What does the Yamaha RX-v2095 have that that the RX-v995 does not have? And for $500 more is it worth getting the RX-v2095 over the RX-v995?

The 995 is awesome. Nuf said.
This post is all about the remote. Below is information about contacting Yamaha. If you own a 995, do yourself and every other 995 owner a favor. Call AND write to Yamaha and complain about the remote. They may just do something about it. They are already building a list of people who complain about this remote.

I called Yamaha about this piece of SH** remote. They said that they are receiving many negative calls about this downgraded version of the original (The one that comes with the 992, dsp-1 and some others). First off, there is about half the memory for learning, roughly 26-30 commands can be learned.(as oposed to 56 on the other model). This barely covers 2 remotes. I want to replace 5 (TV, Cable box, VCR, CD and DVD). That should not be asking too much from a remote that comes w/ a $1000 receiver. I got through the TV (3 functions), VCR (8 functions) and Cable box (13 functions) and that was it. The 4 functions left weren't worth using.

Then they say you can record up to 13 macros. Well that's BS. If you need at least 2 functions to make a macro, that would be 26 functions (assuming all macros were made up of learned funnctions). That would leave you room for 1 or 2 macros.

Then the last thing is that you can't learn any functions in the 'A' section. This is reserved for Yamaha only products. You can only control Yamaha CD players and Tape decks. What is that about?

I know this is a bit much to ask, but if they went through all the trouble to put this thing together, it wouldn't have taken much more effort to complete the job. The design of the remote is not all that bad if you take the time to get familar with the all the button and functions. A well thought out learning scheme would make this remote very versatile.

Anyway, sorry to babble but contact Yamaha and bitch....

I walked into Uncle's and picked one up for $799. Setup was pretty easy, and it sounds great (and loud). I use it with the Yamaha DVD S700, Cambridge SW Ensemble IV, and a Sony 32inch XBR.What a great value. Dolby Digital is awesome!

I dont have the unit yet but I must give it a 5 for features and value. I bought the HK Avr 65 which annoyed the hell out of me so I returned it...too much hissing/interference....etc. I am waiting for the 995....and let me say I am eagerly waiting... Does anyone have multiple optical dvices attached to it....like DVd, CD, MD./...etc... Just want to know how its working out for everyone.
I got it from Uncles because they are local to me and I am paying 799 for it...sound like a good deal. I know people dont love uncles but I figured since its 3 miles from where I am how bad can it be. Besided I bought and paid on a American Express which automatically doubles the warranty and AMEX also guarantees replacement should the vendor not be able to repair it....not bad...I can take the risk I think.

Any advice on this receiver before I hook it up would be great...but again for what its worth.....the receiver is getting a 5 from me...for value.....and design.

I recently picked up the 995. I have to say that I love this receiver. It replaces an old Pioneer VSX702S Prologic receiver. I left my old speakers in place (Advent Legacy for the fronts, 'mini-advents' for the rears, and the Advent center channel). Not a great speaker system, but useable for now. I added the Paradigm PS1000 sub. DVD is a Panasonic A310. Using MIT5 cables for the mains.
The sound is very clean. No noise, hums and other anomolies. Even straight CD audio sounds better than what I had with the Pioneer, even before hooking up the sub.

When playing Dolby digital DVD, the unit really shines. Separation and effects presentation are superb.

The remote, while better than the 795, could use some improvements. It is very big, and doesn't offer a programmable power button to power controlled devices on and off without using a macro. There are, however, 2 separate power buttons for the TV and VCR. The source select buttons and volume control are day-glo keys.

Everything else performs flawlessly. The bass is rich, and the overall sound is not as "electonic or bright" as most people claim Yamahas to be. But that is a personal preference. The tuner is a vast improvement over my Pioneer. Many people overlook tuner performance. I find the FM sound to be very rich, and separation to be very good for a radio source.

While many listeners don't use the Yamaha DSP effects, I find a few of them to actually be enjoyable. The Rock Concert does bring a level of depth to CD audio. And the Movie modes in Dolby digital do not overpower the real effects of the soundtrack and bring the soundfield alive. These effects really have to be set properly for the listening environment, and for the individual characteristics of the speakers. Some of the DSP modes are silly (Church????), and thankfully they can always be completely bypassed.

I would not hesitate to recommend this unit to anyone looking for a high quality, mid-priced AV receiver. It offers several improvements over the 992 it "replaces", such as DTS (debate pending), 6 channel inputs, and a little more power.

I am trying to decide between the DENON AVR 3200 and the YAMAHA RXV 995 and would greatly appreciate some input. I will use this unit for both music and ht apps. I like the 995,s higher power rating and DTS, but I also like the 5 channel stereo feature in the 3200.
Thanks

I purchased the Yahama RX-V995 after returning a Kenwood 2090 (I hated the remote and both the A room speakers and the digital (optical) inputs were broken). The Yahama was incredibly easy to hook up and get working. I attached the speakers and components and it worked (unlike the Kenwood). I wish the remote had codes for non Yamaha electronics but it can learn so I can still use it as a "universal" remote but it's a little confusing when using it to control my Echostar 4720 DBS receiver and my Panasonic A310 DVD player. I currently have it hooked up to an older pair of digital Kenwood tower speakers and it sounds great! More than enough power to hurt my ears. I like the features and the Dolby Digital inputs and decoding. I can't wait to get more speakers and have a true home theater system. Unfortunately, the wife says finishing the basement must come first.

Well, let me throw my hat into the ring here also for the Yamaha RX-V995. I had bought the RX-V795 when it came out in early November and I was very, very pleased with it. Recently though, I was at my local dealer and took a demo of the 995. Thirty minutes later, we were discussing my trade in of my 795 for the 995. S-Video switching, binding posts all around, programmable remote (not the best though, I actually like the "wheel" remote that came with the 795...YMMV), 100W as opposed to 85W, and multi room capability. Either way you go, the 795 or the 995, the sound will be very pleasing...but for a few bucks more you can get the 995.
