I have one of the first Onkyo TX-DS575 receivers available at Circuit City and I have had no hissing problems with this receiver. The sound is clean, pure, and crisp. The cleanest sound I have ever heard from any receiver I have had so far. Infact, I just installed one in a small playhouse and upon running intial tests did not expieriance any repeat any hissing sound at any volume level. For those who have had this problem this could be the reason: You do not have a line conditioner which will help to eliminate outside electrical interference within your system. These conditioners reduce the EMI and RFI levels that enter your system through your home's electricity. Infact my system and the one that I installed in the playhouse both have line conditioners and I have had no problems with either one. I reccomend a Panamax or a Monster Cable conditioner. For those who do not know what I am talking about, a line conditioner is basicly a surge protector with an EMI/RFI filter built-in. I stand by my orginal review and I think that this is still a terrific receiver.

Strength:

High Current Amp, 5 chnl stereo, 5.1 and DTS. Speaker B connection

Weakness:

No S-video, No banana plugs for rear souounds, Remote needs back light for night hunting

Given the price point I don't think I could have done any better. I had orginally bought the Harmon Kardon in open box and it didn't have enough juice, also I had taken it back because of a suround problem so while it was getting looked at I started thinking of putting speakers in the bedroom, no B speakers on any Harmon Kardon at Circut City so I asked to trade to the Onkyo. What joy! This thing has more than enough power for my apt. I'm pushing some Infinity Composition Overture 3's for mains with a cc-2 center and Reference 2 rears. The B set in the bedroom are Overture 2's. I've never had to turn it up past 5 for any movie or cd and get nothing but clean power, my landlord threatens to throw me out every other month and the volume is only at three then. I bought this reciever because of the high curent status even with 70watts x 5 it puts to shame much more "powerful"?, recievers I have listened to. Plus it's clean with a low THD% the same as other Onkyo's with more power and features. The 5-channel stereo feature is a big feature because even with my Digital Cable most of my normal channels don't get to me in stereo therefore no prologic bummer, so I have to use the 5ch to get the effect I want. I haven't had any problems with the hissing others talk about and mine is over a year old. I leave it on all night lots of times with the DMX playing, even at low volume it's crystal. I know my Infinity's have built in sub's so that could affect the volume for others without subs wanting to turn it up but turning on the B's while the A's are playing it's hard to notice a drop in volume level. I would have bought a more expensive amp but I've always been told to get the best speakers you can afford first so I did, then bought what I think was the best Descrete Channel A/V reciever there was in the store without all of the bells and whistles. I'm not disapointed one bit and you won't be either.

Strength:

Solid Construction (except speaker connections); Clean, strong amplifiers; more than enough inputs to meet my needs for several years; an excellent warranty.

Weakness:

No S-Video; only one optical audio input; weak speaker connections; remote; Onkyo customer no service.

Short version of my experience: Buy from a local vendor that will service it themselves.

I bought this reciever in December 1999 to replace another that gave up after 15 years (the smoke and sparks were very entertaining). It is connected to custom-made front speakers that each contain a 12" woofer and 12" passive radiator, two 5" midranges, two 3" tweeters and a horn. It takes a forklift to move them. They were built in the mid 70s and purchased with the Mirantz. The rears are bookshelf Cerwin Vegas. No center channel or subwoofer yet (may never get a sub since the front speakers will break dishes). Also connected is a 32" Phillips-Magnavox TV, a Pioneer DVD, Panasonic VCR, Technics turntable, and older JVC CD player and tape deck. A good system for what I have invested.

For the first 11 months, this receiver performed flawlessly. My home theatre system is a work in progress, but it has more than met our needs. It fills our family room (15x18 with vaulted ceiling) with sound with little effort, and next to no heat on the unit.

About 11 months in, the receiver started developing a hiss. At about the same time it started an intermitent problem of power on but no sound. Turning it off and on again was the remedy initially, but the hiss only got worse. In addition, it started affecting the TV, changing channels at random. After about six weeks of that, it died completely.

Three issues to cover here: 1) Onkyo customer support needs a serious overhaul; 2) Onkyo's authorized service centers can be found (I found two in Atlanta), but they were backed up for two months; 3) Circuit City not only fixed it for me, but they did it in a week.

I bought the unit at Circuit City specifically because I knew I could count on them for service. When my problem started initially, I attempted to talk with Onkyo about what might be the problem. They sent me to their service center. The service center (good guys even if they have too much to do) recommended I go to Circuit City (why didn't I think of that?).

