Strength:

Everything mentioned in my first review

Weakness:

'POP' sound , clicking sound between tracks in digital mode

In the 3 months I used the Marantz SR-7200 I have had 2 units. I have returned them both for the same reason and the last one I have replaced with the Denon AVR-3802 (which is for me in Belgium about $ 580 (US) more expensive than the SR-7200.

The defects became more clear after 1 month of 'intensive' use.

You can hear a 'POP' in the following cases :
- if you turn the volumebutton to -75dB
- through digital input (coax or optical) at every track change (DD, DTS or PCM mode) with DVD and CD player.
- at power-up from stand-by mode you could sometimes have a load and clear 'POP'.

Marantz let me know that this could be something with the muting circuit in the SR-7200 (and I guess in the complete SR-X200 line).

The reason I returned it is because the first unit was made in China and the second one in Korea ; so this was not a fabrication error but a design fault to my opinion and I have no confidnece towards the future.

I have to say that I'm a very critical listener and it's possible that a lot of people will never hear this.

Now I will wait and test my Denon for a period of more than 1 month and then I will place my Denon review for those who are interested. On thing I can say for the Denon and that is that the bass delivery is just great (I never had a such a clear bass with my Denon)

Strength:

Great tight, articulate, punchy sound. Brilliant with speech and vocals.

Weakness:

None that I can hear

I have listened to the Marantz and Denon runnign through B&W 603S3 fronts, 602S3 rears LCR60 front. Denons DVD2800 DVD player and a louwe Vitros Television.

Listening to Denon was very impressive, very rich, smooth and lush sound. Plent of bass weight and rumble. This is fine but consider how big your room is and if you can really utilise the 7 channel stereo Denon offers. I cant as my room is too small.

However, being almost sold on the Denon I hook up the marantz for a laugh. This totally swayed me. A different kettle of fish. The Marantz although not as weighty as the Denon is much more atmospheric, crisp and upfront. This seemed to suite the smooth B&W setup very well. DVDs such as the eagles show up the difference in sound between the Denon and Marantz. The vocals on "Hotel California" are seamless, and extremely expressive. However on the Denon the sound was somehow muted and softened. It didnt have the same involvement.

I am still making my mind up at the moment, but I will probably plump for the Marantz.

DTS ES-Discrete 6.1-channel decoding !!!

Hello,

Here some information coming from the Marantz webpage...

http://www.marantz.com/hifi/america/news/press_releases/sr_series.html

Marantz gives the information that their new line (SR-5200 to SR-7200) is foreseen with DTS-ES Discrete !!!

MARANTZ SHOWCASES NEW HOME THEATER RECEIVERS WITH UPGRADED PERFORMANCE AND FEATURES AT CEDIA 2001

ITASCA, IL, September 7, 2001 — At CEDIA 2001, Marantz America today is showcasing four new high-performance home theater receivers in the mid price segment that offer significantly upgraded features and technologies to accommodate a broad range of home entertainment system requirements. The SR7200, SR6200, SR5200 and SR4200 combine renowned Marantz sound quality with exceptional installation flexibility and ease of use, and include a host of enhancements such as DTS-ES-compatible 6.1-channel surround sound decoding (all models except the SR4200), 24-bit D/A conversion, Dolby Pro Logic II decoding and many additional advanced features.

The new Marantz receivers were designed with significant input from customers, dealers and custom installation specialists, to provide the features and flexibility that best satisfy the requirements of today?s high-performance home entertainment systems, including 6.1-channel installations. The quality of digital video and audio source components has improved dramatically, and the new receivers are designed to complement their capabilities with better performance and versatility than ever before. Here are some of the highlights of the new Marantz receivers which all are available now.

THE SR7200: HIGH-END 6.1-CHANNEL SURROUND SOUND PERFORMANCE

The Marantz SR7200 Digital Surround Receiver is designed for exceptional high-end home theater receiver performance, incorporating DTS ES-Discrete 6.1-channel decoding for enhanced surround sound realism. The additional back surround channel decoded from DTS-6.1-encoded discs provides a more realistic surround sound environment by allowing smoother 360-degree sound effects with more precise localization behind and beside the viewer. The Marantz SR7200 also offers a selection of 6.1-channel DSP surround modes, including a 6.1-Channel Stereo mode that provides 6.1-channel surround sound from stereo audio sources, as well as Dolby Pro Logic II (Music and Movie) decoding, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 decoding and additional surround modes. The SR7200?s advanced DSP circuitry utilizes 24-bit, 192kHz audio decoding and a leading edge Crystal® DSP chip for superlative fidelity and resolution.

