Weakness:

Poor sound and fuzz comming out of all speakers

I just want to say how displeased I am with my STR-DE935 receiver. I have had the receiver since late August. I purchased the receiver at a local Best Buy store. I have exchanged the receiver 3 times and I have found nothing but the same problems. This receiver is the biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased. I have had all kind of static problems coming from the front and rear speakers. Also when I increase or decrease the volume I can hear the wine of the motor that turns the volume dial on the receiver come through the speakers. Also I can hear what I call sound bleeding when I hear the CD player (Sony CDPCE335) playing through the Video 1 when selected and the CD player is not hooked to Video1. I am not sure that it can not be repaired because it is hard to believe that after having three of these receiver that this must be the way that this receiver was designed. I really like Sony products and I was Happy with my last Sony Pro Logic receiver which I only replaced with the STR-DE935 because I wanted to enjoy the befits of Dolby Digital. I wish I had purchased a diffrent reciver but i guess I am stuck with this one for now. Stay away from this reciver at all cost.

Sound Quality and Power, Price, Design and Inputs/Outputs

Weakness:

Weight.

I have been reading some comments here and in some magazines, and I decided to buy a different Receiver, other that this Sony. That was not a great idea, I was a dumb and had to return those two ones, and after a friend of mine bought his Sony, I decided to give it a try.

I bought it from a store here in Boston area and I paid 435.00 Not too cheap as I saw at some internet online shops, but I did need it and I bought.

After I bought I felt so amazing becuase of his Digital Inputs, and power. These two things really got me.

My equipments are:

Sony STR DE 935 A/V Receiver
Sony DVD S700 DVD player *
JVC HR S9600 SVHS VCR
Denon DCM 370 CD player with HDCD *
Yamaha NS 1738 Tower Speakers with Subwoofer
Yamaha AC 143 Center Speakers
Yamaha SW 500 Powered Subwoofer
Sony MDS JB920 Mini Disc Player and Recorder *
Phillips CDR 950 CD Recorder *

* All connected to Monster Optic and Coaxial Cables. The others connected with Monster Analog cables.

Talking about movies and shows, I felt amazed watching Eagles - Heel freezes over DTS DVD. The sound, image was so clear, so nice that I didn't want to stop watching. So for those who want to buy a Receiver, you could put your money because it is totally worth.

If anyone still has got any doubt, feel free to e-mail me.

Good luck on your purchases...

Flavio

Strength:

Power rating, remote (when set up right), sound fields

Weakness:

'virtual' sound fields (why?), user interface (front panel controls and remote), backplane restrictions, no tape monitor (to speak of), manual

Setup: Tried the recommended method of hooking video/audio from all sources (DVD, VCR, Dish Net, Sony TV) but finally gave up. When I had the DVD player working, I couldn't see the VCR and vice versa. I couldn't figure out the record path from the TV to the VCR (that used to be straightforward). So, I went back to the hooking everything but the DVD player through the TV and having only one connection to the 935. Seems a waste. Also, I have an Audio Control C-101 to compensate for strange acoustic enclosures (I like to experiment with sound) and I can't seem to connect it through the tape source/record side. It registers but I can't equalize back through the tape in. Probably my brain.

Finally, when I had it working (use mostly Infinity speakers for center, rear and active sub), set them to 'large' or 'on' I was able to get the desired effects. The sound fields are great but there are many 'virtual' ones for those folks who don't have rear speakers.

The interface on the front control panel is horrible, disparate functions that allow no forgiveness and a menu structure that is bites at your short term memory. For instance, EQ settings are difficult to set....the manual (typical for Sony) describes '21' different octaves but doesn't describe whether you have control over each or the range or what. And according to them you can customize them by sound field....But why would I do that? I'm thinking it took me an hour to hack my way through shuttle-left arrow-enter-left arrow-shuttle-right arrow-footpedal-talasman-elbow-enter to create ONE sound field. Once I have the sound as flat as I can get I don't need to touch it (unless I move my furniture around during the show).

Use:

I like virtual dimension 'rear' or something with decompression OFF. I use the DVD player as my CD player as well but don't use sound fields for that...two channel stereo is fine (considering I've created speaker objects that look like large pipes from a pipe organ)

I don't have the delays using the remote as reported below..my aim is pretty good though :) I love I/O power and Standby controls at the top. Who thinks this stuff up?
There are also many other interfaces out there that would have worked better than this. I recommend maybe prototyping on customers a couple times before shipping.

I can only give this three stars and that's a stretch. Powers great but if you can't even turn it on (or off) what good is it. Remember, Sony is the master of the blinking 12 (see VCR).

