I have a good deal of experience with this unit since I have owned it for about 6 months before upgrading to the DSP A1.The 992 has great sound in DD and DPL. Some of the DSP modes are good but they don't offer a great deal of adjustments. Only delay and volume can be changed.
This unit has enough power for medium sized rooms and has plenty of inputs and s-video inputs.
The great deal about this unit is the price has dropped to $599.
For that price, it makes it a super deal !!!
email me if you have any questions or want to know where to get it at this price.

First of all let me describe my system:Yamaha RXV-992 paired with definitive technology pro cinema series,Sony S300 DVD,RCA VCR, Mitsubishi 55601 55" rear projection TV,and full view satellite system with 4DTV digicipher technology.I purchsed this reciever for a steal at $800 from a local store replacing a Kenwood rated at 100W x 5. For those of you complaining about the power,I can tell you that the output from the RXV-992 is simply oustanding in the above system configuration, and beat tha daylights out the Kenwood that I had. There are many variables to power such as speaker sensitivity, powered subwoofers, impedance, and the quality of the Amps. You can't just look at numbers.I can't see how any one can expect to maximum performance out of a reciever without using a powered sub in their configuration to alleviate the strain of having most reciever power going to reproduce low base effects!! I compared my configuration to a similar setup at a local store with a $3000 Denon and I cannot tell any observed step up in sound quality. One word to describe the DD and DPL performance on thr RXV-992:impressive . Music reproduction is very good. the FM signal quality from local stations is above average.

I just upgraded to the 992 from the Technics SA-AX 720. Oh my God what a difference. The 720 is a piece of doggy doo doo compared to the 992. I would avoid Technics like the plague!

This receiver is a real winner. It has fabulous AC-3 and Pro-Logic modes. TheDSP section may not be everyone's cup of tea for straight music listening, but
it does enhance surround-sound performance.

The amp section is powerful and dynamic and has more than enough power to take
care of today's movie soundtracks. The amp is also clean and detailed,
undoubtedly sharing components with its big brother the DSP-A1 (which Home
Theatre magazine rated as the best Integrated Amp they had ever heard.)

Yamaha has proven they are leaders in the field of DSP and AV amps and
receivers, and the RX-V992 definately outperforms the competition from Sony,
Pioneer, JVC and Technics.

I have had a chance to listen to the Yamaha 992 for an extensive period, in direct comparison to the Denon AVR3200. I am not bias towards any of these companies and think they both offer excellent products.
However, my ears tell no lies and when both receivers pumped various kinds of music(rock, soft vocals, dance, techo, etc) I notice the Denon 3200 sounded much more fuller and clearer than the Yamaha 992. The difference wouldn't be so prominent if those two receivers weren't side by side. Indeed, the Denon receiver gave a warmer quality to the music while the Yamaha sounded electronic and cold. In case you're wondering, the speakers were NHT 2.5i, an awesome and revealing pair of high-end speakers that won't force you to take out a loan.

Like I said, I'm not partial to any and this is my honest opinion, for what it's worth. I haven't done a side to side comparison b/w the 2092 w/ the 3200. Supposedly, the 2092 has a more powerful amp and better electronics. But, that's another review. 3 stars for the 992.

I agree with Jim about how bad this receiver sounds. My PSB's Stratus Mini's really sounded awful hooked up to the $850.00 Yamaha 992. There was no liveliness to the sound at all. Bass and lower midrange were muddy and the highs seemed muted, even after I hooked up my sub (Boston VR-500). Could be with bright speakers like the Boston CR line, Their new VR Powered speakers or the Klipsches, the 992 may be just the thing, but I need something more transparent. I even tried "direct-mode" stereo with the same results.
I've yet to try the Denon stuff, and plan to check out the Sherwood Newcastle R-925. My Sherwood 5050R actually sounds very good when using my sub. Very clear and fairly detailed for something I picked up for $150.00 mail-order.

I've had positive experiences with 2 different Yamaha pre-amps and they sounded nothing like the murky 992.The DSP surround modes seemed mostly useless as well, except for the Pro-Logic which was very detailed and ambient.

Changing effect modes also required a reset of channel levels, which was a real pain. It did remember your delay settings though.

Strength:

Powerfull sound, accuracy and detail, value value value, good looks, multitude of functions, two sub out, second room out, two centre chanells conections, back lit remote, speakers a+b.

Weakness:

It doesnt wipe your ars! But it does everything els.

An absalute bargain, with brilliant sound and an awsome array of effects including 70mm movie theatre, dd enhanced, rock, jazz, hall, and heaps more.

Most of all, this processor lifts you into the higher end of movie home theatre sound, and once you have it you will never pay to sit in an vovie theatre again! Even my local pic theatre spent millions on there sound and with such a big erea to cover it doesnt match my RXV-992 when it comes to punch and detail! Yamaha manages to throw its sound effects around the room at a quick and rapid rate but still retaining a very respectable smoothness in its actions.

You will need five good speekers to obtain full potential from the 992 and a healthy sub will ensure you top range sound from all sourses, the RXV-992 will despose of cheep speekers at a rapid pace so don't waist your money on cheep speakers, do it right the first time.

This is a full monte amp with full monte sound, and was a bargain at new prices, so if you get one second hand its a steel! Damn good AV Reciever and have no intentions getting rid of it for a long time, and allso had no probs with this unit.

Strength:

Value for money, great sound, 5 ch pre-out

Weakness:

no component inputs, reliability, hard-to-use remote control

I bought X992 sometime in 1997, replacing my old Dolby-logic only RXV352 (I think that was the model number). Anyway, I could tell right away the difference in sound quality, especially the much tighter bass. Of course, X992 has 80W/ch comparing to 50W/ch of my old receiver. I dont care much about DTS, so this is working fine for my HT.
After 3 years, my remote control is not working properly anymore. Each time a botton is pressed, it would take 2-3 seconds before the remote would send out the signal to receiver. Must be the processor in the remote that is malfunction. Also, each time I turn on the receive, there will be a loud "pop" from my center speaker. Don't know what is wrong with it. I am going to put in a 5-channel amp in the very near future, so the Yamaha will used exclusively as a pre-amp.
