Strength:

Excellent clarity, plenty of power, learning remote, all for under $400!

Weakness:

Can't control bass or treble from remote!

I have no idea what all the "hissy-fits" are about... mine sounds perfect. I have Klipsch synergy speakers hooked up as well as a Yamaha sub. This system sounds excellent! The clarity and the sound reproduction are second to none. I bought it mainly for home theatre and it outperformed my expectations! I popped the Matrix in and could not believe the 5.1 Dolby Digital "experience"! It is superior to any store setup, as well as any movie theatre I've ever been in! It shakes the house. It scares my cats. It makes my dog bark when he hears one on a DVD. It makes my wife get up to answer the phone! What more could you ask for?!

This is the first receiver that I actually like and listen to the DSP modes. It has more bass and treble than you need, and I turned it all the up during movie playback and had no distortion at all! (Yes it was very loud!) The fact that you can put the 5.1 surround on for music was a very pleasant surprise!

The learnable remote was a pain in the ass for the first 5 minutes. (Then I read the manual.) After I learned how to program it, I programed all my remotes in less than 30 minutes. The nice thing is that I have ALL the buttons I really, really need, and none that I don't. Plus you can mix and match depending on your "remote style." Like putting the T.V. volume on the VCR settings.

This system is not quite as smart as my old JVC which uses the compulink computer to memorize your last settings on every component. But... this remote has macro settings which let you put in up to 16 commands into one button! I have my "movie" button which turns on all my components, sets the volume, the surround mode, and makes my popcorn. (Well, almost.)

To sum up, I don't know that you can do better between the price, features and quality of sound you get from this unit. Not only that, it's easier to operate, and IMHO, looks better than most all other models available. - I highly recommend this to people who have speakers that don't hiss.

Onkyo is a well respected name brand who makes nothing but the best. A great receiver for stereo, surround sound, and dvd's. It has 70 wpc for 5 speakers surround sound and 100 wpc for the 2 main speakers when you use the stereo. It has DSP modes, great remote, and room for expansion in the future. Best price audio video - $375. Can't beat that.

Strength:

Sound quality, ease of use

Weakness:

Hiss, s-video, remote

I am in the process of rebuilding my audio system as the last one purchased is over 20 years old. I read many reviews and loved the fact that this one has multiroom/ source capability and excellent reviews in the magazines "Home Theater & Stereophile".
I have rear ceiling mounted speakers, Boston Accoustics in the front and Wharfdale connected to the "B" source.
I connected my TV through the video source and The Onkyo 340 CD changer (no CD player until March).
There was no humn, hiss until I purchsed a center channel speaker. When playing TV through the receiver the dialog transmitts through the center but there is definitely a humn in the left and right channels.
I called Onkyo and got a tech. who said that this problem can be traced to certain tv's and a shield needed to be placed in the receiver to correct the problem and referred me to a local authorized rep.. This Friday I will find out if it works. I would hate to return this receiver as the music quality is great. But if the noise remains I guess I will return it and purchase the Yamaha 795a

Does anyone know how to enable the multi room/source capability? I have not been able to figure it out but the specs at CC and other web sites indicated the capability.

Tickled, but feeling guilty.

Strength:

No hiss. Really.

Weakness:

Attracts comments from the verbally impaired. Fortunately, the reliance on four letter descriptions readily identifies such clearly biased, irrational yet entertaining persons.

I find highly entertaining the apparently unending stream of invective ("sucks", etc.) that is directed at this, from my experiance, very fine product. However, I now regret my silent, selfish enjoyment. While I have chuckled at this poor unfortunate, he or she has continued a diatribe that no doubt inteferes with productive endeavors, such as counseling. So, in the spirit of the season, I suggest with the greatest sincerity that sir, or madam, you should consider getting a life.

Strength:

5 channel stereo, great remote

Weakness:

Very, very faint hiss.

This is a great receiver for the price. Got it from shoppers advantage for $400. Really enjoy the five channel stereo for music and TV. Dolby Digital sounds rich and impressive. I believe the hissing, which is very slight on mine, can be cure with an AC line conditioner.Monster Cable makes a pretty affordable one ($75). Awesome receiver. A must buy!

I've been tossing up between the Sony STR-DB930 and the Onkyo TX-DS575.
Well, I have to say that the Onkyo sounds very very good.

The sound is very clean, and the DSP features don't appear to be
terribly intrusive. The remote looks neat and direct.

I was really disappointed that the rear effect speakers don't have binding posts, but I can get by. The Euro/Australian unit switches S-VHS, but my
TV doesn't have S-VHS inputs. Shucks!

Only one problem identified during my listening session. We connected the amp to a set of NHT 1.5 speakers (damn fine hardware!), and playing Zorro in DTS, we noticed that the amp was making a sharp clicking noise when we were playing it at +70 volume. I guess it was clipping, but it wasn't that loud (mind you the maximum volume on the dial is +80, so it could be clipping).

I'm going to be very careful if I buy one of these, once I get the right price!

I'd love to hear from other Aussies considering the purchase of this unit.

I just got ahold of this puppy after reading some of the glowing reviews here. I paid full retail at Circuit City ($549) as I'm into instant gratification and didn't want to mess with having to return ship a defective unit.
My old unit was a Kenwood VR-2080 (DTS/Digital), and I must say that the difference between the two is amazingly evident. The Onkyo images very well, and my DTS CD's that I listened to were much fuller and crisper. I heard new nuances that I had never heard before. I also expect that the Re-EQ feature will come in very handy for standard music CD's. By no means am I an expert in this area, but I know what I like!

A few words about power. The Onkyo blows away my old Kenwood (which is really not that old, and was 100x5 so they say). On my old unit, I usually had to crank the volume way up for DVD movies. On the Onkyo, I'm pleased at about 50(absolute), and 60-65 is almost too much.

I'm running Wharfedale Valdus 400's for my front speakers, an Advent AV550s (this is a great sub!), and some not-so-good Sony center and surround speakers, all wired with Monster cable (it's worth it!).

Also, the remote seems pretty good so far. If you know about the Kenwood VR-2080, you can understand that ANY remote is better than the one that comes with that thing. I also like the fact that the remote has some macro functions you can program. It's a learning remote (my first experience with one of these), and programming it is somewhat tedious, but it only took about ten minutes to get the main functions I wanted programmed.

I'll stop back by and post a follow-up review in a month or so. If I don't, then this review still stands!

Summary: Great value for the money, blows away my old Kenwood, quick learning curve, crisp, full sound. 5 Stars!

Weakness:

I gave a long review on the previous format of this site. I am not going through it all again, but I couldn't be happier with this system. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a reasonably priced home theater system with DTS. Even if you don't care about the DTS, it's still a great system for the price.