The SR7200 delivers a powerful 105 watts (into 8 ohms) of discrete high-current amplification into all six of its main channels, eliminating the need for an external amplifier to drive the rear surround channel in a 6.1-channel loudspeaker system. The SR7200 features heavy-duty banana-plug-compatible speaker terminals for all six main channels, facilitating the use of high-quality speaker cables.

The Marantz SR7200 offers an expanded complement of video and audio inputs, outputs and switching facilities to accommodate the most sophisticated home entertainment systems, including two component video inputs, four S-video and composite video inputs, front panel A/V inputs, four analog and five digital audio inputs, plus multiple audio and video outputs.

The SR7200 offers a host of additional performance and convenience features, such as a precision AM/FM tuner with 30-station preset tuning, 6.1-channel inputs and preamp outputs to accommodate a multichannel SACD player or external digital decoder, independent control of a second-room audio and video system, DC trigger and TV Auto On/Off inputs, a headphone output and much more. The SR7200 is supplied with a programmable, learning remote control that operates all functions in conjunction with the receiver?s multi-language on-screen menu.

The SR7200 is built to extremely high standards, with a metal alloy faceplate, premium internal components and many additional refinements. In common with all new Marantz receivers, the SR7200 is elegantly styled to complement the most sophisticated home theater systems and living environments.

THE SR6200 AND SR5200: OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AND FLEXIBILITY

The Marantz SR6200 and SR5200 digital surround receivers are high-performance, high-power home theater receivers that offer outstanding home theater surround sound quality and operational flexibility. Both models are similar in specification, and feature DTS-ES Discrete 6.1-channel decoding, 24-bit/96kHz audio D/A conversion, Dolby Pro Logic II plus Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel decoding for exceptional surround sound versatility. The SR6200 delivers 105 watts (into 8 ohms) into each of its six main channels, while the SR5200 provides 85 watts x 6 (into 8 ohms). The SR6200 and SR5200 offer an extensive array of digital and analog audio and video connections to accommodate a wide variety of multiple program sources. Other versatile features common to both models include 6.1-channel inputs and preamp outputs, an AM/FM tuner with 30-station preset tuning, a multi-language on-screen display, a sleep timer function, front panel A/V inputs and more. The SR6200 and SR5200 are built to the same high standards as the SR7200, with refinements such as metal alloy faceplates, internal components selected for maximum sonic purity and heavy-duty speaker terminals for all six main channels.

THE SR4200: AN OUTSTANDING HOME THEATER RECEIVER VALUE

The Marantz SR4200 offers an outstanding combination of home theater receiver performance, features and flexibility—along with legendary Marantz sound quality. It?s ideal for a wide variety of high-performance 5.1-channel home theater systems, thanks to its Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS decoding, 24-bit/96kHz audio D/A conversion, and wide variety of analog and digital video and audio inputs, outputs and switching facilities including S-video switching. The SR4200 delivers a generous 70 watts (into 8 ohms) of power into each of its five main channels, and includes a full selection of performance and convenience features such as an easy to use on-screen menu, AM/FM tuner with 30-station preset memory and full remote control operation. The SR4200 also includes 5.1-channel preamp outputs, providing a ready upgrade path to a more powerful home theater system using external amplifiers.

Perfect for anyone who wants a good 2ch amp and a a/v receiver in one pack!!!!! Sony was a very powerfull amp but with many flaws....heat,dead sound e.t.c. this is my opinion, i hope it helps

UNFORGIVABLY NON-EXISTANT QUALITY CONTROL
NOT TRULY 100X6!!!

This was my THIRD 7200!!!! I was one of the first people to buy this receiver last year, and I had two defective units in a row. Both had defective video cards. I was getting flashing and loss of vertical picture control every time there was a change from a dark to a light scene, on any of the s-video inputs. I loved the Marantz for music, but it was not as punchy as the Denons and Onkyos for music (the 7200 felt like it was putting out about 25 watts to all six channels), plus having to bad units in a row in a SUPPOSED high end receiver was too much for me. A few weeks ago I hear from Marantz that there had indeed been a video card problem, and all the early units had been recalled. It was suggested the units I had aslo had bad power supplies, adn that's why they seem underpowered. I was happy!!! So, back I went to Cambridge Soundworks a few days ago, and now I have a unit with a bad video card AND that fuc*ing popping noise. HEED THE POSTS on this site, especially the people that are already finding reconditioned units, and all the people with the popping sounds and the bad video cards. My unit also had defective six channel inputs, which I found out when I hooked up my SACD player. STAY CLEAR OF THIS UNIT!!!

Strength:

Great Sound, Very Rich, Ample Power

Weakness:

The manual is almost non-existant. Very poorly written.
The smart remote is complex and without a good manual is very difficult to program.

