Strength:

Casing style, price

Weakness:

reliability is questionable to say the least

I too noticed the vertical lines mentioned in the 2 other reviews. Adjustments can be made to reduce them, but image is really too dark if they are made to go away entirely.

My biggest problem with this TV is that it has just died. We bought the thing late December or early January and tonight the picture went away. Was watching a video tape, the picture kind of turned yellowish and shrank to fill perhaps 50% of the screen area and then went away completely. Thinking it was the video source, I tried other sources, S-video in from DVD, direct cable-in, VCR again, even direct from antenna using rabbit ears. Its not the source.

Tried playing with the remote for a while, switching between the video sources with the AV button, never any change.

Then, all of a sudden, a ffffzzzzz sound---something has literally burned out inside the set! I went to take a closer look and there is definite smoke coming out of the set. Yep, bad stuff. I unplugged the set quickly to avoid further fire hazards.

Now, this TV is 4 months old. My old TV, the 4-year old Sharp, is still going strong. My *really* old, high-school TV, the 13" Magnavox, is *also* still going strong in the bedroom. How truly disappointing to have this 32" TV, whose picture quality is far superior in size and quality to those old TV's, just basically explode inside itself after 4 months of life. Will attempt to replace or return for something else at Circuit City tomorrow.

I give this 1 star for value and overall rating---JUST because it is now dead after a short life. Value would be 3 if it had lived---it seems right in line with other TV's of its class, overall rating would also be 3 if it were living, for same reason.

Strength:

good picture using cable connection

Weakness:

TERRIBLE picture using AV inputs

I bought this set after a recommendation from CONSUMER REPORTS on a similar model...WHAT A MISTAKE!!! Using the AV inputs, there are the same vertical lines that everyone else is having problems with...Philips sent a repairman 3 TIMES to attempt to fix the set but the lines are still there, although not quite as bad...my problem now is dealing with Philips...they asked me to send a copy of my receipt over a month ago, so i ASSUMED they were going to be honorable about it and refund my money...but NOW they are giving me a simply pathetic runaround and have said "they have no record of my set even being serviced"...I bought the set at Best Buy, and am going to attempt to trade it in on something else....I hope Philips burns in hell for this pitiful model and even worse, their treatment of their customers

This model is defective! No component VDO

I noticed vertical faint lines running from left to center of the screen, when using AV1/2. Philips tried its best to fix it, but could not. They bought my set back, I've got JVC D-series... CAN"T BE HAPPIER!!!

Strength:

Remote with many features. Color control: Movies, Sports, Multimedia, etc.

Weakness:

Everything. Picture Quality, Reliability Questionable.

I purchased this TV from Circuit City on February 28th, 2000. On the first set I had, I noticed the vertical white bars across the screen. I assumed there was something wrong with it, so I took it back and swapped it out for another one. Again this set had the exact same problem! I called the Service Center (I got a 3-year in-home warranty) with the problem. The guy came down and after 2 hours finally narrowed the problem down. He had to order a steel plate to put between the circuits inside. The white lines, as he said, were due to a voltage problem within the shadow mask. After waiting a week, He fixed the problem. Afterwards, when I would play a game on it (Playstation, Dreamcast) It would have thick, black bars (a little over an inch 1/2 wide on each side) on the sides. The tech fixed this. THEN after this was "fixed" I noticed a horizontal flickering in the background of dark pictures of both games and movies. I couldn't stand playing it any more than 2 hours at a time. Anyway, after going through 4 of these TV's and a 32" RCA (Which also had the black bars along the sides) I finally gave up on Phillips and purchased an AWESOME JVC AV32D501 TV. This has been the BEST television that I have ever had. I will never purchase another Phillips Magnavox product again.

Strength:

Remote easy to use; cable connection ok picture

Weakness:

Bad picture using a/v inputs; customer service gives the run-around

Although I read the reviews on this product here, I decided to purchase this television at wal-mart thinking it wouldn't happen to me. Boy, was I totally wrong. I connected my dvd player via s-video that same day and the first thing I noticed were those damn horizontal lines on the screen. If it weren't for the lines, the picture would be great. I tried switching to multi media mode on the remote and the lines seemed to disappear because the screen darkened but they reappear during light sequences in a movie. The lines appear only when using a/v input selection. Philips Magnavox said to return it or they would attempt to correct it but when I mentioned that reviewers here never got the problem fixed...the representative had no answer. I was fortunate to get my money back at wal-mart after speaking to the manager. Avoid this set!!!! Listen to the reviews...this set is a DEFECT!!!!!

Manufacturer, display problems

Well I started dealing with my repair center today, they are really good and I have 100% faith in them. The 1-2 week wait for the parts doesnt make me happy.

I did call Philips today also asking why they told me there were no problems with this TV when they have a service kit for the repair shops!! Hows that add up?

I will never, ever, buy any Philips product for the way I was treated today. Basically the service center lied to my face and then hung up on me. The woman was very very rude; she must have had a bad day. I am one of those people that can argue for hours with out raising my voice or stepping out of line. THEY ARE THE WORST CUSTOMERSERVICE COMPANY I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. She put me on hold for 20 minutes; I had referenced this site many times in our conversation so I assumed she was going off to look at AudioReview. But no, she came back and was very belligerent, maybe she was mad because she looked at this site and saw the reviews! :)

This is the best site for reviews I have ever been to, keep up the good work. And if you want drop a line to Philips and tell them they suck and so does their products.

Strength:

Weakness:

customer service - speaker quality

This has been the absolute worst electronics product I
have ever bought in my life. Bought at Circuit City and
was assured they have few defect reports on this TV.
Four months after purchase the speakers were so distorted
and sound quality so poor - they have to be completely
replaced - at my expense for the labor.
The real complaint - Phillips Magnavox so called customer service. They refused to let anyone other than a telerep speak to me about it - who recited the after 90 days speech to me - over and over.
Circuit City was also too busy pointing their finger at
Phillips to be of any real help.

Verdict- stay away from Philips Magnavox.
