Strength:

Clear, accurate sound... nice remote... great speaker setup utility.

Weakness:

no s-video or pre-outs (except for sub)

-The sound is VERY impressive. Responsive sound. Clear sound . I have been using this receiver for both movies and music for about 2 months and I still can't wait to get home from work to enjoy it.
-The way u can setup and adjust each speaker channel is great! The scheme for speaker setup seems well thought out and well engineered.
-I like the fact Onkyo did not over do it with the DSP modes like Sony (sheesh Sony, give that crap a rest).
-The all DIGITAL VOLUME control totally ROCKS !!!
-Three digital inputs is nice... Onkyo should have designed it with two OPTICAL inputs and one coaxial input (instead of two coaxial and one optical).
-The remote is very good in my opinion, even if it is not back-lit. It is easy enough to use in the dark anyway.
-For the price, I can do without s-video or extra pre-outs.
-If you hear hiss on any amp in the store, it might NOT be correctly connected, setup, or configured. I here no hiss at all on this Onkyo TX-DS575 in the comfort of my cozy aprartment! :)

Sound, remote, circuitry, value

s-video, inputs/outputs,

First I must say, I have absolutely NO HISS, not at high sound levels or at any levels!! Just clean, clear dynamic sound. Great sounding receiver! Setting up the receiver took awhile, on screen display settings would have been a lot of help for me. Not to mention having to take a remote 101 course. But once set up will control everything you got. Very impressed! highly recommended!

You go Chris. I too, had to read through the crap. I am so glad that I didn't listen to those bogus reviews. This is one sweet entry level, digital receiver. Some compromises had to be made ie, no s-vid; but instead you get sound quality that is unheard of at this price.

Oh yeah, no hiss for me. NONE! I was a bit nervous when I hooked everything up. I checked every speaker. I unpluged the inputs. I cranked up the volume. In fact the only thing I was able to hear close up was was how undistorted the sound was at a good level.

If you are thinking to go with another brand, do yourself a favor and test out the 5ch stereo with a CD(or pure stereo for dihard hi-fi types). Music is the best way to test this things greatness. Keep in mind, if you really need s-vid switching, pick up a $50 Sony video hub. If you ask me, this one's a keeper.

Strength:

Hey, this isn't a review! I already gave one.

Weakness:

The fact that this site needs some kind of monitoring.

I find it amazing what is going on in this review site. First I see a bunch of reports of hiss that are obviously from the same guy and those remain. Any reports of hissing have lost any validity because like in Usenet the bored jump on the band wagon, I am also familiar enough with usenet to know that fake reviews often give unnecessary details to prove legitimacy and then damn with faint praise. Now I get to see a wonderful 3 star review by Mike Nguyen who hasn't even heard the receiver let alone owned one. What utter crap! Well since I was able to read through the BS enough to know this would be great receiver and ordered one. I will rate it again (why not? Doesn't seeem to matter.) and give it 5 stars this time as I have really warmed up to the remote and the ease of operation even without on-screen display. This site really needs some kind of moderator or review checker in just a minor capacity really, or it will never be taken seriously and will be of no help at all to the inexperienced.

my 575 is still in the shop...an authorized service center...and they cant seem to be able to fix the intermittent sound phenomena. I have repeatedly e-mailed onkyo and have not recvd an answer for why it it takes so long to get a part to fix it. Poor quality control and no srvice support makes this company a bad choice to deal with. Why is there no 800 number so a consumer can vent his spleen to the onkyo higher up? why have a web site if they have no intention of contacting you back to see if there is something they can do to resolve problems. I'd send them back this piece of junk...if i ever get it back from service...but onkyo wont let me know where to ship it.It has been 2 months at the service center!!! what gives onkyo?? you dont care what happens to your product once it has been sold? DONT BUY ONKYO!!!

Strength:

5 channel listening, powerfull great for DTS and tons else

Weakness:

no s-video (oh well)

This is one great reciever. It is by far the best deal out there. Ive cranked it up to 70 volume and I have yet to hear distortion (Yeah I know its bad for the speakers but I gots some Polk RT55's that are not gonna blow out.)

About the hissing, there is a slight hissing if u get up right next to it. But it is definitly not worth getting upset over (if your listening to anything at all you won't notice it). It has a cool late night setting to make the voices more audible and dims loud sounds, very cool.

And I love the 5 channel settup (if you turn down the back speakers just a tad on speaker setup It'll sound even better than studio mix cuz it won't have that wierd reverb on the back channels. Overall, I still can't believe they sell it for less than 500 (usually about 300). If you are looking for a great start to a speaker system I reccomend going out and testing some receivers by yourself. I guarantee you will end up buying the Onkyo575 (I did). 5++rating

Strength:

Incredible clarity of sound to all 5 channels; no hiss (I don't know what all you other fools are talking about); 3 video ins and 2 analog audio ins; 2 coaxial ins; 1 optical in

Weakness:

no s-video ins

This is my first Dolby Digital receiver. Onkyo was not lying about the "Best Sounding Receiver With Dolby Digital" ad. I'm using a Marantz CC 48 CD player, Cambridge Soundworks "The Surround 5.1" surround speakers, Cambridge Soundworks "Tower III" main speakers and a Mirage FRx-s8 100 watt 8 inch powered subwoofer. This receiver has all the functions any audiophile could need except THX. It has Dolby Pro-Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS processing (for DVDs). Don't pay much attention to the types of connecters this receiver uses. Gold plated or not, it really doesn't make a big difference.

If you want a Dolby Digital receiver that won't disappoint you, pick this one up for less $479.99 at Circuit City.

Strength:

high current amp, learning remote

Weakness:

No Svideo, could use another TOSLINK hookup, no tape 2-monitor

Overall- exceptional value for the buck. Quiet in all channels. DD/DTS performs very well. Includes all the features (5-channel stereo, midnight mode, RE-EQ)that are important to me, and nothing else. I'll never use 30+ DSP modes, so why pay for it? Sure, there are other superior products- but for the same money? I think NOT! I would've like to have seen another optical input, tape-2 monitor for my eq and S-video, but with those features, I'm sure the price would've gone up.

Bottom Line- Excellent compromise between performance and features. If you like bells and whistles, look somewhere else. This receiver gives you a whole lot of performance for the money.

I bought my Onkyo 575 after listening and comparing it to Yamaha 795 both in the show room and home. I have had it for a week now and never regretted it as I feel it is a much better product than the Yamaha. It is a receiver that strikes a balance between H/T and stereo hifi listening. For stereo listening (effectoff, two channels), the bass in the Onkyo 575 sounds punchy and composed while the Yamaha 795 sounds a little boomy. Midrange sounds more natural/neutral in the case of Onkyo. Onkyo has better separation and has more depth in the sound stage. I could hear more details I haven't heard before with my previous amplifiers.

I also like the no-frill approach of Onkyo in that it doesn't have too many DSP programs/modes to confuse you. (The DSP programs in Yamaha are nice but you will find you hardly need them anyway as they don't sound very natural.)

For a very good sounding receiver that presents the best of both worlds (H/T and stereo listening) with a modest price tag, I give it a five stars rating
