I posted a eview on this unit a few months ago. That was when I owned a Sony s7000 dvd player. I soon after purchased the 7700 with dts. At first I enjoyed the unit as much as before, until I purchased my first DTS dvd The River Wild. The sound dropped out for about 1 second. I then returned the dvd and got another copy figuring that the disc was not compressed properly. Well when I got it home, it dropped out at the exact location as the last disc. When I went back to the store, they did not believe me because they said that they played the first one I returned and no drop out at all. I did not believe him so we went into the sound room and he played the disc in the same dvd player as I have. We sat down and he was right no drop out at all. I then noticed that he was playing the disc through the Denon 5700. When i asked him to swith it to the 995, all of the sudden, the drop out came back. Big problem. I have recieved numerous e-mails with people experiencing the same problems in the 795, 995, and the 2095, all of which have the same dts processor. When I spoke with Yamaha about this problem, they told me that it was a problem with DTS in their first generation discs, and that they would send me a newer DTS disc of my choice, well I picked Born On The Fourth Of July. Put it in, and guess what, It dropped out in two scenes. I called yamaha right away, and they pretty much told me to buy another brand. The store where I purchased the 995 has begun taking a lot of audio DTS discs off the shelf. The Yamaha tech told me that the reason the unit drops out is that it is soo sensitive and it picks up every little detail that it drops out. That makes no sense to me. The fact that they tried to bribe my problem away with giving me a new dvd instead of correcting the problem causes me to question this company. They are to busy passing the buck, blaming DTS, well why does the discs play fine in Sony, Denon, and B&K, are there processor inferior to yamaha, or is it the other way around. We the consumers have spent a lot of hard earned money into this product. Isn't 1000.00 enough money to get a piece of equipment that has at least functional parts in it? I guess not. Lets face it when most of us pay this kind of money for something, we EXPECT to get at least five years of enjoyment out of the product, even though by the time we get the product home, and hooked up, it is already "old technology". With this in mind, why invest money into something that just don't work right, or better yet, why give your money to a company that knowingly puts a product out that just doesn't work, and then does nothing about it but blames another company. this company is so bad that they could at least offered me a DTS dvd that they absolutely knew would not have dropped out. What a joke, for Yamaha that is, they are laughing all the way to the bank knowing they put outdated processors in all their units. Don't buy this on principle alone. The sound quality is pretty good, a little bright, but good. For sound a three and a half. For overall performance 0. Not even worth rating, the only reason I am in here right now is to let other potential consumers to be aware of the problem because Yamaha, and most of the stores that carry yamaha won't acknowledge the problem, and why would they, this unit is one of the hottest units on the market. they woud be dumb to ruin a good thing for them. |

I purchased this 995 a couple of months back and have loved every minute of it's use. It has a very good way of creating these wonderful soundfields. I too have tried the DTS river disc and experienced the same situation. As mentioned previously. I found that because the receiver has absolutely no way of knowing time lapse how could the receiver be at fault with a movie dropping out at the exact same spot every time. So I contacted DTS who did tell me that they had pressed some movies wrong and they would send me out some other movies. I don't believe Yamaha has anything to do with making or distributing movies. Anyways, the movies they sent me were fine. I did call Yamaha to bring it to their attention and they were aware that these wrongly pressed movies were only showing up with their DTS receivers because their DTS decoder chip was built to exact specifications. Which meant that if there is a flaw on a disc, even a small one, the chip is sensitive to the flaw. They also told me they are in complete contact with DTS and are trying to get DTS to resolve thier pressing problem. DTS also told me the same thing.I urge anyone and everyone interested in this receiver to please press forward and become another very happy user. Overall PROformance 5, customer satisfaction 5...YAMAHA ROCKS, you gotta love it!!! |

I have been shopping after a good receiver for quite a while. This is what I was looking for:On board DD and DTS, 6 channel input(future proof), amp out for all channels(when I move to a house I will use the receiver as a pre-amp connected to a more powerful external amplifier), good built quality, operation free of bugs, NO 360 degrees rotatory volume knob(that elimineted all DENONs). Soundwise I wanted it free of distortion when played loud, smooth high frequencys, clean treble and no hiss. All that for $ 1,000 dollars. Tried new receivers from HARMAN KARDON/ROTEL/SONY ES and YAMAHA. These were my findings: |

I got a new Rxv-995 from good guys for $719. Could anyone believe this? It was $799, then the sales man gave me another $80 discount. The sound is really amazing. Since so many people compare the rxv995 and denon avr3300. Finally, I went to good guys and brought avr3300 home to compare with the 995. As result, I kept the rxv-995 and returned avr3300 in the next day after listening those two for a couple hours. Both are very nice and have clean sound. The avr3300 has a little bid better on the bass, but rxv995 has a little bid better on the treble. I invited a couple frinds of mine. Finally they have same opinion with |

IF YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR A DIGITAL RECEIVER YOU COULD NOT DO ANY BETTER THAN THE 995. I'VE HAD MINE FOR ABOUT A MONTH NOW,AND IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME.IT IS THE BEST SOUNDING PIECE OF GEAR I'VE EVER OWNED.IT'S RATED AT 100W,BUT I THINK THAT TO BE VERY CONSERVATIVE.FOR MUSIC IT IS VERY VERY CLEAN.FOR MOVIES IT IS UNBELIEVABLE.DOLBY DIGITAL AND DTS DVDS ARE SPECTACULAR. |
