Strength:

Power, construction, remote

Weakness:

the lack of s-video, though not really

I've had the old Onkyo 575 for about 4 months. It's a great little machine. Like everyone's mentioned it is a great value. For all of you out there complaining about the lack of s-video, any knowledgeable videophile will tell you that s-video makes an infintesimal difference in picture quality. You'll only see a difference if you have a SVHS machine, and how many of us will fork over the Cash for that when there's DVD. S-video is an CE industry buzz word, nothing more, Onkyo leaving this feature off allowed for the great price everyone loves. Here's a few tips for all those HISS-o-phobes, set the speaker setting from LARGE to SMALL no matter what the size. This functions to remove some of the needless bass from your front speakers to your subwoofer, thus allowing more subtle sounds to not be drown out. Secondly for those complaining about the lack of power and again the hiss, set your sound to absolute and calibrate ALL your speakers with a sound meter. It will balance your DD and DTS as well as your 5ch stereo. If these things are done trust me your 575 will preform like mine- FLAWLESSLY and clean. It's capable of so much more if set properly. My machine compliments my Mirage/Infinty speaker greatly. I would suggest it to anyone. Audiophile, causual listener, movie buff, housewife... Anyone.

Strength:

Great clear sound, Quality construction, DTS, Lucasfilm Cinema Re-EQ, Learning Remote, usefull DPS's

Weakness:

none

I have the receiver now for 2 weeks and I'm still very impressed. Wonderful clear sound in stereo mode (with no noticeable hiss) and usefull DSP's (not so much as Sony and Yamaha offers, but you won't need them all). I can't say how it works in Dolby Digital and DTS because I have no DVD-Player at this time, but it must even sound better than Dolby Pro Logic, and that sounds already great.
FM and Phono sounds also excellent. Remote does work well, especially the joystick-option.

The receiver looks quite good and makes a very solid and qualitative impression. In Austria you get this receiver with 3 years warranty, which underlines the quality aspect. The europe model has also s-video inputs (in conrast to the us-model).

I recommend this receiver to everybody who is interested in awesome stereo sound with the option to get also great home cinema sound.
5 stars for the value and also 5 stars overall (refering to the price range).

I had bought a Sony STR-DE835 a couple month earlier and was relatively satisfied with it. But when I heard my father-in-law talking about this Onkyo, I immediately became interested. He is a man of great knowledge, researches products before he buys, ask questions, and only buys things of premium quality.I found one online at $399.99 at EtronicsOnline. I instantly purchased it and had it delivered next day air.

I opened the box and this thing was more beautiful than it had been in the store before. I took it home, hooked it up and noticed an immediate difference in sound quality and presentation.

First of all, this thing is built like a tank, very sturdy construction and a very simple front panel design. There is not one button on the front or on the remote that the receiver does not need or use. They don't bother with the remote controlled volume knob, which is something that is easily breakable. The volume level is shown on the display for more precise volume control.

The high current 70 watts a channel blew away the 100 watts of the Sony I had before. Very smooth, and extremely accurate decoding of Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 5.1. The Wide Range Amplifier Technology that Onkyo pioneered delivers clear crisp ear rattling highs and a mid range I could drool over. I could hook everything up to it, it has plenty of digital inputs, and they are assignable. So you don't have to hookup your Playstation 2 to the Mini Disc input for the digital sound. The receiver is attractive looking, the remote is excellent, It learned all 5 of my other remotes without a problem, and I programmed macros into it that turn on the entire system ready for a movie with the push of two buttons. The receiver does not overheat, it only ever gets mildly warm (without a fan).

Even with the volume level up to 50 (very loud) while watching Matrix. And in silence, there is not a peep out of the speakers like others had described. The standard video inputs are excellent, there is no noticeable noise pickup from using the video switching. Having banana plugs for the front 3 speakers is excellent, although it lacks them for the rears.

It does lack S-video inputs, which would be nice, the rear speakers have spring jacks, and the subwoofer pre-out has a cutoff of 80Hz which is not that great, but can be avoided by increasing the volume on your subwoofer's internal crossover.

The receiver will work in any room, it is not an eyesore. It is my belief that it will last a very long time and will never disappoint. Best of all it is affordable, even at a retail price of $500 it is a great deal for what your getting. This is an audiophile grade product and can be enjoyed by audiophiles and beginners that expect sound quality and ease of use.

All in all, this receiver is the best out there under $500, and even outperforms those above $500.

Strength:

Strong 70WPC, Solid build, great closeout prices, Learning remote.

