After announcing two weeks ago that Yamaha had released their RX-V995 in Canada, altought in very limited quantities, I could finally get one last friday in Montreal. I bought it at Fillion on Sherbrooke Street for 1285$CA (approx. 875$US). It replaced my two year old Yamaha RX-V590 prologic receiver which served me very well. That's the main reason I am still going with Yamaha.I've been hearing DVDs for five months now and going from prologic to digital really does make a big difference. I've been watching the same DVDs again and now I am hearing sounds I couldn't catch with the prologic setting. The opening scene and the launch (the succeeded one) in Contact are just a few examples. The other major improvment is that I now hear a much deeper and richer sound.

And my first experience with DTS ended with getting addicted to multi-channel stereo recordings. I only own a DTS CD sampler but when you listen to it, you want all your CDs to sound the same. It is a truly unique and sensational experience. It's like listening to music with the headphones on.

The RX-V995 comes with everything the RX-V992 has plus DTS, more power (100W/ch.), more DSP programs that are ajustable, six channel inputs and, I think, a digital output for TAPE/MD.

Finally, I would like to know, for those who own RX-V795, 995, 2095 or DSP-A1, what DSP settings you choose when watching DVDs. You get choices between Sci-fi, Spectacle, General, Adventure, plain DD or DD Enhanced. Thank you.

based on my 992 experience, and being that the internal components are
basically the same on the newer 995, this receiver is kick ass....

Well, I made the jump from a RX-V390 DPL to this 995 and WOW! what a jump in quality and sound. I was considering going with the 795 but for $200(CDN) more I was able to get the 995 (for $1289CDN - ~850US). This receiver is really nice and easy to set up. I had it up and running in minutes. The 70mm DSP modes really add to the movie experience even when playing regular DPL VHS movies. The soundstage is larger and wider when enabled and really sounds like you are in a movie theater. I'm running this amp with Paradigm Studio/20s, Titans, and CC350 speakers. I'm extremely happy with this unit and will be enjoying it for a long time.

I have 2 questions about the RX-V995, which I think I've decided on as my receiver. first of all, anyone know when they'll be available in the US? and second, are there multiple subwoofer inputs? I just got the Carver Home Theater 5.2 Speaker System and I want to make sure they're compatible. thanks for any help, e-mailed or posted, Jon.

I am looking for an authorized dealer for the Yamaha RX-V995. I estimate the cost to be around $750 to $775 delivered. If anyone knows of a reputable mailorder company with good prices, please e-mail me. Thanks for your help.

I decided to go for the 995 versus the RX-V795 (see my comments on 795). Great box. Each video input has both composite and Super VHS inputs and the monitor connection has both outputs. As well, the switch that is on the back of the 795 (to control whether the on-screen menu goes to composite or SVHS for the monitor output) is gone and the box does it automatically. Great ... should have done this on the 795 also! Based upon the video signal source, the on-screen menu goes to the same output source. Makes sense. The sound is great ... and I get a learning MACRO remote back. No more twisting the dial in the dark. I also appreciate the ability to listen to one source and record another. This reciever allows the simplicity in connection that I wanted so that my son can use it without going to the back.
I did notice something "funny" on the FM tuner. I am connected to cable FM for my stations and if I am on one station and get all the bars on my tuner signal strength meter .... I can put my hand on top of the box (front left) and see some of the signal bars disappear. No impact on the sound ... just find this curious.

I have 6 ohm main speakers ... and I see that if I wish to have A and B speakers I need to replace the main speakers with some that are a minimum of 8 ohms. However if I only have A speakers, I require that they be greater than 4 ohms impedence. Can they not do better than this?? Also, I believe that the user manual could use some work ... the reciever has many features and the manual does not do it justice. Picky picky picky

In my humble opinion, spending a few hundred more ($150-200) on top of the 795 gives a much better box ... more for the future. All the other features of the 795 are present on this box with enhancements ... valued added enhancement to me. Yes, I am happy with it

Well, i FINALLY got a hold of one of these bad boys, i just happenedto call good guys (tustin, southern Cali), and they had two in stock that came on the truck that day, and one was the display model. This in-store price was $999, but i got him down to about $860, so i didnt get TOO ripped off.

Set-up of this unit was a breeze, the biggest problem i had was remembering to set my DVD player to AC-3 output, instead of the lame pro-logic.

Let me tell you, this receiver KICKS ASS! the sound is clean, with hardly any background noise at all... i am VERY impressed, and this receiver, in my view, has lived up to all expectation and is worth every penny.

Currently i have it running into some take5's and an e:XL-S10 sub, none of which have been broken in yet. gonna get some mission impossible going tonight to help with that. But all in all, this is an amazing receiver. I just listen to the dolby digital trailers over and over, i cant get past them! hahaah

I have had the Yamaha RX-V 995 for about a week now and have become more impressed with it every day. It has both the ease of use for a novice and the features an audiophile loves. The remote is big and has some complex featuressuch as the macros(multiple functions with the push of one button), but it will let you do everything from the comfort of the couch.
At first I thought the DSP's would be a feature I wouldn't be using to much, but the parameters can be adjusted to ones personal preference with the on screen menu.
It's a stereo receiver that performs better than any other for it's price(I got it for $899 at Good Guys, an authorized dealer for warranty purposes). For Home Theater it's awesome. With all the S-Video inputs, DTS, future decoder inputs it should serve me well for many years. Five stars all the way especially for value.

I just purchased this unit last week.It replaced my rx-v992.Although this reciever has a lot more features,I don't think its louder than the 992.I also noticed than when playing dvd's through my sony s-300,I dont hear the difference between the different sound fields,e.g. "sci-fi,specticle,adventure and general".Does anyone else have the same problem or is the reciever defective?Other than that,it's a great sounding unit.It has all the feature i'd ever want and its fairly future proof. As for the remote,it's a little too big to use and hard to understand when you're trying to teach it and using the macro feature.
If anyone have the same experence with the sound fields or I'm doing something wrong, email me or post it here.