One final point. Had Circuit City not been able to repair my unit, they would have replaced it with a new one. I could have bought my unit in December 1999 for about $430 online. I paid $500 for the promise of service. I am glad I did.

By the way, the fix was to correct a flaw in the internal grounding. The hiss is gone, the TV has settled down, and it sounds good as new.

I give it five stars for value, and four stars overall because it broke. Otherwise, this is a great receiver with clean sound, strong base (gotta have the right speakers, boys), and awsome surround sound output, whether from DVD, the TV, a VHS tape, or a CD. Perhaps other units can best this one, but not for the money.

My first home theatre receiver. Other receivers were an old Technics, which the Onkyo replaced when it died, and an even older Mirantz, which is on its last legs. Also have an Onkyo 8211 receiver in my son's bedroom.

i found this receiver at a pawn shop for get this"$140" can you beleive that some poor fool gave this thing away. i actually had one on layaway for $499 and went and got it for $140. i think that this receiver has excellent dts and dolby digital capabilities. i use it primarily as my surround receiver for my computer system and have infinity center channel with B&W dm 604 s2 speakers on all four corners backed up wit a paradigm 12" sub. the surround sound is amazing. i am very happy with the onkyo's performance it never even gets mildly warm even cranked all the way up. it presents perfect clarity and never get any hiss at any level. i highly recommend this product though most will probably pay considerably more than $140 to hear this high of a quality sound.

Onkyo finally issued a SERVICE BULLETIN about the HISS in these units! Bulletin number 99010-r1. Tech will have to modify several circuits. It supposed to apply to units with a serial number that does NOT end with an "A". (So the ones with the "A" behind the serial number supposedly has the mod done from the factory... We'll see....)

A high-performance monster! Read about Onkyo's innovations and structural build (the WRAT, the massive power transformers and capacitors, the dual-cast heat sinks, the separate a/v circuit boards, and etc. on their home-page). All the specs and features had me drooling ... after buying one (only $500 for something that can be highly comparable to receivers 2X its cost), I was thanking the Gods of Audio for producing such an incredible receiver!
Industrial-strength ... an absolute titan and better yet, a financial steal! You won't even consider anything else after experiencing an Onkyo 575.

I just purchased the fantastic Onkyo TX-DS575. Having never had a hometheater system before, I was quite impressed. I also purchased an AKAI CT2990AT-DPL 68cm TV, a Pioneer DV-414 DVD player and 4 x Cerwin Vega HT-SAT5, 1 x Cerwin Vega HT-CTR25, 1 x Cerwin Vega LW-12 (12" Powered Sub). Very nice crisp sound.
I am using the SVHS from the DVD to the 575 to the TV (YES! The Aussie 575 has SVHS switching!) & Toslink from the DVD to the 575.

There is an annoying POP every so often, it turns out to be my fridge turning off. Nearly worth turning the fridge off, but I need it to keep the beer cold!

The remote is fantastic, but I have had a little problem with it twice. It didn't want to talk to the TX-DX575. It didn't have flat batteries, as it worked perfectly with my TV, VCR & DVD. I reset the remote & it still didn't work. I was about to unplug everything and take it back, but it started working again and has worked perfectly for the past few days. Maybe it was me playing with macros etc.

Overall the 575 is a beast and has lots of fuctionallity. 5ch Stereo is excellent for most TV & FM, Prologic for Video & DD for DVD. (A few DTS discs in Australia would be nice). It runs quite cool and for the price, I didn't go wrong.

I just bought the Onkyo TX-DS575 for about a month. The overall performance andquality is OK. But there are some week points in this amp. I always need to
set the volume to 40 or over to hear music or see movie. The maximum volume of
this amp is 70, so you can imgaine the output is not good enough!! At first, I
was think that the problem is caused by my Celestion 20i speakers. Then I changed to a smaller size 60watt Celestion 3 speaker but the result is the same!! The other problem is that Hiss sound!! When connect to Coaxial or
Optical then there is no problem! But when I used it to connect to a analog
deivce and the volume is over 50 then the HISS sound is coming!! The amp overall performance is good but I won't rate it to 5 star product.

I just returned my second 575, for the same problem I had with the last one. It seems there is a mojor quality control problem with Onkyo, and many of these recievers have a notcable and very annoying hissing problem. So all you people out there are not loosing your minds, these things are noisy. My salesperson told me Onkyo has RECALLED ALL OF THE 777's for the same hissing problem! The 575 will probably be next.I went out and purchased a Yamaha RX-V795a, which totally blows the 575 away. It has great sound, high current, and no QC problems! Thank you Yamaha!