Weakness:

no S-vid (if you need it), Remote is not exactly easy to understand,

Like most, it was time for me to upgrade my old college Kenwood. I shopped for two months and had it narrowed down to Yamaha 496, Denon 1800, Pioneer Elite 21, and Onkyo 575. All are great receivers! I chose the Onkyo based on price and function. I wanted midnight mode since I have small children and much of my HT watching is done after hours. I also knew I was giving up the large speakers for a cleaner looking sat/sub speaker system. I wanted the 5 ch stereo for that reason. I have only had the unit for 2 weeks. I brought it home hooked up to my Acoustic Research floor speakers and Toshiba DVD and fired it up. My first impression was WOW - this is a strong receiver! My AR speakers have never sounded this good. I immediately took the volume to 74. I didn't really care if I blew the speakers. It was a fairly clean sound even at that level, though I would (could) never listen to anything at that level. I did notice a lack of bass. My new speaker package is on the way. I will re-review once I have it up and running. I am hooking this to the Klipsch Quintet/KSW10.

As for the Hissing, I have tried to find it, but it simply does not exist in my system.

One thing worth noting, there were two RCA jacks (pins) broken off in the VID1 output. I returned it to the retailer and they popped the back off the unit and pushed the pins out. The box was factory sealed and stapled. I know the retailer did not believe that it was like that out of the box. I didn't care though, they popped the pins out and gave me the same unit back. I was glad they did that. I did not want to chance taking a new unit home only to find a hissing problem (ground problem).

Like I said, I will play with this unit for a while once I get the Quintets wired and re-review at that time. 5 stars for value - they are giving these away now since the new model is out (with posts for all speakers and s-vid). 4 stars for overall - short on bass. Very good sound for under $400!!!

Strength:

Wonderful sound, lots of power, excellent construction

Weakness:

None, for my tastes

This unit blew me away! I've owned a couple of models of both Kenwood and Sony. Now, I realize those aren't the best receivers in the world, and I'm not an expert, but this is the best sounding receiver I've ever heard!

I've got it hooked to 5 NHT SuperOnes. I've been listening to a variety of CDs (Tchaikovsky, Hendrix, Clapton Unplugged) and watching Dolby 5.1 movies on my DSS. I am absolutely astounded at how good this thing sounds. No hiss detected at any level (from whisper soft all the way up to "turn me into a jelly head".

Remote control was a godsend for me...able to run my Samsung TV, 15-year old Teac CD, DSS, RCA VCR and the receiver. No real programming needed, just point your old remote at the new one, push the buttons on the old one and new one that should be the same, it learns.

I don't see how it could be any better for less than $500.

Great sound, great price, remote that actually works everything that it says it will.

Weakness:

Only 1 optical input, would have liked 2

Very funny how my old receiver cost me as much as my new Onkyo. And that was only a year ago. This receiver is great!! Great sound and I have to also agree with the 5-channel stereo mode, that also sounds great. I would have bought the 676, or 777 but this was the only one out at the time, but I am not disappointed. If you are looking at a receiver in the $500 range, nothing in my opinion can touch the Onkyo. Dolby Digital, DTS, and 6-channel inputs plus the 5-channel stereo mode? This is the best deal!!

Strength:

Solid construction, easy to use

Weakness:

No preamp level outs for anything but the subwoofer, no S-video inputs

My decision to buy this receiver was made after reading all of the reviews on this site as well as Audiophile Home Theater, but I was not pleased when I received the product. The amplifier has an audible crackle in the left channel which worsens when used for surround. I have attempted to contact Onkyo about this, but their customer service is quite weak and requires a call to New Jersey (from Texas for me), where I seemed to be placed on infinite hold. As I sat and accrued long-distance charges I decided that maybe this wasn't such a great buy after all. I know that one bad product does not mean they produce bad equipment in general, but I would expect slightly better quality control at this price. Sorry, this one goes back for refund.

This receiver sound's just fantastic in my home audio setup, It is paired with Infinity rs5 mains cc3 center rs3 rears and A JBL Powered Sub 10" For home theatre it is suberb. Stereo listening is also a dream. For a lower priced receiver this thing really puts out! No loss or blendiness like with my sony.

Strength:

DD, sound quality & clarity, price, remote

Weakness:

no s-video

This is a great receiver at a great price ($300)!!! The sound clarity is excellent and the Dolby Digital is superb, have not used the DTS yet. The sound that it puts out of my acoustic research speakers is very detailed and pleasant. Listening to movies is just like being in the theater. The 8 DSP sound fields are very nice, and all can be used easily. The 5ch stereo is a nice feature, but I prefer the studio-mix in most situations. The quality of build is very good and the feel of the unit is excellent. The remote is a plus, the ability to program any of your other remotes into it is easy and a excellent feature, the controls are nice (joystick takes a little getting use to).
The lack of S-video is the only missing item and is not a big deal unless you have a lot of sources that require s-video. The only other complaint is that the volume has to be high to get the power that I like. Keep in mind that I listen to music and movies at what most people would call extreme levels. Even at the levels that I listen the receiver does not get hot due to the large heat sink.
Overall this is the best receiver in this class, if you need S-video get the 575x, it will cost you (extra $100). This is the first Onkyo product that I have owned, so far I love it and would recommend to anyone.

P.S. No Hiss or anything like others have said, just great sound
