I have owned this incredible receiver for a little over a week now and I am IMPRESSED! I don't have any signs of the "mystery hiss" mentioned in a couple of the previous reviews and strongly suspect another culprit other than this Onkyo! The build quality on this receiver, specially considering it's price point , is super. and the sound ( which is really what matters) is buttery smooth.I have this receiver set up with a pair of Paradigm Mini-Monitor for l/r front, Paradigm ASP350 Surrounds, Paradigm CC350 center, Advent AV550s suband I'm in heaven!
Easily a five star receiver!!

Strength:

Good dsp modes, 5 chanel stereo, great decoding

Weakness:

no on screen display

I bought this unit for my dad at Circuit City last weekend, It sounded great while playing music and watching Saving Private Ryan and also twister (DVD). The decoding and the bass where very much above normal. My concern was, while I was watching "Big Daddy" on DVD, There were moments that I would actually here what others would describe as a hiss. Since it's a DVD that's mainly dialog from the center speaker I would hear it from the main speakers. Is it the DVD or is it the receiver ?.....How do I know if this is what every one is talking about ?...other than that I think it's a very decent player.

Strength:

Let me say this first. I have heard a select few say they hear a hum in thier TXDS575 and to those people I would like to say "get your hearing checked" now I have been nothing but satisfied with my 575 it is a great reciever at a great price. the quality of sound is awesome and it didn't cost me a arm and a leg. Both decoders are a big plus

Weakness:

the fact that it lacks S-Video swithching was a little disappointing but if you only have to hook up a dvd player your all set.

If you are looking for a reciever with both Dolby Digital and DTS with high current output and discrete circuitry this is the model for you.......PLAIN AND SIMPLE

Strength:

DD, DTS, DSP modes, Re-EQ

Weakness:

no s-video switching (not a problem for me), spring clips for surrounds

I've had this since the middle of August and got one of the first stock to enter Canada. I purchased this from a great A/V store in Toronto (if you're ever in Toronto, go to Kromer Radio - very helpful, knowledgeable people and not pushy at all). Plenty of power for my apartment setup. I personally like the 5-channel stereo as well - great for CDs and TV watching. DVDs from my Pioneer 414 sound incredible through the digital coax input - both DD and DTS are clean. Lack of S-Video switching is not a concern for me since I have an old TV with only RF input - the RF modulator from Radio Shack work well for now until I save up enough money for a TV with component inputs anyways (need a bigger apartment too). The remote is great - I was able to program all my accessories into one unit - even the woman of the household likes having only one remote on the coffee table (had to give a Remote 101 course though :-). The composite video inputs are great for my VCR and cable box, so it doubles as a composite video switcher for me. Only nagging negative is the spring clips used for the surround speakers - having 12 ga speaker wire mashed into these clips was nearly impossible. No hiss from my unit - I do notice hiss on occasion, but it seems to come from my cable box. I don't notice anything with DVDs or CDs. If you're considering a new receiver, I'd recommend this one - best bang for the buck.

I bought this a few days ago for a cheep price of $341.00 and it's the best $341.00 dollars that I have spent. There is a very slight hiss, however it is only heard from the tweeter and not bary noticable. Even with the set at volume 30 the sound is remarkly loud. Dolby Digital and DTS are great. Cd play back was great, if you have a cd player with a AC-3 output use it. I do get a sound delay in DD but not DTS. FM reception is also superb. Like the 5 Stereo and Unpluged is not to bad, as for the rest I'd get better ones or improve the current. Watched Armageddon, The Fifth Element, and The Matrix all on DVD and this baby produced sounds that I previously didn't hear. With thevolume level set at fifty for all movies it ever did it get hot, a little warm but never hot.Again it's a hell of a reciever for the price. I give it 4.5 stars. Would have liked to see some S-Video ins and out, but what the hell it only cost me 341 dollars.

Bought this receiver two months ago, and I don't have any 'hiss' whatsoever. I find this receiver well made, and the sound is outstanding. No complaint whatsoever.

Hi ALL of you. I have also purchased Onkyo TX-DS575 two weeks ago. My decision comes from the many good reviews posted on Home Theater Forum and the specs at the Onkyo's Homepage. I have tested its performance by more than 10 DVDs, and a few audio CDs. As regards to the annoying Hissing sound, I do definitely hear in all the speakers when playing music CDs. On the other hand, sound of the DVDs is accurate, clean and crisp coming from all the channels. As I am listening 70/30 percents to DVD/Music, it is still acceptable especially of its good price. One puzzle I have not resolved yet is about the Stereo mode, which should cut out the surround effect. However, I find that not all the input sound is output from the front speakers (Model: Jamo Prestige 70, bookshelf type). The consequence is some TERRIBLE music. I don't know whether this is purposely designed in order to engage the 5 Ch Stereo. But I am sure that my old Kenwood DD-Receiver will play the Stereo mode exactly with the front speakers only.
Finally, I would give it a rating of 4 stars.

I have to be honest - I originally purchased a Sony DE-835 but then read all of the mediocre reviews on this site. I decided that I would step-up and go with an Onkyo 575 (I had read many good reviews about it). I felt like I was getting a "real" receiver that was a definite step above the Sony DE line.
The receiver is really nice (the remote is even better). The sound is crisp and clean and it plays movies wonderfully. It doesn't have very many sound modes (mainly stereo and 5 channel stereo) but if you are mainly watching movies and using the digital aspect of the receiver - you are going to be fine. It decodes wonderfully and sounds great. I also really like the fact of having 5 channel stereo.

BUT... I had a few problems with the Onkyo 575. First, yes I heard the hissing. It wasn't really that bad, but it is there. I thought some people might be hearing things until I bought it and heard it myself. It really isn't that big of a deal to me - if you turn the volume to 0 then it goes away, but even if the volume is at 2 (out of 80) then you will hear it.
Second, although the 5 channel stereo mode is really nice, the music doesn't sound that great. I feel that this mode is really for background noise at parties (just like the manual says). Whenever I used 2 channel stereo the bass coming from the front speakers was average. When I switched to 5 channel - the bass (what little there was) seemed to disappear. That was a real let down (of course you want to jam with music surrounding you!).

Then I started hearing about the new Sony DB line and how great the reviews have been. Since only companies that carry the ES line can carry this line I had to go to my local Hi-fi store (Home Entertainment) and check them out. THe DB830/930 is much more like the ES line than the DE line. So I picked up a DB830 and took back my DE 835.

I have been listening to the DB 835 for a week now and am very impressed. Plenty of power, plenty of bass, binding posts for ALL speakers, s-video switching, useful sound fields, etc. I must say that the Sony remote doesn't compare with the Onkyo (learning & macro) remote but the receiver is more bang for the buck.

I haven't returned the Onkyo yet - I want to give it another shot after I have listened to the Sony a little more. That way I can give them a good comparison. But I think that I will probably still be unsatisfied with the Onkyo. I am disappointed - I really was excited about the Onkyo and was hoping that I would love it (since it is a step-up, or is it?) but I just don't.

Hope this helps.
