I just wanted to correct my mistake (i gave 5 instead of 1). I got the chance to read the 2nd letter below mine and i must say that the guy must be working for onkyo or he likes onkyo's products (blind). Man open your eyes and your ears and listen. Noone said that when you put turn up the volume you shouldn't hear hiss. I agree. All receivers/amps have hiss at high levels (10th scale about 7-10) but is it normal to hear hiss at 1 or 2? Eh? My friend has this amp and he is complaining to me all the time about that. I had this amp too (but took it back thank god) and had the same problem. Is it normal? Come on. Be serious. If i had a defective receiver i would say ok you are right, onkyo deserves a second chance but 2 receivers to be faulty? Man, perhaps then onkyo should raise the quality of their checking and testing the unit before shipping.

Strength:

Upgraded 575 - Integra DTR-5 : Perfect, crystal clear stereo sound

Weakness:

No S-Video switching, one optical link only ...

Integra DTR-5 is everything Onkyo TXDS575 had to be : no hiss, clear stereo sound, exceptional dynamic. Superbly handling even demanding classic orchestra dynamic.

Strength:

Awesome remote, great overall features, ease of use, 5 channel stereo, drives my 4 floor tower speakers well

Weakness:

only 1 optical input

Bottom line: incredible value, can drive my 6 speaker system well. I have 4 200-250watt floor towers (Infinity & Wharfedale), Pinnacle Gold Center, and a JBL subwoofer. This receiver produces great sound in 5 channel mode, which I use almost exclusively, for room-filling sound. Dolby Digital is incredible with this receiver. It is a keeper, and I will have it for years to come. Only big drawback is one optical input, but I can learn to live with that at this point. All features are easy to use. NO NOTICEABLE HISS AT ALL WITH MINE, IN OVER 6 MONTHS OF USE. Remote control can run ALL of my components, Sharp TV, Philips CD player, Pioneer DVD, JVC VCR. It beats all other remote controls hands-down. Would only add back-lighting to the remote. This receiver trully rocks, and all music sounds great. It is slightly light on bass overall. But my speakers, and subwoofer make up for it easily. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

UMMMM....NONE YET

This is one bad ass reciever. I love it. I bought from YAWA audio for $430 delivered. It sounds even better than I thought it would, from testing it at the different stores here in town. The Onkyo it easy to setup and really impressed me with some of the features. The pro-logic sound with my current setup of 5 speakers (no-sub yet) was very impressive. Even w/out the sub I still get the bass that sounds wonderfull. I highly recommend at least giving this recieve the once over. (I don't hear any hissing on mine, during hi-fi vids, or DSS, or reg. tv) it all sounds wonderful. Must check-out for the self. Don't go by the posting here (e.g bad reviews of this reciever, I almost didn't get it for that reason too.) The remote is cool too!!

Weakness:

No SVHS, Hiss.

No SVHS? Hiss problems? Give me a break! I went down the local HiFi store and the only product to turn me away was this! Other onkyo's looked ok but this one......

Strength:

NO HISS except at very LOUD volumes. Great remote. Thumping sound with no distortion. 5 year warranty.

Weakness:

Not enough DSPs and those that exists are artificial sounding. No OSD.

I Agree, if you have not taken the unit home, DONT waste our time by posting a review and distorting the review rating. As for HISS must be a US problem.

Our models have SVHS connections so it is great.

Great 5 channel mode.

With very careful listening to classsical CDs not as 'full' sounding as the Luxman which although 10 years old is regarded as 'audiophile' quality and I cannot crank that unit up more than half way without HISS, but at that level it sounds louder than the Onkyo. But who cares when playing dance music at loud levels eg 55-65.

Probably not enough line outs. Could do with multi channel out.

Paid AU$1095, which after conversion from US$ and sales tax and import duties on top is not too bad.

Strength:

Learning remote, built in digital decoder, multiple digital inputs.

Weakness:

No S-video input/outputs, no built in equalizer

I tried the same test that the guy before did. I put a CD on pause and cranked up the volume. I had to get it up to about 67 before I could hear the 'hiss' without my ear pressed up against my speaker. My speakers aren't that good(cambridge ensemble IV) but I do have monster cables and the system is away from the TV. I bet if you crank up the volume to those levels on a lot of more expensive receivers you'll get the same thing. I can't say that this receiver is better than anything else since I really didn't listen to anything else in it's class. I can say that 'it's works for me'. The remote is great! The receiver is easy to setup has a built is digital decoder two coxail digital inputs and makes my low end speakers sound great!

I did get the opportunity to try out two 575 receivers. One of the receivers did have a strong hiss on the right back speaker but my guess is the receiver was defective(since the right back speaker wouldn't play in all modes).

Thanks to this place I got my receiver for around $344. I bought it from HIFI.com who sold it to me for 499. They have a price guarantee for 30 days. Someone here posted that they got their's for 369. I emailed HIFI about the other site and their refunding me the difference. Hifi also offers a $25 bonus to first time buyers so 369-25=344(with free shipping). I can't complain!

I'm giving it 4 stars for a lack of S-video ports, 5 stars overall- especially for the price!

I've had this receiver for 2 weeks and i must say that i have alot of problems with it.
At first i got this hiss sound from all the speakers (i went with my friend that day and we bought the same receiver for him and he has got the same problem too).
Second is the power output from this receiver. When i turn up the volume more than 50% i get too much distortion.
Third is the fact that when i watch the godzila and during the menu screen, when you change the options in the menu the pages are flipping and you get a sound like a burning paper or so with a strong bass at the beginning. Now i heard this on a Yamaha and i could hear very clear the burning effect, on my receiver i loose the first 1 sec of this so i get a flat sound. I don't like it at all. I thought that it was the DVD player's fault but no. I tried my player on a Yamaha and a Sony receiver and i got the effect perfect and clean. Then i tried it on the receiver my friend got (same one) and i got the same problem. Hmmmm. The only good thing is the remote. It has macro functions. I'll take it back to the store as soon as i can.

Strength:

Great Sound For the Money

Weakness:

Minor Hiss, only audible at extreme levels or very close to front speakers

Positives:

I would have never considered this reciever had a friend of mine not showed me it. The People who say that this doesn't have a lot of power Must be used to separates or ultra high end audio. I doubt that you can get more power in this price range. In stereo mode 40/80 is pretty loud, and 60/80 is ear near splitting. In Souround sound mode 50/80 is loud and 55-60/80 is very close to a loud movie theater. The sound is clean and clear at all these levels and above. I've yet to hear mine distort at all!

Dobly Digital and DTS both sound great

Negatives:

I would agree that there is a hiss but up to 50 there it isn't very audible until you get about 2 feet from the front speakers. If you pause the DVD/CD that your watching and crank it up to 65, 70, 75 + you will start to be able to hear it at any listening position, but I don't think my ears could take that much.

One day the video switching on the reciever just stopped working. I've yet to take it in to repair, and this does bother me. Also no S-video switching available.

Overall:

A solid reciever in this price range. Great sound, loud and clear. I Would Definately recomend saving up your money and getting this reciever now, and later buy the latest and greatest in a few years.
