This receiver just came out and is an updated version of the RXV-992. It has the same retail price as the 992 but offers more power (100 watts X 5 as opposed to the RXV 992 80 watts X 5) it offers DD and DTS and 6 channel inputs. It also has a more advanced DSP processor than the RXV 992, allowing more dsp modes, adjustments, etc. The DAC's are also improved to boot. This receiver makes for an outstading piece of hardware that can be had for only $799. At this price, there is no competition !!!

Strength:

SOUND QUALITY,EASE OF USE,LOOKS,CONNECTION OPTIONS

Weakness:

NONE AS OF YET

I UPGRADED TO THE 995 TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CONNECTION
POSSIBILITIES. I HAVE NOT BEEN DISAPPOINTED. THIS RECEIVER
IS GREAT. THE REMOTE LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED, SO I GOT A H.T.M. SL-9000. SOLVED ALL MY PROBLEMS. I HIGHLY RECOMEND
THIS TO ANYONE IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT. IT PROBABLY CAN BE FOUND CHEAP NOW THAT THE RX-V1000 IS OUT.

MY SYSTEM CONSISTS OF:
YAMAHA RX-V995 RECEIVER
CDM-900 111 DISC CHANGER
CDR-S1000 CD RECORDER
SONY DVD-360 DVD PLAYER
HI-FI VCR
BOSTON ACOUSTICS VR-965 MAINS
VR-910 CENTER
CR-7 SURROUNDS

Strength:

Great sound, easy to hook up

Weakness:

Used up all the inputs already, Only one Coax Digital input

I got this thing when they first came out, (see how much I payed for it) and have used it a lot. I realy have been happy with it.

One feature that I wish it had was to be able to auto set a max DB volume so that after turing it up for speech, I don't loose my eardrums in action sequences..... But this is more a problem with certain DVD's than the Reciver's fault.

With how cheap they are now, I wonder if I should get another one just to get more inputs.. (like I said I used all mine up already, and I am sure it would daisy chain alright with the Vid-Preamp outs of one going to the other)

Strength:

Sound processing, custom sound fields, ease of use, remote control.

Weakness:

None.

The RX-V995 is an excellent A/V receiver that has many features which need to be explored in detail. One of these features that blew me away was the DSP (Dynamic Sound Processing) fields buit into it. You can set room size, liveness, center channel delay and other variables to your liking. We have a relatively small living room and the sound was not to my taste with standard DSP settings. Once I learned changing those and what they meant, the sound quality improved tremendously. Many other manufacturers talk about 4 way stereo, this receiver has effects such as Concert Hall, Rock Concert, Disco etc. which uses the main channel as well as the surround speakers (4 channel sound). When I listen to live recording of rock concerts, the sound is just like at a gig. I checked other receivers by Marantz, Sony, Pioneer Elite which were much pricier than this one, and they did not sound better.

Excellent Value, Excellent Value,

Not Upgradeable, Remote

Excellent Receiver. Componet switching would be nice. I wish it had better sub control. I'm not sure about the power handling, I use the main outs to a Hafler XL-600 amp that drvies Infinity Kappa 8's. I also use a Velodyne ULD-15 sub (not very tight, but plenty of shake and rattle) I use this receiver in a rather small room, I'm a tough sell on the audio-digital-enhancements Yamaha provides. For movies I set it on the standard Dolby Digital or DTS surround modes, for audio I still prefer plain Jane stereo, the Jazz, Rock, Hall, etc. is still too artificial for me. I know Yamaha has spent more time than any other trying to pysco-acoustily reproduce music at different venues. But, it's still sounds like "canned digital sound". If anyone reading this has found custom settings they can't live without (for movies or audio) let me know. I haven't invested the time to tweak cinema settings.

Strength:

Overall good quality sound and ease of use

Weakness:

Problem with volume control. Need to continually adjust volume on DVD and cable movies for the highs and lows.

Need some assistance with instruction on how to set the RX-V995 so that the highs and lows during a DVD movie do not require manual adjustment. It is difficult to adjust the volume up when actors are speaking in normal tones then, during the action scenes, requires adjusting the volume down to save the walls of the house (and the marriage).

Strength:

Great sound w/movies and music. Lots of power.

Weakness:

None found as of yet

Traded in my Denon 1801 when this one went on sale for $500. So far it has been great. Don't understand why people don't like the remote. I programmed it to work all my components. Love it, could use lighted buttons though.
I am totally convinced that movies sound better than with the Denon. I have been doing a lot of music listening with both my Pioneer laser disc player and my Zenith (yeah don't laugh) DVD player and my DTS satellite music channels. Some music sounds great some sounds not so great to say the least. Which leads me to believe that some of the bad reviews for music listening are not thorough. It is not the type of music that sounds good but the recording itself. Most CDs really are not the best quality. Can't wai for DVD audio.
Tried most of my DVD's and Laser Discs and I can honestly say the sound is much improved, for once I have to turn the rear channels down and I don't have to turn up the bass knob. I can actually use the tone bypass switch. Nothing to do with the sub, because I bypass that and still get great sound. The imaging is excellent. Can't believe what I was missing all this time, but I knew I was not as happy as I am with this receiver.
I run this system through a pair of POLK RT16 towers (non powered w/dual 7.5" drivers and one 1" tweeter. Also a newly purchased KLH 10" 120W subwoofer. All I can say is I hope the neighbors don't start complaining.
Not sure of the model on the center channel but is a Boston Acoustic dual 4" drivers no tweeter. The surrounds are a pair if B.I.C America's that are part of a trilogy set. Some day i will try to adapt the passive sub into the rear channel to see what if anything changes.
