Strength:

clean, natural sound for both stereo listening & ht

Weakness:

video signal problems, fire

overall, a great sounding receiver at this price point. however, marantz has many quality issues to sort out. i orignally purchased 2 units, one for myself, one for my father. i finally decided to move up to ht setup from my old trustworthy (and still kicks but) denon dra825 stereo amp. i auditioned my marantz for about 2 weeks. i found that although the bass wasn't as pronounced as the denon, the marantz did a great job at both stereo listening and ht - very accurate and clean sounding and excellent decodeing. however, i noticed that the video signal (from both digital cable box and dvd using either s-video or composite) loses vertical hold after bright flashes. decided to pick up the denon avr3802 for an audition. both pieces have there strengths and weaknesses, wound up keeping the denon - seemed to be a better match to my klipsch epics/room setup (big factor).

my dad's: spent last saturday helping him with setup. sound was excellent. my dad was bragging about it all week. until tonight, when after listining (at low levels) for about 10 minutes it went up in smoke. not good. after reading about numerous complaints about poping noises, leads me to believe that the power supply is of poor quality. in summary, this is a great receiver with (unfortunately) some serious quality issues. hopefully, marantz will sort this out. fortunately the people at hi-fi house in wilmington have been extremely helpful in my situation.

SMOOTH, SMOOTH, SMOOTH, SMOOTH, AND SNOOZE ZZZZZZZZZZZ.
THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THIS PIECE. IT REALLY DOES SOUND WARM AND FUZZY. UNFORTUNATELY THE HIGH FREQUENCIES ARE ALSO MASKED AND THERE IS NO DETAIL UP TOP AT ALL.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY A DENON AVR3802 MADE IN JAPAN!!!!!! SOUNDS MUCH BETTER. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT MARANTZ PUTS OUT SOME GREAT PRODUCTS BUT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

This review is for SR5200.
I'm using it with my Energy Encore speakers.I was kind of skeptical about it because of the mixed opinions. The receiver took little time to break-in. But now I have started getting that crisp clarity of sound with open sound stage with all the detail in it. It's amazing!!

I want to pass the LFE over main L&R channel instead of the Sub. Does anybody know how to set the subwoofer 'OFF' on 'Source Direct' mode? I tried it, but I couldn't do it through OSD menu. I could do that with 'Auto' mode( i.e. 'Source Direct' off).

I bought it from SanFransisco Stereo at Berkeley. Steve is very co-operative.

Pros:
1. Crisp, clean, pure sound at all volume levels without hiss or distortion
2. DPL II is very good
Cons:
1. Modes other that 'Source Direct' sound underpowered.
2. DPL II mode does not have settings (like in Denons)
3. Sometimes female 'S' sounds pronounced (like a whistle). This may be because of a poor source material.( I found it while watching TV)
4. Manual sucks!!

I give it 5 for value and 4 overall.

Strength:

Weakness:

This is a review for the SR-6200.

I don't know about the 7200, but I've had the 6200 for almost three months now and have had no "popping sounds" that others talk about.

The bottom line for the SR-6200 is that the sound is pure (i.e. not a Sony). I am very happy with this receiver and recommend it to anyone looking for a middle-end receiver for under a $1000. The only problem is that I live in an apartment and I'm unable to realize the 6200's full power.

My setup is as follows:

Receiver - Marantz SR-6200
Front Speakers - Acoustic Research S50's
Rear Speakers - Infinity SL40's
Center Speaker - JBL Studio

Weakness:

Numerous design defects made it unusable (see below)

I purchased a Marantz SR7200 with a set of Energy Encore speakers at my local B&M retailer. I had gone in looking to buy a mid-range Denon receiver, but the store didn't carry Denon. The salesperson sold me on the Marantz sound and said that for my needs (I also want to have the option to drive a second set of speakers in another room), I should get the SR7200. I hadn't done much research on the Marantz line, so I hadn't expected the problems I wound up having. Too bad I didn't check here first!

Out of the box, I had the three problems most people seem to be having with SR7200 units: popping between CD tracks (when using optical digital input) or pausing a DVD (using digital coaxial audio input); brief loss of vertical hold after bright flashes on the S-Video output of my DVD player (switched through the receiver; and significant pauses before the receiver detects a digital signal, leading to loss of the start of audio tracks.

I returned the unit to the dealer and swapped it for another one, which had the exact same problems. When I returned the second unit, the manager told me they had been having problems with the SR7200 -- they had about 5% of their units returned with defects. I decided to upgrade (for an additional charge) to the SR8200 which, so far, has exhibited no defects and seems like a much better unit overall.

I returned the unit after having the same troubles like most of you seem to have : popping noises between tracks, louder pops when power-up the system, defect video switching, ...

Now I'm using my previous dolby surround sysytem since I'm not that much at home...

I will wait to see if the SR-8200 is coming to Europe. It seems to be a better unit...

Weakness:

popping noises!

this is a repost from an earlier review. my first review was rather hasty since i posted it 2 days after purchasing it. i was very excited about this model then, but i should of waited until i had thoroughly tested it. yes, i have the vaunted popping noises as well. i went thru 2 units. the first had a bad s-video connection and the popping noises. the second one had just the popping noises. it's a shame because i really wanted to keep this receiver because of the sound quality. i talked to a cambridge soundworks rep who said they had recalled the first batch. the store was literally without new marantz ht receivers for a month. the two units i tried were from a new batch so marantz still has a problem on their hands, with the 7200 anyways. i would advise very strongly to buy from a reputable dealer with a liberal return policy if you want to roll the dice with this model!!

Sound,sound,sound! Overall quality

This is for the similar sr6200. There have been some complains about the "pop" between songs when in digital mode. Sometimes its there and I hope it can be fixed. Else, the Marantz is exellent. Sound in every mode A/D, movie or source direct is exellent, crystal clear. And it plays loud if you just turn the knob towards the top. Manual is easy and straight forward. Easy understanding set-up drawings.
Together with my DV6200 life is good!!!

Pro Logic II Music and Movie
Build Quality and Looks

Weakness:

Amplification of Noise
Amplifier Power
Manual
Pop Sounds changing cable channels in Pro Logic II Movie
Switching clicks between modes
Operation difficulty...especially remote and manual

I wanted to like this reciever, given my past success with AV 600 preamp. However, the 7200 fell short. See above weaknesses, the hardest to overcome was the amplifiers inability to produce strong sound without unwanted noise. At really low levels this unit sounds nice in DD, PLII Music and Movie, but it makes sense to me, that a quality product will sound great at any level.

The remote is powerful if you have the time and patience to overcome the learning curve. IMO, there is no time to be challenged by a remote for more then a few minutes, it should be more intuitive.

The manual was poorly designed, and poorly written. NO FUN at all.

Great chassis though....nice looking equipment. However, since I keep my components out of view, and the quality of sound reproduction combined with ease of use are my prerequisites for a a/v reciever, this was hardly a factor.

Bottom line, I don't like this reciever, but I'm not counting Marantz out because of one sub par model. I returned the unit for an Onkyo 797, which is clearly a superior product, in every possible aspect.
