$400 with all of this stuff built in? How do they build them so cheap?

This product is built like a rock and represents a definite step up in quality from most mass-produced receivers like pioneer, sony and technics. It includes enough features that will keep you busy for months and even includes a learning remote with a built in joystick, the best that I have seen.

At any reasonable listening level all five channels sound very clean without a trace of hiss, distorion or hum.

I agree with most of the positive reviews that this product has received but find it very incredible that some people have had a bad experience with this machine. Having read their reveiws, a number problems have very obvious and simple solutions.

For what it is worth, here are a few of my recommendations:

Stay away from non-reputable unauthorized dealers that sell defective merchandise, ‘B’ goods, gray market items and open-box specials, you are just asking for problems. Always purchase your gear from authorized dealers with liberal return policies like YAWA Audio and Video. Do not attempt to plug bare stripped wire into the binding post on the back of the receiver, use only high quality speaker wire terminated with banana plugs. Buy and use an optical interconnect from your DVD/CD player to you receiver for the best sound quality. Have an electrician look at your house wiring and correct any defects.

If you have champagne taste and a beer budget, check this baby out.

Just got it from Sound City, $389+Shipping, 4 day arrival time. I love its heavy duty construction. Have not heard the hiss that the Hiss-Meister raves about. Perhaps he should check out his trailer for snakes. Fills up my 17'x22'
listening room with 10" cathedral ceiling wonderfully. Definitely not short on power. Will consider Onkyo when its time to upgrade to THX in the future.

I can't believe this receiver does not have at least a 4.7 or above rating.. Many thanks to all these reviewers giving it a 1 who haven't given it a fair chance. Guess you guys have not read December's issue of STEREOPHILE GUIDE TO HOME THEATE 1. Budget Product of the Year and Gold Award for receiver of the year... right behind the DENON AVR-5700, which costs 5, sometimes 6 times as much.
Here are a few quotes from the article:
"It's not often we can rave about a budget receiver, but Michael Fremer was amazed by what he heard from the Onkyo. With it's smooth, silky sound, solid power output, excellent ergonmics, and wide range of usable features, the Onkyo is a solid winner." These words sum it up.

I have it connected to
M&K Sub
Sound Dynamics Front/Cen/Rear
Toshiba 3109
Bright Star Audio Sand base for DVD player and shock abosrbing legs for receiver (provides better imaging and clarity also increases picture quality with DVD movies)

Have had it 2 months and love it. Hooked up a HK AVR65 which cost nearly 400 more dollars, but after hearing both I felt like the Onkyo was a better deal. The center channel had better clarity with the Onkyo and the HK did not have 5 channel stereo, which I enjoy.

My favorite DVD to demo this receiver is either Saving Pvt Ryan in DTS or The Matrix...

Anyone looking for a receiver....Do yourself a favor and check this baby out!!!!!!

Strength:

CLEAR sound! Powerful and strong 5.1 performer. TIGHT bass!!

Weakness:

Remote? Video Switching(but I don't use this)

Well I don't know where excatly the hiss is on some of these models, but I have yet to hear it. Funny thing that none of the reviews (ie. Sterephile, Home Theater, Audio, and Sound and Vision) never mention it. I haven't hear it. I crank it up too, everyday..Still no hiss..

Anyways this great receiver just got the Gold Award in Sterephile Guide to Home Theater. They compared it to the Denon AVR 5700. And it held up against it!! For 5 times less. Very tight bass, esp. since the damping factor is 60 into 8 ohms. Great mid and clear clear highs.

Never gets hot when cranked. A great reciever if you have only 600-1000 to spend.

Clear, transparent sound. Solid construction. Fantastic remote.

Weakness:

Hiss and Hum. It's true.

I wanted to like this receiver. I really did, honest. It's an open box discount item that I got from Circuit City. I was pretty much ready to buy a Kenwood VR309, listened to the 575 in the store, and changed my mind based on the sound comparison. Didn't actually listen to the one I bought, though. Probably a bad move. When I got it home and hooked it up, I noticed it when fooling around with my TV settings. After disconnecting everything except the speakers and playing with the volume, the hiss and noise become pretty obnoxious from about the -5 level on up. Turning up the volume all the way it gets downright scary. Manipulating the settings such as the speaker level doesn't seem to have and effect.

I thought it might be interaction with some other piece of equipment so I took it up to my office where I keep the SA8500(purchased in the mid-70's and still kicking ass). I A/B'd it with the Pioneer through my Infinities, and sure enough, still major league noisy. The Pioneer is virtually silent - wattage and spec's are comparable enough to concern me. Funny thing is, I ran another test with a Pioneer that came from my wife's little department store component set from the late 80's and it was as quiet as mine.

Three possibilities here, I guess. One, maybe I'm expecting too much. Maybe with all the crap they build in these days, you are just going to get that noise. In that case, when I take this thing back tomorrow and do a compare at CC, I'll hear them all do it and in that case I may just give up and live with it. Second, it may just be the one I have. That would explain why it came back, although it would probably mean that when the salesman said it came back because the previous buyer wanted more power he was a lying sack of s***, and I'll probably just take the refund and head for Best Buy. Third, it may be this line is just prone to this kind of thing, in which case some of the people in this thread may just have been unjustifiably harsh to whatever person(s) may have brought this up originally.

I put my full name here so you'll know this is a different and hopefully legitimate complaint. I don't have any axe to grind here. Just want a good sounding receiver, so if anyone out there is really militantly Onkyo, you might want to hold off flaming me until I get to chapter 2. For now, though, thumbs down.

Weakness:

Lack of S-Video input

This is my one week review of this product. All I have to say that this product is awesome. Plenty of power, excelent stereo imaging, even makes my TV sound better!. Love the simple and easy hookup without any hitch. Wish the documentation was more clear about the usage of the remote control. I don't have a DVD so I can not tell how it will sound on it. But music sounds great! loud and clear thru my RS-5 fronts, RS-3 rears, Klipsch KSW12 sub, 32" Toshiba TV. I can turn up the volume very loud without any clipping or distortion. Simple and easy front controls make it a breeze to move between source selection, DSP modes and other functions. Really love the speaker setup function where all I have do is tell the rcvr my listening distance from the front and rear speakers and how loud I want them, DS575 does the job of setting the the delay. My fav DSP modes are 5 Chl stereo, Orchestra, Unplugged and TV logic. I am very happy with this system and its gonna stay with me for a long time. If your are with a tight budget but want to experience the latest in audio technology you can't beat Onkyo engineering, reliability and performance for the price. If you are still in doubt, then get this- stereophile magazine (12/99 issue) just awarded Onkyo TX-DS575 the Gold Award for product of the year!!! Dont wait just get out there and get this recr and fill your holidays with blissful music. I give this product a very happy 5.