I am amazed at the clarity and channel seperation. It is very powerful but not boomy. It does not have the multiple tier adjustments that the Sony has but so far I haven't needed them. Most of the features are found by trial and error. As previously stated the manual is written by an audio technician for audio technicians. Not for amatures like myself. It assumes that you know all of the audio terminology and what their effects are.

I wish that Marantz would include a CD that would help explain all of the settings and their purpose. It could be interactive.

I love the sound.

Played through Polk Audio RM7500 speakers with a powered subwoofer.

Strength:

Strong build, excellent sound in both music and HT

Weakness:

Loud mute circuitry

I've had this receiver for over a month and I have exchanged it 3 times. First, I had a unit with the s-video problem and the Audioshop exchanged it without problems and said that Marantz knew about it and the second shipment wouldn't have this issue. Then the second unit seem to have a "pop' sound after each song in my CDs + when changing fields (TV - DVD - CD) the pop was as loud as the movie or music I would be playing, the I brought it to the Audioshop where we hooked up the receiver and using a new CD (DDD) the POP would go away, then we tried the new receiver and it also had the same POP. This would only happen when using a digital connection and a ((ADD) type CD) when the input was analog the "POP" would not be there. That's when the 3 guys looking at this unit said that it must be the mute circuit kicking in between tracks so there would not be a hiss in the analog recordings ( I hope to contact Marantz and find out if this is the case). And I tend to believe this theory but I think it could have been done better, less audible to the listener.

Aside from these issues which I blame on myself for not waiting until all the reviews were out for this unit I love it, the music is fantastic and the movies are really well reproduced the receiver is build strong and with quality. I would still recommend this unit to anyone but it must be research and listened before taking any decision.

Build qaulity of this product is second to none.
Match this with the three year warranty and you are pretty
safe. This unit always has enough power for movies and
stereo. OSD is an extremely nice feature. Sound is excellent
on this unit in both stereo and HT. I had a unit with the
s video problem but it was fixed in one day and is perfect.
Highly recommend.

Strength:

quiet sound,good build,A/D button(only in fascia)

Weakness:

dead zone in the first 40 dbs-why on earth?/remote
slight digital character in some instruments in stereo mode

I recently decided to upgrade my amplifier(a very good MARANTZ PM66SE) because I felt that my (recently upgraded)speakers(a pair of AVANCE sig.3-stellar stuff!) could use higher currents and watts than the 50w marantz could offer.
Initially I wanted to purchase ARCAM’s newA85 DIVA,but friends and salespeople alike half convinced me that bying a strictly stereo amp was a waste of money,in these home cinema days.Having in mind the possibility of surround sound,I READ tests in international and local hi-fi mags and decided eventually on Marantz sr6200 (2x110w)receiver,without a listening test(as it is so usual in Greek hi-fi shops-only
In true hi-end you stand a chance of serious comparative tests).
Initial impressions weren’t all that good though:despite having good channel separation and adequate”air” between different instruments, one could note a digital character in piano notes and a “splashing”quality in cymbals.Female voices in good recordings were very lifelike though,so I had to compare my 2 amps side by side to
See if I should keep my new purchase.A friend(home cinema buff) was also disappointed by his 6200(in a 6 channel setting, and in stereo mode) ,so I had to decide fast,as I didn’t want to be stuck with a lemon.
Not having an A/B switch,I had to change my speaker cables(fortunately fitted with banana plugs)and analogue interconnect back and forth, using CHESKY’s demonstration disc. After a whole afternoon of straining my ears I am not sure of what to do next-here are my conclusions:
The $700 sr6200 is a very quiet receiver but despite its 110 watt RMS nominal power you have to work it at the last 1/3 of power(around –20db is a realistic background level-it starts from –75db-the first 40 dbs could not move my speakers.)
In contrast the $300 pm 66 produced the same levels(verified with a decibellometer)with the knob at 10 o’clock! It also sounded more realistic in piano notes as the receiver had a more artificial character-but this difference was not noted in other insruments( bass/quitar,drums).Background cymbals may had a bit more sparkle through the stereo only amp,but the 6200 demonstrated a slightly wider soundstage and “air”.Vocals were well separated by both, even in complex pieces like
REM’s “e-bow the letter”where patti smith’s soaring voice is intricately interplayed
With Stipe’s mesmerizing vocals.Overall,I would say that the differences are smaller
than I initially feared, but the pm 66 was less tiresome in the long run.I only wish
It had higher current and wattage-but then I am not so bent to return the receiver.
In case of an exchange,I am thinking of getting NAD’s 370 stereo only amp(120 quality watts per ch)and using the difference(around$130)toward a cheaper a/v receiver that will play only movies.
I welcome suggestions from other music and high fidelity fans who have traveled down the same path.