Strength:

Good value for the money

Weakness:

Remote is nice it has great features but takes time to fully learn how to extreact all that it can do. Instruction manual difficult to understand.

I am not an expert in Home Teather receiver and this is my first digital receiver I have had Dolby Pro Logic for over 4 years and my focus will be on those features for which they always charge you extra, more than the specifics on decoders and how they respond to the different movies or concerts characteristics. That I will leave to the experts.
Good value for the money,S video connections, one coaxial and three optical main speakers connectors can use banana and spades, many sound fields, bass, midrange and treble adjustment work real nice. Nice construction, if you have other Sony products you can link them to the receiver and remote. Overall if you pay $500 or less for it is a good buy,I am pleased with the purchase and what I am hearing so far when I sit to enjoy any DVD.

Strength:

EQ controls, good display & interface, sound fields, 110W x 5.

Weakness:

Lack of s-video input for sat/TV. Remote is slow & poorly thought out. No banana jacks for center & rear channels.

For the price I would have expected banana jacks on all the speaker outputs, but for some reason Sony cheaped out and only provides them for the front speakers. And for some reason it lacks an s-video input for sat/tv which I find odd. The newer 2000 (STR-DE945) model fixed this oversight however. My biggest beef is with the remote, which is slow to respond and turns off to quickly. And the logic for some of the controls eludes me, like putting the bass boost on the outside, and the eq on/off inside. I would be willing to overlook these problem if only it provided more control over the amp. Like being able to change EQ settings and subwoofer volume from the listening position would be a HUGE improvement. I do like the display though, which is clear and informative. A few of the cinema soundfields seem pretty good, thought I don't use them much now that I have good speakers (Mirage OM-8, OM-C2, OM-R2). Being able to adjust the EQ (variable freq. bass/mid/treble) settings for each channel (center/front/rear) and having it remember different settings for each sound mode is a plus, especially those with picky ears. This can be a curse though as well. Once you start fiddling with the EQ, it can be really hard to find just the right adjustments.

Overall, I feel this product is only so so. If it wasn't for those flaws I mentioned, I'd would have said it was above average. I also can't help but wonder if I couldn't have gotten something better for the price (too much!) I paid.

Strength:

High power, very flexible, DTS, tons of soundfields, remote is very flexible, nice Digital Decoding blue light.

Weakness:

Remote, High THD .8% other are .05% or less!

I bought this receiver as my first Home Theatre amp. It really is great for the features that it packs. The remote is cool in that it is very flexible for operating other equipment and useful for changing soundfields, but it sucks for just about everyting else, as it is difficult to get it to turn on the amp on occassions and it is very difficult to tailor levels from it. Also, it has pretty high THD numbers which were really not that big of a deal to me until the day I heard the ES. Before, I used to have to put the subtitles on for Saving Private Ryan DTS, but on the ES, I could hear it very clearly...WITH THE SAME EXACT SPEAKERS!!! I guess that's why the ES is 3X more expensive! This amp is good for those who are not audiophiles or audiophiles in training. To me, it was a step on my way to cleaner, smoother sound. This amp just tries too hard to get everything out to the listener, that it creates a jumble of sounds that sound ok, but it's not like the on/off clarity of the ES. Basically, the speakers are off until somebody talks and when they are done, the turn of again. It's that clear. To sum up, this is a good amp for the money, but know that there are FAR better amps available, so if you want to go HiFi, use this as a stepping stone to get the amp that you REALLY want!
I'll give it 5 stars for the value that you get with this receiver and 5 stars for overall value since this model has been discontinued and you can pick it up dirt cheap and retain all the things that made it a good value in this first place. For the money, I think this is a solid receiver that is worth the money if all you're looking for is a solid home theatre.

Strength:

Like the ins/outs options. Remote is nice since I have used it a while and have figured a few things out.

Weakness:

Had heard of right rear channel noise. Mine has this but only occurs when raising or lowering volume. No noise otherwise.

Am overall pleased and with the time I've had it. Would like to see remote which would handle more of the features of my components.

I must say that from the moment I got this all hooked up to my mini-disc, DVD, speakers, t.v., CD, record player, VCR, etc. - you get the idea, I've had nothing but great satisfaction from this unit. Granted, I'm still trying to get used to the remote, and have easily figured out how to get it to turn off my t.v. everytime instead of turning on the receiver, but other than the remote, this unit is heavenly. I recommend it for the person who needs something that holds everything, doesn't have a lot of cash, and still wants the options and the sounds of a higher end unit.
