody else had similar problems ? My friend suggested that there could be something wrong with the cable feed ....

any comments/help appreciated
thanks a ton

I auditioned the VSX-27 against the Yamaha 995. With Paradigm speakers (everything for the mini monitors through the Reference 60's)The pioneer outshined the yamaha musically, But when it came to DVD (ac-3) (The Matrix), the was not comparison, the Yamaha, was stunning. I heard things that the pioneer never picked up. The sound stage with the Yamaha was vast where as the pioneer seemed narrow.

Overall I think the Yamaha was a bit bright, but the neutral sounding Paradigms helped bring them down a bit, the Pioneer was sonically superior, but for Home theater I was very disappointed.

I really wanted to like the pioneer. But the HT characteristics of the Yamaha won me over.
Any thoughts?

I purchased the 995 about 2 months ago, I have been putting off writing up my review in fear of over stating the performance of this unit. In hind sight I probably would have been right with every thing I might have said after listening to it for only a couple of hours. Initially I was looking for a home receiver with DD, so I looked at the technics combo (SA-AX6 + SH500D) but the reviews were disappointing. I looked around at other reviews and the Harmon Kardon AVR-65, but this time the reviews were mixed. The scary thing was that there was apparently some kind of problem with the manufacturing of the unit which caused several minor and one very large problem, a low humming noise. No thanks. I really wasn't even considering the Yamaha 995, it was a little more than I wanted to spend but I figured it would be worth it in the end. I was right. Essentially the 795 and the 995 and comparable minus the record switch, multi digital inputs, and a very nice amp section. I opted for the 995 because of the amp primarily. Why? Because comparing the amp section of the 795 and 995 its clear that the 995's amp will produce much cleaner sound at higher volumes, which I like to do.
Ok enough about other receivers, how about this one? After unpacking and setup, which was easily done. I turned everything on a put a CD in and at first I thought, this isn't any better then the JVC RX-815V I replaced it with. All of that burst like a bubble when the volume was turned up. There was vertually no evidence of any 'hiss'. The bass was clean, mid's clear, and the highs where they were supposed to be. The biggest indication of quality from my perspective was noticed when I entered the DSP section. On many cheaper home receivers, DSPs mangle the sound making it sound cheap and artificial. I am not a particular fan of DSPs because of my past experience with them, but all of that faded as I cycled through most of the 25 available (some are only available depending on the decoder setting, DD, DTS, etc.)

There is really only one gripe about this unit, and to be quite honest I knew that I would have it while I was in the store paying for it.

The remote. Quite simply I can not believe that I paided over a thousand dollars for a wonderful piece of technology, only to be disappointed with the very portion of the unit that is used daily. I am reminded each and every day. I know it, my wife knows it, hey even my cat knows it. The funny thing is, everyone that comes over and see's that behemoth sitting there on the coffee table exclaims what an incredible remote. Ok, if they actually had to use the stupid thing they would understand. Yes the remote looks flashy but who wants to open a flap (with two hands) and press four or five poorly layed out buttons? I now keep the remote under the table and just use the universal remote for most of the daily uses. Thanks Yamaha!

Alright, enough griping. The unit is a solid 4 out of 5. 5/5 with a better remote.

I have my RXV995 just about 33hours ago. First I am satisfied already with the remote control that oftenly most of the owner are complaining with. My currentA/V set-up is a Pioneer DVL909 Combo (DVD/LD/CD/VCD) player with Sheerwood 2 center speakers,Yamaha NS-50 Tower design Main Speakers & 4 rear speakers( 2 Sony at the back & 2 Sheerwood Small effect speaker @ the sides).2 VCR( Sony & Mitsubishi SVHS)also @ at the hook, for monitor a 30" Samsung Plus TV using the S-Video connections.Furtunately all of them can be controled with the 995 remote control. That's satisfying!!!
I was bit disapointed with only 1 RCA RFin for LD but non for DVD. There is only the Optical-in which is much expesive to use that the RCA jack only,,.
" WHY IS THAT? " Only if they put that on, maybe we can say perfect design for the Yamaha rxv995 model. NO! questions ask for the sound & clarity the unit does in both LD/DVD & SVHS ...
Note> Set up properly the setup menu & parameter adjustment to optimize the effects & in quality of sound reproduce since the 995 is complicated a bit on adjustments,...
Since I have my 995, I give 5 stars for the unit & 4 for NO! RCA input for DOLBY DIGITAL DVD...
