Strength:

Excellent sound, function, and value. Very "smart" receiver.

Weakness:

Tons of tweaking required for that "right" sound. Remote is difficult to understand. I only use it for initial setup, power on/off and volume level.

This receiver was recommended by a friend. I can't complain at all. While the remote is difficult, I can excuse that because the experience is great! If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't change my choice. Great value and great receiver. Yamaha has won a customer for life.

Strength:

Quality ampifier, many video connections (composite and S-Video), several digital audio inputs/outputs (optical/coaxial), pre-outs for all speakers, realistic DSPs modes, easy to operate, second room control, automatic bass control in all modes (DSPs/music/movies DD/DTS) always outputs plenty of bass, flawless Dolby Digital and DTS processing, 6 ch input.

Weakness:

Remote Control

I really love this receiver. I chose it after 4 months of reseach, mainly because it has all features, quality, power and connections I could need for now and future upgrades in my HT, wich is a very important point when deciding what receiver to buy.

I always liked Marantz, but they just didn´t have DTS and other extra features at my target price.
I also tested some Thecnics receivers, but they cannot be compared with Yamaha. They better be compared with AIWAs mini-systems.
I liked so much my RX-V995 that when I ever need to buy another receiver my choice will be Yamaha.

One interesting point: DSPs modes are normally fake and useless, but Yamaha made them very realistic and nice to hear. "Pro-Logic enhanced" is so cool giving a better surround feeling. "Concert Hall" makes classic music come alive! Dolby Digital processing is perfect, no flaws at all.

The remote control is not so good, but I still use it (it just do the job). I am waiting to buy a "Pronto" or a "RC-5000" wich are still too expensive here in Brazil.

Check out Yamaha´s new line of receivers just released (RX-V995a).

Strength:

Everything, sounsd great, enough power, great features, just magnificent

Weakness:

none

This reciever is great. It delivers in the sounds department and in the features department. I tried two recievers, one had great features (denon) but lacked on the sound quality. One had incredible sound quality but lacked in the features department (marantz) I was torn, not knowing which to get, but then i saw the Yamaha and i was in love. It has the great sound of marantz, and the great features of denon, this reciever can not be beat.

Strength:

Superb Dolby Digital Sound. Great build quality.

Weakness:

Limited to 20bit/48khz DACs, "Master quality" DTS not sounding as good due to 20bit limitation. Not so great stereo performance. Lack of 5 channel stereo mode. 6 channel input instead of 7 or 8, so looks to have no EX, ES upgradability. Remote

This is now the third review I've done on this receiver, and the last seeing how I've had it over 2 years, and have seen all strenghs and weaknesses (leading me now to give it 3 stars although I think 4 may be more fair, but I've already given it 5 twice before so this should balance things out). I've been very impressed with this receiver, namely Dolby Digital DVDs, but am soon upgrading to the Denon AVR-4800.
Being impressive in almost every aspect here are the things that are leading me to upgrade receivers:
Firstly and mainly is the lack of master quality 24 bit 96khz DACs (Digital to Analog Conversion on each channel). The 995 is only 20-bit 48 khz. Seeing how the human ear cannot hear frequencys over 48khz loosing the 96khz is no big loss here (although when played in 96khz sound is still said to be more crisp, warmer and top quality. Matter of opinion here, whether you think overkill makes better sound or not, most Audiophiles do believe in this being a big improvement). However not having the 24 bit makes the sound resolution lacking, especially when listening to Master Quality DTS tracks.
Next problem I see is having only 6 channel input and not 7 or 8 channel inputs. Having a 7 or 8 channel input would be a nice quick way to upgrade to Dolby Digital 6.1 EX and DTS 6.1 ES, but the Yamaha, having only 6 channel can't do it (guess they thought another competetor to Dolby or DTS with 5.1 would come along). HOWEVER, 6 channel inputs do have the ability to upgrade to DVD-Audio, so there is light to this dark side.
Another minor problem here is no 5 channel stereo modes, and the quality of stereo sound (EFFECT OFF when playing CDs or Tuner) is not all that great, the sound is just bland and not warm at all.
Last and really least is the remote. Basically any review you read on this receiver will tell you what's wrong here, for me it's nothing big, I just don't like it.

Bottom line, great Dolby Digital receiver capable of DTS, good number of inputs, excellent build quality, some of the DSPs are nice, and I like the enhanced theater modes (mimicing multiple rows of surrounds using only two). If you get this as a good deal; are beginning, or have been in the home theater game for a little while now, go for it. Still a great buy. But Audiophiles look elsewhere for 24/96 and EX/ES capability/upgradability, cause you may not be as impressed with this unit as you would with other receivers like the THX Denons and Pioneer Elites.

Weakness:

None that I can think of

Add me to the long list of delighted owners of this splendid unit. Does everything more than well. Sounds superb in every area. Will never use all of the features that are included with this unit but it doesn't matter; The features that I do use make me a very satisfied owner, and i'm not easy to satisfy. Have compared this unit extensively with similarly priced Onkyo products (TXDS-787, TXDS-696 ) . The Yamaha edges the TXDS787 and easily bests the 696. The sound is utterly natural with authoritative bass and no sense of hardness or strain. I rate this unit very highly.

Strength:

Great sound with CDs, DVDs and Laserdisk. The only audio DSPs I use are the Jazz Club, and Hall. It is the best reciever I have had in many years.

Weakness:

None that I have found, I'm getting used the the reimote.

I have my DVD player hooked up with S video and optical audio, it really sounds better and looks better than it did with the old RCA plugs. The soundstage for music, with DSPs off, is great. It is now being replaced on the market, I got one of the last ones in the store. I figure on getting 10 years use out of it, it has all the features I need. And I have 4 optical I/O left.
