Strength:

27 dsp with bass, treble, mid controls, 110 watts x 5

Weakness:

remote, Tons of hisss, not very clear sound, no 5 channel stereo, Gets very hot

This receiver has lots of dsp soundfields and tone, treble, midrange controls. The BIG drawback was the amount of hiss produced when in digital or analog hook up!! When I hooked it up with my pioneer dvd player It sounded horrible. Although the soundfileds helped, the amount of hiss was very degrading to the sound. As I continued to play with all the features I also noticed that when I played with the volume on the remote a sharp sound was being produced from the left surround speaker. I was very disappionted with sony. Later I returned the unit and got Pioneer's vsx-d709s and I can't even begin the difference in clarity. Although sony's has more power and lots of soundfields, pioneer has 5 channel stereo and better quality watts.

Strength:

Great sound. Easy to use (wife uses it). Loud.

Weakness:

Remote could be better. I wish it came with the Sony RM-AV2100. The remote works and is cool but lacks a few buttons so that it cannot truely replace all the other remotes (namely the dvd remote).

I really like this receiver for the price. The key word is price. I find it funny that so many audio snobs have posted a message giving this receiver a bad review and then have they spent a thousand dollars and got a better receiver (duh). This receiver is for someone that wants great sound for dvds and cds with their family room. I have had many a family member and friend over to watch a movie and they leave the house praising this receiver. This receiver is not for the uptight art buying, martini drinking, macintosh using, cigar smoking, home theatre having people that insist on buying receivers at Circuit City and thinking they will be happy. If you can afford a home theatre (or think you can) then what are you doing in Circuit City anyway. True audio snobs turn to brands like Parasound, Bang & Olufsen, and Marantz for their hardware. These brands are not at The Good Guys and Circuit City. Please quit purchasing stereo equipment under a thousand dollars and comparing it to equipment that costs over a thousand dollars. Thank you.

Overall, this is a good receiver. There are lots of sound fields and Audio/Video inputs. The remote is fairly easy to setup and use. However, there is one annoying problem that I encounted. Whenever I turn on the receiver, there is a small pop emitting from my Infinity BU-150 subwoofer. My brother had the same receiver and is connected to a Sony subwoofer. His also does the same thing. I have contacted Sony and reported the problem but they have not able provide any solutions.

I have been using this reciever for more than a month now. I have no hissing, humming or popping, the sound is crystal clear. I use Infinity RS 5's, RS 4's,a CC3,and a BU120 sub and all I can say is that THIS BABY ROCKS!!! I will agree that there are better recievers but for under $500 dollars you won't find one, not with the power, hookups or looks. I am using 2 s-video inputs and have no video bleed as one person reported. for the buck this one is hard to beat. If your sitting on the fence now is the time to get off. Five stars Because I like quality at a resonabble price. I know many people do not like the remote, I cant comment because I don't use it. I use Home Producer AV 8 radio remote. Best $90 I spent at Best Buy This baby controls it all with lighted buttons/backlit lcd screen

Strength:

Sharp looks, POWER!!!, Awesome Digital 5.1 and dts, cool remote (not that complex to work), sound fields

Weakness:

None that I have noticed yet.

I had a SONY STR-D990 for about 8 years. It was a top of the line (Non-ES)dolby pro-logic receiver that never gave me a single problem, ever. So in 1999 I purchased an STR-DE835 on Ebay. Loved it so much, 6 months later I upgraded to the STR-DE935. Shouldn't have. The 835 was just as wonderful as the 935 and I really did not need the extra 10watts per channel.

I was so in awe with the performance of this receiver, that I decided to transition all my audio conponents to SONY/Bose. I did that and purchased Bose AM Surround System, SONY Hi-Fi VCR, SONY ES Cassette Deck, ES 5-disk CD, Mini-Disk and DVD Player and a new SONY 27" to replace my 1991 model.

I couldn't be happier with this setup...most of which was purchased on Ebay at substantial discounts. Though my wife doesn't like LOUD music or movies...when she is gone, my son and I crank it up. The battle scenes in Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan (in DTS) are just incredible...better than the theater, in my opinion.

The sound field selections are a bit complex. So I just sampled a bunch of them and selected LIVE HOUSE for music
I am resisting the urge to upgrade this receiver to a DB or ES line model...I don not know how anything could be more powerfully crisp and clean on music and video/DVD audio.

The myrid of sound fields are a bit complex and cumbersome so I just sampled all of them and chose LIVE HOUSE for music, Cinema B for the VCR and Auto Format Decode for DVD's. The remote is a little slow (because it is a two-way remote) but I like the way it operates all my equipment.

Strength:

Sony quality
Superb sound
Amazing number of different "sound fields" can be created
Great input flexibility
Supports Dolby digital AND the new DTS

Weakness:

Active sub woofer is absolutely requied

The 935 is a very "subtle" amplifier. The degree to which tonal qualities and speaker"voicing" can be set up is absolutely amazing. You need to spend quite a bit of time reading and "playing" with settings to begin to understand just how good this amp really is- More than enough output power-no problem seen whith any "noise" from rear channels, hissing or poping. The amp is totally quiet when no input is present even at high power.
The DVD attached to this amp is a Sony 7700 and the combination of these two units is incredible.
The two "problems" I uncovered were:
1. This amps bass output is not good (unacceptable) without an added component-an active sub-woofer. With this applied the "thunderous "bottom" becomes available from the amps subwoofer out. Note that you MUST use an "active" sub woofer
as the input signal is only 2V max. this component adds 200 to 300 bucks to the total system cost.
2. There is no Digital coaxial cable or Toscable (fiber optic) cable supplied with EITHER the amp or the DVD7700.
you buy this separately at an additional cost of 30 to 50 bucks (another "hidden cost).
The other major plus for this amp is the excellent sound quality at very low power. you can actually watch a Dolby DVD movie late at night with the amp turned down and still
get that "movie theater" feeling without
the telephone calls from the neighbors. The only reason I gave it a lower "value rating (4)" is that the actual cost is 200 to 300 bucks higher than the amp cost because you MUST apply an active subwoofer.

I have only had this model for a few days, but I love it. Concerning complaints from others that are listed here: Hissing at 0 - I only have a small hiss from my Hitachi center speakers-No hiss from any other speakers (Sony, Hitachi & Yamaha speakers.) Excessive heat-There is a hot spot on the very top center, but I don't believe it is excessive. Ease of setup-requires some reading and experimenting. Lot's of choices for sound - maybe too many. I hate the remote though. Got this model from Sears - they priced matched CC. Excellent price for 3 year in shop repair. Also have Sony s330 DVD player - excellent picture and 5.1 with receiver. Also vhs - slv199 hf. Still deciding about it. Can't beat quality for the dollar on the 935.
