Strength:

Love it,...it sounds best(DVD/CD) hookup with TOSLINK hookup. The optical hookup is top notch. Power is enough, highs are crisp and bass is low(of course this is determined by the speakers being used).

Weakness:

The remote is a little busy and harder to use.

This 995 was a replacement for my old 990(lightning victim) and I cannot tell any difference basically. I like the DD and DTS automatically changing, according to signal input.

I bought a new Sony DVD to pass the DTS signal.

I have Klipsch speakers,...KLF-30's, C7-Center and KSW-15 Sub, with satelite speakers...I mean it sounds great!!!!

I gave it 5 stars for Value rating at the price I paid,..to pay full price, I would drop this raing.

Strength:

Easy set-up, very complete owners guide, a BIG improvement over my old B & K pro logic pre-pro and amp components.

Weakness:

No sub-woofer set-up control (white noise).

For far less than the cost to up-grade my old B & K preamp-processer from Dolby Pro Logic to DTS/Dolby Digital I now have a reciever far and away exceeds my expectations. Even in stereo my favorite smooth jazz sounds superior to the B & K. I looked at and listened to Denon 3300 and Marantz 7000 and chose this one. I have no regreats. My wife says she now hears the surround effects and the over all sound is better than the old B & K.

I have done a close comparision of this unit compared to many others. The sound is nice, but not as nice as I expected it to be. The store clerk recommended the HK AVR 65, with the problems reviewers on this site were having didn't happen on the demo unit. I did a close comparision of the 995, and the AVR 65 and now I can say that I think the 65 is a better sounding reciever. The 995 is nice, but in my opinion not as nice as the 65. So I decided to purchase the 65, I brought it home and was scared at the fact that I might've gotton a defective one. Well I didn't get a defective one, units made after the 10000 serial number were good, and what sound the 65 produced. In one word "EXCELLENT". The Yamaha is nice, but in my opinion I think you can do better purchasing a 65, but make sure its after the 100000 serial number mark.
I'll have to give this unit 1 star, as I think you can get better elsewhere, with a Onkyo, or a HK.

I have owned three Yamaha recievers in a row now and as with the previous two, the RX-V995 delivers the purest and cleanest power of any reciever I have listened to. The sound quality is noticibly better than it's competetors and the back panel puts them to shame. I wouldn't touch anything else for the money.

I have the 995 for 3 weeks now. It sounds really great. I wish the remote had more memory.

I have a general question: I have a set of Audes speakers (250Wpower)(AUDES 170AC-025 for main, AUDES 75AC-105 for surround and center) with my Yamaha 995. When I increase the volume level to half of the maximum, playing a CD, the speakers get cut off and when I reduce the volume it comes back on. Is this normal?

I just bought the 995 this weekend from Goodguys. Selling price was $999. I told them that I've seen it online for $795 (which I had, but I don't remember where) and they dropped it in price to $899. Not bad for buying locally. I added on the warranty and I was ready to go.
I was originally running an old Technics and had a Carver AV505 lying around so I wanted a preamp. There aren't very many good home theater preamps at the $1000 range so I ended up looking into receivers instead and was debating between the Sony STR50ES(?) and the 995. Here are the main things that pushed me to buy the 995:
1. (6-ch) External Decoder Input
2. No cheesy front plate (Like on the Sony)
3. Preamp out (if I ever want to pull that 505 out of storage)
4. DD/DTS decoding
5. Overall price/build quality

The only qualms I have, although small as it may be, is the remote. I'm just fiddling around with it and the functionality is OK. It feels cheap to me. The snap plastic cover is the main turnoff.

As per the rest of my home theater?
-- Sony Wega 32" XBR (roommate bought this last week. He want's the 36"XBR now, so this may change)
-- Polk RT400 (MAIN)
-- Cambridge SW (Center) I'm using the really small one.
-- Bose 201 (Rear, but standing on end)
-- and my new purchase of a Pioneer 414!!! =)

I love it. Happy hunting.

I recently purchased this amp and it is awesome. DTS movies sound great. Very good reciever for the money. The only thing i question is if I have my reciever on set to DVD with no other components on and I raise the volume past 5 I can slightly hear the radio from the tuner. Is this normal???

I'm currently auditioning the RX-V995 as a pre-amp in tandem with an Adcom GFA 7500 5 channel amp, DefTech 2002 mains, Polk Monitor 10B surrounds, and DefTech C/L/R 1000B center. My room, though small (16x9x7) is also accoustically accurate and unforgiving.
The RX-V995 handles movies very well, with an overabundance of DPL modes which are "tweakable" to the nth degree. I'm more into music reproduction, and for the life of me I can't even fathom assessing several different AV recievers if you're buying solely to listen to video or DVD. I mean, when the bomb falls and it shakes the house with all 5 speakers blaring, how much better can it sound on a Lexicon DC-2 versus a Radio Shack receiver.? IMO, nut much.

But music reproduction is different. Much more nuanced. And I've really enjoyed
tweaking with the RX-V995's music modes. Like practically every other processor I've heard recently, the defaults sound extremely unnatural. But, after some dialing down, I was able to tailor "Jazz Club" and "Rock Concert" to my liking.
As the BP2002's are also adjustable for bass, so the tweaking possiblities are endless with this set up.

As solid as this unit is in almost every respect, I feel prospective buyers should be advised of its limitations. In no specific order they are:

1. Main speaker balance only accessible from front panel.

2. S/N in surround and music modes when used with an outboard amp is much higher than with internal amps.

3. Add at least $100 to the price of the RX-V995 for a decent universal remote.
The supplied "universal" is the most unwieldly monstrosity I've ever seen.

4. Tuner is not particularly user friendly. Signal strenght meter disappears
immediately after dialing in pre-set...an obvious flaw....

5. Volume knob has no db reference, ala DSP-A1, and is rather difficult to
modulate.

My overall rating

a Casual Listener

I have had my receiver rxv-995 for about a week now. And I really am enjoying it. My only question is, I remember the dolby digital being almost distracting when playing movies. I really liked being distracted, almost leaving me a feeling of being dizzy after listening to some of the special effects. For instance (goldeneye) right before the music starts with tina turner, there is a gunshot that fires, from the front to the rear of the room. I hear the transitoin somewhat, but not as MUCH as a transition that I would like to hear. I am wondering if there is a way to have more of a crisp transition from front to rear, side to side. My listening area is fairly small, but I think that there still could be a bit better transition. Don't get me wrong, I REALLY enjoy this receiver, and I think the remote isn't as bad as most say it is. Get used to it, and in fact, I think its quite user friendly. =]Please email me if you have any info on this. Thanks

Rob D.
