Strength:
5 ch Stereo, Dolby Digital
Weakness:
Hiss..., 70 watts/ch I really wanted to like this receiver, but alas it has been returned to where it came from. The unit performed admirably on music and theatre, but the inherent hiss is intolerable. At high volumes, the sound resembles that of a hair dryer. I have the TXDS 676 on order and will post a review once I have a chance to audition it. Similar Products Used: JVC 668VBK |

Yes indeed very strong Hiss!
Weakness:
Hiss! What to say.... if you are a mazohist and you hate your ears then go for this Babe! It has the greatest hiss of all! And this is Onkyo's guarantee! They say that this Hiss makes onkyo's receivers so special. Go ahead and call them! |

Strength:
DTS, DSP, Remote, Late Night Mode (apartment listening)
Weakness:
hiss, one optical input I have a wonderful experience with this reciever! It has all the bells and whistles an audio and video listener could want and the right amount of power. The DTS mode is fantastic. Late night mode is a great feature if you live close to your neighbors and you like watching movies at night. The hiss is there but not to bad if you sit at the correct distance from your speakers. |

Strength:
dolby digital, dts, pro logic decoders, learning remote, value, incredible sound
Weakness:
no s-video outputs, skimmpy speaker connections This is a big-time player without the big-time price. A modest $419 at Sound City. This unit has the bells and whistles of a high end receiver. DTS, Dolby Digital and Pro Logic decoders performed flawlessly through a few DVDs I tested. There was no evidence of any hiss during operation that others were complaining about. The power (70watts x 5) was sufficient even with a fairly large room. Setup was fairly easy, however I can't understand why Onkyo neglected the s-video ouput. This is an excellent value for a mid-range priced receiver and would recommend it to anyone. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
The strenghts on this unit is that it is very well built. The set-up is very easy. It has a good clean sound and the amp only gets warm not hot like I have seen from some other receviers. Powerful 5.1 preformer.
Weakness:
NO S-video, but I don't use it. NO on-screen menus, only one optical digital in. But since I don't use them, it doens't matter to me. Good receiver for the moeny. I love it! It has good power and good tight bass, good wide soundstage and open highs. This receiver is a steal. So far no problems with hissing, unless you put your ear right up to the rears and listen carefully. I don't hear it. Similar Products Used: Optimus STAV-3370 |

I bought this unit after returning the Yamaha RX595. The Yamaha kept cutting out when I had the volume around 9:30 - 10:00. I was using an EQ and I have 4 ohmn speakers for the rears, maybe that's why?? In my opinon, the Onkyo 575 is much better receiver than the Yamaha especially in the dolby digital area - the Onkyo is just simply outstanding in sound quality and in features for the money ($440 shipped from Sound City). I haven't had a change to check out the DTS CD or DTS DVD just yet but I'm looking forward to it. The only thing that bothered me with this unit is that it had no Tape Monitor, so I couldn't hook up my EQ. I called Onkyo and they said you cannot hook up an EQ with this unit. HOWEVER, I didn't give up. After reviewing my instruction booklet for my EQ, I connected the EQ Main Audio Out jacks to the Onkyo 575 Tape rec and play jacks. I then connected my CD audio output jacks to the EQ Main Video IN jacks (you can use the EQ Main Video IN jacks to connect the audio of a VCR or any high-output device, such as another tape deck or CD player). I now have EQ capability with this unit and WOW does it sound nice!!! |

Well, here we go again. You can track my receiver woes by checking out my reveiws on the TX-DS555 and the Sony STR de-835. To make a long story short, i bought the 555 about a month ago, loved it for three weeks but saw more and more DTS discs popping up in my rental store. Got ancy and wanted DTS so after researching and reading reveiws on the Sony 835 i took the 555 back and picked up the sony. Not a whole lot of difference in music but movies were no where near as nice on th Sony. I decided to give the Sony a chance to grow on me though before bringing it back, it is amazing the packed that many features into a $350 unit. Three days after getting it , i realized how they did it. I popped my first DTS rental in ( Dante's Peak ) . The 835 couldnt even play the digital experience intro. Protector kept sowing up on the screen, it also happened a few times during the movie. The Amp in the 835 is pure garbage. If you arent getting ES dont bother with sony, it is JUNK. Today i returned the 835 and was able to pick up the Onkyo 575 for $490+Tax. I have it hooked up and am so very satisfied. The sound is just amazing. The high current 70 watts is like twice a powerful as the BS 100 watt sony. The DTS disc played flawlessly. Only drawback is , i had to get it from Circut City (which i hate to buy from) but i wont go mail order on a receiver. The 575 even at the retail price of $550 is still a bargain. Setup is a breeze, the construction of it is really impressive. The unit is very bulky and well made. Finally i am staisfied. I loved the 555 as well but needed DTS, if you dont care about DTS go with the 555 you can get it for around $300 as a demo but i think it is worth the extra money to have DTS and a new unit. This thing abosolutely blow the ELITE and Sony and even Yamaha away. DONT LOOK ANY FURTHER. for $500 you cant go wrong. 5 stars all the way! |
