Weakness:

manufacture, picture quality and customer service

As my first major audio/video purchase, Phillips Magnavox was NOT the way to go. This television, merely 3 years old has died. I too, have experienced faint vertical lines over the years but never to an extent great enough to bother me. In October however, just 3 years after I purchased the t.v. new, it died. I was watching a program when it suddenly shut itself off. I thought it must have been a power shortage and simply walked away from the problem. When I used the television the next day however, it did the same thing. Now, three months later, the television will not even come on at all and if for some chance it does, it will shut itself off within 30 minutes. Furious, I looked up the Philips website and took the television to their recommended service technician who then informed me that the t.v. has a malfunctioning microchip and that "sorry, but philips no longer supplies this part." I then called the customer service number and the foreign lady, Vanisha? was rude, insincere and did I mention RUDE??? She offered me no sympathy and instead informed me that my only option was to ship it to the philips factory store that would charge me $225 just to look at the set. I told her that that price was rediculous and she replied by saying that she was sorry I felt that way and hung up on me. I will never purchase a Philips product again.

Weakness:

An odious jail bar pattern of grey stripes appears across any dark scenes.

I bought this set about two years ago. When I got decent video sources with nice black levels, I saw the heinous stripes. As you've already guessed, Philips wouldn't take any responsibilty. I found that there was a class action lawsuit filed against Philips. "The complaint alleges that certain Philips television sets, Models TP2784C and TP3284C, are defective and that Philips has engaged in deceptive advertising with regard to these products." I contacted the firm representing the consumers and they told me that "The case has tentively been settled. You are a member of the class if you purchased one of these sets and you should be receiving notice of settlement within the next three to five months." Here's hoping.

Strength:

Great price(I got the 35c), service came ASAP. Doesn''t look too cheap, compared to other similiar proced tv''s.

Weakness:

Strange bending on sides of screen. I thought it was my WebTV, or other electrical component making this occur, but it the screen. Very front heavy.

I got a great price on this set. It was in the clearence isle for months, open, but still wrapped up. Then it had a 20% off sign, and I snapped it up. I did have a repair a few weeks after purchasing, as a friend noticed that the screen was not pefectly center. The black lines on the sides were about 1-2 millimeters larger on one side. Magnavox came out and adjusted it under warrenty, but there is a tiny mark on top where the front and back come together, as a result of opening the unit, and adjucting the tube. NO biggie. I then looked at Circuit City, Best Buy, Target, etc, and most models have off center screens.

Strength:

Small footprint, digital comb filter, 800 lines resolution, good color and detail

Weakness:

Light colored vertical lines on left side of screen on all auxillary inputs; cured in new model (3285C)

Unfortunately, I didn't check out this model on this site before purchasing. It was plagued by the same problems as the other reviews indicate. HOWEVER, Philips had an in home repairman come; he ordered a part for it to cure the light bar vertical lines. IN THE MEAN TIME, I was back at Best Buy where I purchased the set and saw that the model was now the "3285C." I called Philips and they confirmed that the model 3284 had been replaced with this improved model, which has a comb filter of their own design and manufacture. So... I loaded up the 3284 and exchanged it for a 3285. The newer model does not suffer from the vertical line problems, and has a very good picture in every other respect. When the Philips authorized repairman came out with the part, I explained what had happened and he calibrated this set for free.
Don't buy a 3284 under any circumstances, but I can completely recommend the 3285. While all of this was very inconvenient, I must give Philips and their service centers full credit for doing everything they could to resolve a bad design (Best Buy was great about it too). I will continue to be loyal to Philips.

Strength:

good feature for the price

Weakness:

Very bad picture quality

I have been really disapointed by this set (Philips Magnavox TP3284C)

I bought the set form Circuit City, and notice that when the screen was dark (during dark scenes) the left side of the screen displayed vertical bands lighter and darker.

It was especially noticed when displaying a DVD, via the S-Video Input, or a tape via the Video-2 input.

The set has been exchanged for the same model, and again it showed the very same problem.

I've ended up exchanging the set again, and picked up a JVC 32020, that is far better.

Note that the Circuit City store has been very fair during this all process.

Strength:

good pic, low price

Weakness:

those darn lines

This TV is the worst investment I ever made. I bought the TV becaue it had the lowest price in it's class and figured the Philips and I could help "Make things better". The lines suck, they always appear in really dark, or really light screens. I bought the TV from BJ's and they have a sign that syas the problem must be fixed through the manufacturer, and through the manufacturer's warranty.

I have not yet called philips to get the set serviced but after reading all the other reviews with failed servicings I am less than optimistic. Hopefully I'll be able to return it.

DO NOT BUY THIS TV IT IS THE WORST PURCHASE EVER MADE!

Weakness:

picture on video inputs, philips customer support

What a nightmare this set has been! After a few weeks of using it I noticed faint vertical lines starting from the left of the screen and ending around the middle(this only occured when using the video inputs). I called Philips and they instructed me to bring it to a local service center. The service center said they were told by philips that there was a manufacturing defect with this set. The power coming into the set somehow was intefering with the video inputs. Philips sent them a shield kit to install. I got the tv back and it still had the same problem. I then went to a local electronics dealer and saw the same set being sold and I noticed that it also had the same problem. I called Philips and was told to send the set back to service. They refused to acknowledge any manufacturing defect. I ended up returning it and thankfully got my money back. BEWARE OF THIS TELEVISION!
