I agree with Jim about how bad this receiver sounds. My PSB's Stratus Mini's really sounded awful hooked up to the $850.00 Yamaha 992. There was no liveliness to the sound at all. Bass and lower midrange were muddy and the highs seemed muted, even after I hooked up my sub (Boston VR-500). Could be with bright speakers like the Boston CR line, Their new VR Powered speakers or the Klipsches, the 992 may be just the thing, but I need something more transparent. I even tried "direct-mode" stereo with the same results. |

Strength:
Value for money, great sound, 5 ch pre-out
Weakness:
no component inputs, reliability, hard-to-use remote control I bought X992 sometime in 1997, replacing my old Dolby-logic only RXV352 (I think that was the model number). Anyway, I could tell right away the difference in sound quality, especially the much tighter bass. Of course, X992 has 80W/ch comparing to 50W/ch of my old receiver. I dont care much about DTS, so this is working fine for my HT. Similar Products Used: Yamaha RX-V352 |

Mine overheats with the volume not even close to halfway. The fan never even turns on. Yamaha says there is nothing wrong with the fan. An authorized repair shop (Meltons) says there is nothing wrong with my Amp. HiFi Buys won't take it back on a trade-in. |

Strength:
inputs, multi-room feature, value
Weakness:
too few digital inputs I replaced an old Pioneer pro-logic receiver with this, and the difference is amazing. My Pioneer suffered from poor sound at low volume -- There wasn't enough granularity at low volumes (it was always either too quiet or too loud, and there was no setting in between), and it didn't put out any signal to the subwoofer. Similar Products Used: pioneer pro-logic |

Overall Excellent product. It currently costs about what the RXV-795 costs and although it doesn't have DTS the beauty is that this unit has an all S-Video switching system for your LD, DVD, Sattelite, etc. Sound quality from AC-3 on movies is phenomenal, the unit has a very good processor. Excellent value for home theater. |

Way too bright! Had borrowed the unit for a weekend to listen. Turned the volume almost halfway. I had to turn it back down because it actually started to hurt(Like needles piercing your ears). I'll stick with my Nakamichi AV-10. A much superior receiver. Give it a try! |

I recently decided that it was time to put together a home theater system, and I bought a JCV 884 receiver... bad move. After fighting with it for some time |

Strength:
Great amp with lots of features. Powerfull and clean, excellent DSP features. Better than the Sony ES AV amps.
Weakness:
Needs more digital optical inputs. Clean, powerfull amp with lots of features. Great for movies. An AV receiver that is better for movies than music but nothing to balk at. Similar Products Used: Onkyo and the newer Yamaha RXV-995. |
